Relatively light northeasterly steering flow should allow for the development of Atlantic and Gulf sea breezes this afternoon. Expect convection to initiate along these boundaries and generally progress towards the SSW. Storm coverage should be greatest over the interior and southern portions of S FL this afternoon and progressively increase in coverage over the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts as boundary collisions occur. MVFR conditions are possible with convection today and TEMPOS for CIGS/VIS may be needed for east coast sites later this afternoon. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 342 AM EDT Thu Aug 29 2019/ ..HEAVY RAINFALL POSSIBLE ACROSS SOUTH FLORIDA TODAY INTO FRIDAY... ..MONITORING HURRICANE DORIAN FOR THIS WEEKEND... DISCUSSION... Heavy rainfall is possible today into Friday across South Florida with a trough of low pressure moving through the region from the Atlantic waters. Then the focus turns to Hurricane Dorian as it moves towards the Florida Peninsula this Labor Day Weekend. TODAY THROUGH FRIDAY... High pressure will build into the Florida Peninsula from the Western Atlantic waters north of the area today into Friday, as a low level trough moves west across South Florida from the Western Atlantic waters. This will lead to a light easterly wind flow over South Florida along with PWAT values around 2.1 to 2.3 inches which is around the 90th percentile for this time of year. Therefore, scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will develop along the east and west coast sea breezes each day and push slowly inland with possible heavy rainfall. There is more information in the hydro section below on the heavy rainfall potential over South Florida for today into Friday. There is also an mid to upper level low over the Bahamas that will be moving westward and across South Florida on Friday. This will allow for the 500MB temperatures to cool down to -6 to -7C. Therefore, some of the storms on Friday could become strong with gusty winds and frequent lightning strikes. LABOR DAY WEEKEND... As for the upcoming Labor Day Weekend, the main concern will be continuing to monitor Hurricane Dorian. The National Hurricane Center is continuing to forecast Dorian to move to the northwest late this week before moving west northwest this weekend. This would put this system in the northwestern Bahamas or near the east coast of Florida sometime this weekend. It is still too soon to know about what the details of the potential impacts to South Florida may be. It's important not to focus on the exact details of the forecast track owing to uncertainty in the evolution of this system and the potential for impacts to extend well away from its center. Residents and visitors of South Florida should continue to monitor the forecast as the exact details become clearer in the days going forward. This is also a good reminder to make sure that your hurricane plan and supply kits are in order as we head into the peak of the Hurricane Season. EXTENDED FORECAST... The extended forecast will also depend on the location and strength of Hurricane Dorian. At this time, it looks like South Florida could be in an southerly wind flow keeping the deep tropical moisture in place. Therefore, will keep scattered showers and thunderstorms in place for the middle to end of next week but this can change depending on how the strength and location of Hurricane Dorian. MARINE... The winds will be mainly from the easterly direction today through Friday with speeds of 15 knots or less. There will also be a small northeast swell of 2 feet or less affecting the Atlantic waters of Palm Beach County through Friday. This will allow for the seas to be 2 to 4 feet in the Palm Beach Atlantic waters with rest of the Atlantic waters at 2 to 3 feet. The Gulf waters will also remain at 2 feet or less through Friday. The marine forecast for this Labor Day weekend will all depend on the strength and position of Hurricane Dorian. All boaters need to stay informed with the latest forecast from the National Weather Service on Hurricane Dorian. BEACH FORECAST... The threat of rip currents will continue to increase across the east coast beaches today into the Labor Day weekend, due to the small northeast swells through Friday, increasing onshore flow, along with the approach of Hurricane Dorian for the Labor Day Weekend. There will also be a new moon late this week into early Labor Day Weekend. This will allow for the tide to run about 0.5 to 1 inch above the predicted levels. These levels along with the small northeast swells will lead to some minor coastal flooding along the beaches of South Florida especially along the beaches of Palm Beach County during the high tide cycles. HYDROLOGY... With the ground somewhat saturated from the earlier week of shower and thunderstorms over South Florida and additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches possible across the area today into Friday, there could be some minor street and low lying flooding across the metro areas of South Florida with any showers and thunderstorms that do develop. This hazardous weather outlook is for South Florida. .DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT Rip currents: A northeast long-period swell from Tropical Depression Erin will lead to a High Risk of Rip Currents along the Palm Beaches today. A moderate risk of rip currents is forecast for the Miami- Dade and Broward beaches. Coastal Flooding: Minor coastal flooding will be possible along the east coast beaches at high tide this evening due to the new moon and increased northeast swell. Thunderstorms: Scattered to widespread thunderstorms are expected across South Florida this afternoon, with the greatest coverage over the interior. The primary hazards will be heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and lightning. Waterspouts: Isolated waterspouts are possible across all South Florida waters. Flooding: Heavy rainfall will be possible with showers and thunderstorms today. Slow moving storms may lead to the threat for ponding of water along streets and in low lying areas. This threat will be highest across the urban areas this afternoon. Temperatures: Heat indices will climb into the 105 to 108 degree range this afternoon. Please use caution if working outdoors. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY Scattered to locally numerous storms are expected each day through the remainder of the week across South Florida. The main hazards will be lightning, locally heavy rainfall, and gusty winds. A long-period northeasterly swell moving through the local Atlantic waters will bring an increased rip current risk to the east coast. The New Moon and increased swell will continue to bring elevated tidal levels to the East Coast beaches into this weekend. Minor coastal flooding will be possible at high tides. There is an increased chance for flooding Friday and potentially Saturday due to widespread showers and thunderstorms across the area. Hurricane Dorian may potentially approach and affect the Florida Peninsula later in the holiday weekend. It is still too soon to know the finer details of the potential impacts to South Florida.
