.AVIATION...
Current thunderstorm activity was quickly moving through KLBB and
KPVW but is not expected to produce much wind with continued LIFR
conditions. Although some clearing is expected after the
thunderstorms pass, dense fog is expected to move back into the
terminals shortly. KCDS will likely see thunderstorm activity as
well early this afternoon as the activity moves east. Improvement
in visbys is expected late this afternoon at all TAF sites but
CIGS will likely remain in IFR category. A line of thunderstorms
is then expected around 04-06Z at KLBB/KPVW and 06-08Z at KCDS
which could bring strong and variable winds. Historically strong
winds out of the west will begin to increase by late Wednesday
morning.

.UPDATE...
The forecast is still on track for the rest of this afternoon and
overnight. However, the dense fog advisory was extended through 5
pm for areas on the caprock. Although some clearing is expected
behind the line of thunderstorms, fog is expected to move back in. The
current batch of thunderstorms moving through the region has
little chance of severe weather associated with it. Surface
heating in southeastern New Mexico combined with dewpoints in the
upper 50s and possibly lower 60s will create additional
thunderstorm development late this afternoon. This convection will
likely be in the form of strongly rotating discrete supercells.
The farther east this convection moves, the less favorable
environment it will be moving in to. However, very strong low
level turning in the lower level winds will promote a tornado
threat as the storms approach the southwestern South Plains. A
QLCS type system is still expected late tonight into early
Wednesday morning. This squall line is expected to move into West
Texas around 9-10pm, Lubbock around 11pm-midnight, and the
Rolling Plains 1-2am. Very strong large scale lift is seen in
water vapor imagery around southeast AZ/southwest NM and will move
east this evening initiating convection closer to the region.

.SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS LIKELY THIS EVENING AND OVERNIGHT FOLLOWED
BY A LONG-LIVED HIGH WIND EVENT ON WEDNESDAY...

DISCUSSION...
TODAY AND TONIGHT: Surface observations and regional webcams
at 3 AM revealed widespread fog, drizzle and stratus within an
increasingly moist E-SE flow regime. Surface winds remain weak,
but a couple thousand feet aloft is where the biggest changes were
underway. This process involved strong warm air advection along
an 850mb warm front aligned from roughly Carlsbad northeast to
Lubbock to Caprock Canyons, with the nose of a low level jet
directed across the western South Plains. Composite radar data
shows a slow uptick in light reflectivities aloft, but thus far
isentropic ascent has not been productive for precip generation
after midnight. However, this theme is expected to improve near
daybreak with the arrival of a 100 knot upper jet max which in
turn amplifies the LLJ to 50 knots or better. Most models and CAMs
are keying on this scenario, but this delayed onset of precip may
imply the greatest corridor of elevated thunderstorms ends up
migrating to the north and northwest of Lubbock as warm air
advection shifts slowly northward through the morning. Have kept
PoPs generous for now through the morning hours mainly on the
Caprock and southern Panhandle before a distinct lull likely
develops this afternoon in response to mid-level subsidence
downstream of very strong ascent bulls-eyeing in NM. This
subsidence won't be deep enough to rid us of stratus, but dense
fog should taper back by this afternoon as milder temps and
dewpoints in the low-to-mid 50s advect northward ahead of a warm
front expected to reach Highway 380 by late afternoon. On that
note, the Dense Fog Advisory was extended until 1 PM and may
require further extension if the HRRR is correct.

Otherwise, the ingredients for a fast-moving and severe squall
line remain on track this evening and overnight as incredibly
stout height falls and a strong Pacific cold front plow east
courtesy of a negatively tilted trough. Although a window exists
for isolated supercells later this afternoon ahead of this line
(mainly across our far SW zones along the nose of a decent
MLCAPE axis), deep subsidence and capping well ahead of the
Pacific front look to prevent this scenario from materializing.
What we will be monitoring closely is the potential for QLCS
mesos and tornadoes this evening and tonight along the squall line
given 0-1 km shear ratcheting up to 50 knots which is more than
sufficient for such episodes. SPC's tornado outlook encompasses
this threat nicely across the southern half of our CWA along and
just north of the warm front where SRH values will be maximized.
Even though this squall line should race east at highway speeds,
rich PWATs over 1/2 inch and incredible lift will still produce heavy
downpours and some nuisance/minor flooding. The severe hail
threat is expected to take a backseat to downbursts and even
brief tornadoes as the squall line should be fully mature upon
reaching our western zones around 8 to 9 PM. Barring some
stratiform wake region precip, rain should quickly wane from W-E
once the squall line passes.

WEDNESDAY AND BEYOND: Rapid surface cyclogenesis will focus
across far SE Colorado and adjacent areas of KS on Wednesday as
the upper cyclone slows considerably while also intensifying
drastically. This process puts our forecast area under a swath of
intense 850mb flow of 40-50 knots through the entire day. Although
confidence is high in a High Wind Warning, we have held off for
now after coordination with our neighboring offices. Some light
rain showers may clip our NW zones Wed night as a potent mid-
level cold pocket rotates eastward on the SW edge of the departing
cyclone, but temp profiles should remain mild enough for this to
remain liquid. A Canadian front meanwhile will slide south
overnight and through all of the region on Thursday ahead of
steady northerly winds. Farther upstream, a slow moving upper low
is still progged to advance over the South Plains this weekend
with perhaps some rain showers in the offing, but this potential
still looks comparably better in NM where upslope easterly flow
should encourage better ascent. Thereafter, winds aloft remain
cyclonic, but veer more NW downstream of a longwave ridge poised
over most of the Rockies. This flow should deliver some cool air
reinforcements with little/no drama otherwise through Tuesday.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for the South Plains, Rolling
Plains and the far Southern Texas Panhandle.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Widespread dense fog is expected to improve late this afternoon.
A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for the South Plains and extreme
southwestern Texas Panhandle until 5 PM. Later this afternoon,
thunderstorms are likely to develop in southeastern New Mexico
and spread northeast. Some of these storms will be capable of
producing hail up to nickel size and brief tornadoes. After
sunset, a squall line is expected to race east across the region
accompanied by downburst winds as high as 80 mph, some severe hail
near quarter size, and heavy downpours. Strong low level wind
shear along this squall line may also support the development of
brief tornadoes, mainly across the southern South Plains near a
warm front.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

A long-lived high wind event is expected over all of the region
on Wednesday south of a rapidly intensifying area of low
pressure. Westerly winds of 40 to 50 mph with gusts near 70 mph
will be possible for potentially 10 or more hours in addition to
widespread blowing dust.

Limited storm spotter activation is possible later today and tonight.
Storm motions ahead of the squall line will be around 45 mph to
the northeast, while the squall line should move due east at 55 to
60 mph.
