Strong surface ridge over the forecast area early this morning leading
to cold and dry conditions, and finally much lighter winds.
Temperatures will be slightly below normal today and tonight with
just some high level cloudiness.

.LONG TERM... (Friday through Wednesday)

The upper level disturbance that will be impacting our area
beginning tomorrow was moving eastward into southern CA early
this morning. The latest NAM and ECMWF models have trended
stronger with this southern stream shortwave as it phases with
northern stream shortwaves dropping through the northern Plains,
developing into a closed upper level low over the central Plains
by Friday night. Will be following the NAM and ECMWF model
guidance with this storm system as they have similar solutions,
and the operational GFS continues to appear a little too weak with
the upper level trough and too far south with the track of the
surface low. Precipitation may spread eastward into parts of
central and southeast MO as early as late Friday morning, then
into eastern MO, west of the Mississippi River Friday afternoon
as upper level divergence increases ahead of the approaching upper
level trough, and as low-mid level warm air advection strengthens
over central and southeast MO on the nose of a southwesterly low
level jet. May see temperatures drop some Friday afternoon due to
evaporative cooling as the low levels saturate. This should also
lead to a precipitation type of mainly snow, although there may be
enough of an elevated warm layer across central and southeast MO
Friday afternoon and evening for some sleet as well looking at
model forecast soundings. It appears that the greatest snowfall
intensities will occur Friday night leading to hazardous travel
conditions. Although snowfall rates may drop off Saturday morning
its looking like at least light snow will continue and may
actually ramp up again for Saturday afternoon and evening across
parts of central MO and southwest IL, left of the track of the
850 mb low which will move through southern portions of MO and IL
and eventually into western KY by early Sunday morning. The snow
should taper off to flurries by Sunday morning. With confidence
increasing that this winter storm may bring heavy snow
accumulations to much of our region have issued a Winter Storm
Watch for Friday afternoon through Saturday night for most of the
forecast area, except parts of northeast MO and west central IL
where snowfall amounts should be a little less. Drier weather is
expected for the start of the next work week with temperatures
warming above normal by Tuesday as an upper level ridge moves
eastward into the central US, and surface winds become
southwesterly as a surface ridge shifts south of the region.

.AVIATION... (For the 18z TAFs through 18z Friday Afternoon)

VFR conditions are expected with light and generally variable wind
through early this afternoon. Winds will begin to turn out of the
southeast late this afternoon and evening, but should remain
between 5-10 knots.
High and mid clouds will gradually increase from the southeast
overnight tonight and into Friday morning. This will run ahead of
an approaching system that is expected to bring a mix of rain and
snow to the area just beyond the TAF period. KCOU is likely to be
the first impacted by Friday afternoon with thickening and
lowering cloud bases. MVFR ceilings could develop at KCOU as soon
as 16z-17z. Expect reductions in visibility as rain and snow
moves in. However, high impact conditions should hold off until
after 18z, especially for locations north and east of KCOU.
SPECIFICS FOR KSTL:
VFR conditions are expected through the remainder of this
afternoon, thanks to light and variable winds, coupled with thin
mid to high clouds. This theme will continue into this evening and
overnight period. Any changes will be minor as light winds shift
out of the southeast and increase slightly.
The main concerns will be centered around the approaching storm
system Friday afternoon. Ceilings will thicken and lower to MVFR
by late afternoon and evening. Rain and snow is expected to
develop southwest to northeast after 18z, but will likely
result in at least minor reductions to visibility after 21z.
The main challenge will be the onset of the precipitation as it
overcomes dry air. Once air becomes completely saturated and
precipitation falls, rain and snow will change to snow around the
end of the TAF period or just after. Ceilings will drastically
lower and with the snow we can expect visibilities to be greatly
reduced below MVFR beyond 00z tomorrow evening.
