We did see a few showers move through northern California this
evening, but we're not expecting any more showers tonight. Only a
few changes to the cloud cover in this update as clouds are being
generated off the Cascades. In addition, a fair amount of upper
level cirrus clouds are moving into southern Oregon this evening.

.SHORT TERM.../Issued at 239 PM PDT Thursday 25 2019/
Visible satellite imagery is showing some cumulus developing in
NE California and southern Lake County this afternoon. Models show
instability in this region, but short-term CAMs (including the
HRRR) show little chance for these to grow into anything
significant. This is likely due to a lack of deep moisture and
also a lack of significant forcing. Still, there could be isolated
showers from near the Medicine Lake region east- northeastward
over portions of the Modoc, including the Warner Mountains, and
into southern Lake County through this evening.
A dry upper trough offshore will move eastward into the area
tonight, then east of the Cascades Friday morning. There's very
little moisture associated with this trough, so we're not
expecting any precipitation, but it will cool things down a bit
for inland areas Friday. Most locations will be about 6-10
degrees lower with afternoon north to northwesterly breezes that
will last into the evening. However, as thermal low pressure
develops in northern California with high pressure offshore, the
low-level flow will turn northeasterly and funnel down the
Chetco, so it will actually be warmer near Brookings than it has
been the last couple of days.
We'll remain in a northwest flow aloft to begin this weekend, so
dry weather will continue. Another dry upper trough will skirt by
to our north and east Saturday. While slight cooling is possible,
there'll be little noticeable change in daytime temperatures.
Temperatures are expected to dip into the upper 30s in the valleys
west of the Cascades Saturday night with some of the typically
colder locations a few degrees lower. So, there could be patchy
frost in outlying areas outside of Medford/Grants Pass/Roseburg
early Sunday morning.
Cooler air aloft will move in east of the Cascades Sunday, where
it'll probably be a few degrees cooler (compared to Saturday).
Areas west of the Cascades will remain seasonable with perhaps a
minor bump upward in temperatures. But, with strengthening low-
level offshore (northeasterly) flow again, expect a more
pronounced Chetco effect resulting in highs in the upper 70s to
near 80 degrees at Brookings.

A long wave trough will remain in place over the Pacific Northwest
through the extended period. This will support relatively mild
temperatures over the area. Day to day variability will be
orchestrated by short waves circulating through the trough.
Monday will be the warmest day of the stretch inland with high
temperatures at or just above seasonal norms along with dry
weather.
A strong short wave will move down from the north Tuesday. This
will bring some showers with it, especially over the east side,
where the timing of the maximum dynamics aloft will be such that
it will have some surface heating to work with. However, the short
wave will move out to the east by the time maximum surface
heating comes around, so the resulting convection will likely be
showers rather than thunderstorms, and the air mass will become
more stable in the afternoon in the wake of the trough. Inland
high temperatures will be 5-10 degrees cooler than the Monday
highs.
There won't be much in the way of triggers Wednesday, and heights
bounce back up a bit. So it will be dry and inland temperatures will
warm a bit near normal values.
Another much weaker short wave will move in Thursday afternoon or
Thursday night. It will move in too late to have much of an effect
Thursday, so that day will likely be similar to Wednesday. A shower
or two make initiate Thursday night as the wave moves through.

.AVIATION...For the 26/0Z TAFS...The latest satellite image shows a
sliver of stratus along the coast north of Cape Blanco, including
North Bend with IFR ceilings. There's a chance this may only be
temporary, but the latest guidance shows it could continue into
early Friday morning. So we introduced it in the North Bend TAF
until 16z, but it conditions could improve an hour or two earlier.
Once they do, then VFR conditions are expected the rest of the TAF
period with gusty north winds late Friday morning into Friday
evening.
Elsewhere...VFR ceilings will continue through the TAF period with
gusty winds possible in the afternoon and early evening hours. Could
not rule out isolated IFR cigs in the Coquille and Umpqua late

.MARINE...Updated 830 PM PDT Thursday, 25 April 2019...Steep
seas and small craft advisory strength winds will linger through
early Friday afternoon over the waters. The highest seas are
expected beyond 5 nm of shore south of Cape Blanco.
The thermal trough will re-strengthen late Friday afternoon through
Sunday and could very well remain strong into Monday. This is
expected to bring another round of strong north winds and very steep
seas. Strongest winds are expected from Cape Blanco south with north
gales possible by late Friday afternoon and continuing into Monday.
Models indicate this second round of gales will peak late Saturday
and again late Sunday and will be stronger than Thursday's event.
Models keep these strong winds going through Monday evening. With
the persistent strong north winds, very steep seas may expand
northward to the waters from Charleston south Saturday evening and
from the waters from Reedsport south by Sunday evening.
Tuesday through Thursday, a trough may arrive from the north
resulting in weakening north winds. However, the trough is most
likely to remain centered to the east and allow northerly winds to
remain gusty and stronger than normal.
Note: Buoys 46027 and 46015 are both out of service. According to
the National Data Buoy Center, 46015 is scheduled to be redeployed
in August. Redeployment of 46027 has not been scheduled. Buoy 46229
is the only operational buoy in the coastal waters between Newport
and Eureka.
