The east coast sea breeze has developed early this afternoon and
is pushing through KMIA, KOPF, and KMIA taf sites. The east coast
sea breeze should continue to push a little bit more west for the
afternoon hours before going back east late this afternoon into
early this evening. Therefore, the taf sites above will be
southeast around 10 knots through 22Z before going back to a
southwest direction. Rest of the taf sites should remain in the
south/southwest direction around 10 knots for the afternoon hours.
There could also be some showers later this afternoon over the
east coast taf sites especially at KPBI, KFXE, and KFLL. The
ceiling and vis will also remain in VFR conditions through this
evening.

..NEAR TO RECORD HIGHS EAST COAST AREAS THIS AFTERNOON...
UPDATE...
High pressure will move further east into the Atlantic waters
today allowing for a weak cold front over Northern Florida to move
southward towards South Florida. This will allow for a
south/southwest steering flow over South Florida keeping the east
coast sea breeze near the east coast with the west coast sea
breeze pushing across the area.
The 12Z morning sounding from MIA does show some low level
moisture in place, but there is also a cap around the 800 mb level
and this cap should remain in place for most of the day. The 500
mb level this morning was also around -6.3C which is very warm
for this time of year, and the short range models are only showing
the 500 mb level to cool down to around -7.5C by this afternoon
which is still below the normal 500 mb temp of -10.6C. Therefore,
it looks like we should only see some showers over the east coast
metro areas this afternoon into early this evening with the best
coverage over the northeast portions of South Florida. There could
be a few thunderstorms over the Atlantic waters late this afternoon
into this evening, due to the gulf stream warm waters and the
front getting close to the region.
The front will continue to move southward this evening and move
through South Florida late tonight bringing an end to the showers
for the east coast metro areas. The Atlantic waters could still
see some showers and a few thunderstorms with the passing of the
weak cold front especially over the Gulf stream waters.
The east coast metro areas should see near or even record highs
this afternoon which could even get close to the monthly record
high for February.

Generally VFR conditions are expected through the period.
South/southeast light winds early this morning will become more
South/Southwest during the day today as a cold front approaches.
The front will eventually push through the area after midnight
tonight and into the early morning hours Monday. A few isolated
are possible this afternoon over the taf sites, but the best
coverage will be over KFLL, KFXE, and KPBI taf sites where VCSH
will be added between 17 and 00Z time periods.

DISCUSSION...
TODAY AND TONIGHT: Today looks to be the last exceptionally warm day
of the week as the ridge that has been overhead last week slips away
to the south and east and allows the system across the southeastern
US to move southwards.
Prevailing winds will veer south-southwesterly today as the ridge
axis slips south of the area. This will limit any inland movement of
the Atlantic seabreeze, and push the Gulf breeze across the state
through the afternoon. Moisture return ahead of the front will be
limited, though more will be available than the past few days. And
ultimately this will be the limiting factor on any convection,
despite near record temps leading to good afternoon instability.
Current forecast calls for activity popping up on the seabreezes
into midday, converging along the east coast in the afternoon and
moving offshore.
The main story will once again be temperatures, with almost all of
the east coast sites expected to approach record highs for the day,
if not for the month of February. See the climate section below for
more information.
Front arrives tonight with little fanfare except to increase showers
over the local waters with a few brushing the coast at times.
MONDAY: The frontal boundary looks to clear the region by daybreak
Monday, stalling across the Florida Straits or so during the day.
The strong surface high building behind it will quickly be building
east into the Atlantic, so little to no cold air advection is
expected as winds veer out of the northeast Monday morning. The
strengthening gradient will bring a breezy day across South Florida,
bordering on windy at times along the east coast. This will bring a
"cooler" and cloudy day, with temps closer to normal in the upper
70s and low 80s.
Deeper moisture will arrive with the boundary, and the wind shift
will mean that it will not quite be able to scour out before the
front stalls just to our south. Instability looks minimal, so fast
moving, low topped showers racing across the region from the
Atlantic through the day looks like the pattern. The gusty winds
keep temperatures mild Monday night in the 60s and low 70s, with
rain chances increasing late night as the front starts to march back
north.
TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY: Despite what look to be some convective
feedback issues with the GFS, it does depict well what other
guidance hints at as we head into midweek: A passing weak midlevel
disturbance will induce the old frontal boundary to lift back across
the region.
With a slow moving boundary, low level winds around 20kts, PWATs
approaching 2 standard deviations above normal (~1.8"-1.9"), the
setup looks good for some periods of moderate to heavy rain across
the region. This looks maximized Tuesday afternoon and evening as
isentropic analysis shows lift will be maximized along the boundary
during this time. The strong easterly flow will add a coastal
convergence component to the heavier rain threat.
As we head into Wednesday, models differ in how far north and how
strong the boundary will remain. Nonetheless, with deeper moisture
lingering, expect another day of scattered to potentially numerous
showers.
REMAINDER OF THE WEEK: While the details for the latter half of the
week remain unclear, models have somewhat settled on the general
trends. Models show several transient vort maxes scooting through in
the prevailing zonal upper level flow, with perhaps a stronger
trough swinging into the eastern US by next weekend. The details are
in the timing/strength of these features, and how they translate to
surface weather. Right now, the suggestion is that the low level
ridge will attempt to build in late week, allowing for a warmer, and
somewhat drier pattern. However, this is still very much in question
at this time. Model consensus keeps rain chances in the forecast
through the period, which looks reasonable at this time.
MARINE...Winds will continue to veer south-southwest today as high
pressure retreats ahead of an approaching frontal boundary. The
front is forecast to move through late tonight, with a strong
northeast wind surge behind it arriving Monday. Current timing shows
onset of hazardous winds near daybreak Monday, which will likely
necessitate a Small Craft Advisory for portions of the Atlantic
later today. At least cautionary conditions are expected over the
offshore Gulf waters.
The front will stall across the Florida Straits into Tuesday, with
the gusty winds continuing into Tuesday. Seas may build to 7-8 ft in
the Atlantic through Tuesday. Winds subside and become south-
southeasterly into Wednesday as the boundary lifts back to the
north.
The approach and stalling front will bring higher rain chances into
at least midweek. Storm chances look minimal, but can't be ruled out
at times.
CLIMATE...Today will be the last day of record, or near record
temperatures across South Florida, though temps may remain a degree
or two above normal through the week.
