.SYNOPSIS...
A strong coastal low pressure system will linger off the
Carolina coast through the weekend, slowly making its way
northeastward. Meanwhile, strong high pressure will build into
New England tonight, bringing a reinforcing shot of cold air
with it. The high will move slowly eastward into the Canadian
Maritimes this weekend while low pressure drifts northeastward
offshore. A second area of low pressure may develop near the
Carolinas and move northeastward during the first half of next
week. High pressure will then build into the region from the
west into the middle portion of the week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Surface low pressure is located off the Carolinas' coast as a
strong cutoff upper low slides across the southeast CONUS.
Dense cirrus in association with this system have drift into
the eastern portions of the forecast area. Haven't seen much in
the way of shower activity thus far over southern MD and the
southern waters. This chance is very slight, as the area of low
pressure will remain well to our south, while meandering off the
Carolina coast. The cirrus will continue to drift eastward
through the night, with a cold north to north-northwesterly
flow. This should will lead to slightly below average
temperatures, with overnight lows in the upper 20s to mid 30s.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
A strong surface high pressure will build into the northeast and
into the Canadian maritimes over the weekend. Meanwhile, the
aforementioned coastal low will slowly inch up the east coast,
but remain well offshore. Tightening pressure gradient between
the strengthening coastal low and a blocking high pressure will
lead to gusty winds across the region, primarily east of the
Blue Ridge, but especially over the waters. Periods of clouds
and brisk northeasterly winds will linger much of the weekend
with below normal temperatures (low 40s for highs), especially
on Saturday. Overnight lows into Sunday will be well below
average, into the mid to upper 20s along/west of I-95 and low to
mid 30s east of I-95. Rain chances increase throughout the day
on Sunday, as the coastal low drifts up the east coast, but
should remain far enough offshore to keep any significant
rainfall to the east. Could see some light rain though,
primarily east of I-95. Some guidance does bring precipitation
far enough west overnight Sunday to mix with some frozen
precipitation, primarily north and west of I-70. This is a very
low probability though, as most guidance keeps things well to
the east at this point.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Reasonable agreement across the model suite in regards to large
scale features through the long term. At the start of the period,
low pressure well off the Delmarva coast continues to move
northeastward into New England territory which will allow a second
shortwave to move into the region from the west. Interactions
between the shortwave and the departing low will try to induce new
precipitation development on the backside of the low, even though
the low's center will be near Cape Cod by the day's end. For
now, expect lots of clouds Monday with the chance of a few
spotty showers around late Monday into early Tuesday.
On Tuesday the low and the shortwave are passing well northeast of
the region as high pressure builds in from the west. This reduces
the risk for rain through mid-week. However, the region remains
under a trough influence and thus can't completely rule out a stray
convective shower or perhaps some upslope rain/snow showers in the
mountains.
Overall, expect conditions to remain mainly dry through Thursday with
temperatures remaining slightly below average. Temperatures moderate
some by late next week, as upper-level ridging begins to take hold.

.AVIATION /02Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
VFR conditions expected through Saturday, with mostly high
clouds around, in relation to an area of low pressure off the
Carolina coast. Winds out of the NNW will gradually increase and
turn out of the NNE tonight into the day tomorrow. Gusts in the
20-25 knot range seem likely for all terminals except for MRB,
which should remain below 20 knots.
Lower clouds, and possibly some light rain (best chance at DCA,
BWI and MTN), begin to build in Saturday night into Sunday
morning as coastal low pressure slowly slides up the east coast,
so MVFR CIGs will be possible starting overnight Saturday.
Gusty northerly winds continue on Sunday, primarily at BWI,
where gusts in the 20-25 knot range will again be possible. All
other terminals will begin to see winds decrease, but an
occasional 20 knot gust is not out of the question. Northerly to
northwesterly Winds really start to die down across the area
into Sunday night.
Sub-VFR possible Monday with rain potentially developing over
the region while another coastal low moves northward up the
coast, low confidence on track though at this time.
VFR conditions should return by Tuesday into the middle part of
the week, as high pressure slides in from the west.

.MARINE...
The development of a coastal low pressure system off the
southeast coast that will drift to the northeast through the
weekend will bring windy conditions to the waters. Winds will
begin to increase this evening, with Small Craft Advisories in
effect starting at 6 PM. Gale conditions are expected after
midnight across the central Bay and lower tidal Potomac, so Gale
Warnings are in effect from midnight until Saturday evening.
As the coastal low drifts north on Sunday, gusty winds still
expected, especially on the Chesapeake Bay. As a result,
continued the Small Craft Advisory until at least Sunday
morning, but will likely go farther in later updates. Not
confident enough to continue the Gale Warning into Saturday
night/Sunday morning at this time, but it will be very close,
and may be included in a future update.
Small Craft conditions could even linger into Monday morning, as
low pressure pulls away to the northeast. However, thinking
winds will finally begin to taper off by Monday afternoon.
Sub-SCA conditions expected then on Tuesday and Wednesday, as
high pressure slides in from the west.
