A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of
accumulating snow will primarily cause travel difficulties. Roads
may rapidly become slippery once the snow begins, so motorists
should plan for a slower than normal trip. Be especially alert
when approaching bridges, overpasses, and curves.

.SHORT TERM...  (Through Late Tuesday Afternoon)

The sharp cold front that pushed through the area this morning can
be visualized on satellite imagery, stretching from the Great Lakes,
southwest into Arkansas. The front continues to progress to the
south and east this afternoon with a deep cold air mass filling in
behind the boundary.

Strong northwest flow behind the front has resulted gusts of 40-45
mph early this morning over central and northeast Missouri as
winds just off the surface topped 50 knots. Though 45 mph gusts
haven't transpired further east, 30-35 mph gusts have been more
common. Gusts of 25-35 mph will be possible mainly along an north
of I-70 through the evening before wind tapers off after 00z.
Therefore, the current wind advisory will be allowed to expire
with no plans to expand/extend this evening.

Current surface analysis shows a wide spread in temperatures this
afternoon, spanning the mid-40s just along/ahead of the front
(southeast Missouri and southern Illinois), to the lower teens just
behind the front (northeast Missouri and west central Illinois).
Farther north, 850 mb temperatures drop to near -20C, where current
surface obs have temperatures well into the single digits.

Northwest flow will aid in bringing this air further south overnight
tonight. Embedded within the northwest flow is a subtle hint at a
mid-level disturbance rotating around the southern end of the large
scale upper level trough. Enough low/mid level moisture lingers
behind the front with just enough lift to result in light snow and
flurries over northeast Missouri and west central Illinois this
afternoon. This area seems to weaken as it tracks southeast and
though no accumulations are expected, this was accounted for with
the mention of flurries through 00z this evening.

Moisture profiles show much drier air working into the mid and upper
levels from the west/southwest this evening and overnight. This
trend is also apparent in satellite imagery with breaks in the cloud
deck over central and southwest Missouri. This may lead to a brief
period of scattered clouds and possibly some clearing through early
Tuesday. The next clipper quickly moves in from the northwest on
Tuesday. Clouds fill back into the area and while this is no
blockbuster clipper, there is enough consistency in some of the hi-
res guidance to provide confidence for light snow/flurries Tuesday
afternoon. No accumulation is expected.

Temperatures will range from the single digits north to the teens
south tonight. Highs Tuesday will likely remain in the teens along
and north of I-70 with 20s to the south. Though wind chills will not
quite be advisory criteria, they could be well below zero at times,
especially over northeast Missouri.

.LONG TERM...  (Tuesday Night through Next Monday)

The core of the coldest Arctic air and accompanying surface high
pressure will build into the area Tuesday night into Wednesday, with
the surface high centered within the middle Mississippi Valley
Wednesday afternoon. It still looks like there is a threat of light
snow across southeast MO on Tuesday night in response to
strengthening low level frontogenetic forcing associated with
deepening and intensifying cold air.

Bitter cold remains the screaming message. Tuesday night into
Wednesday morning still looks like the coldest time frame with low
temperatures 20 to 35 degrees below normal, and highs on Wednesday
some 30 to 40 degrees below average. A few places may see record low
temperatures, especially across northeast MO and west central IL.
Record "low" high temperatures on Wednesday are also in jeopardy.
Dangerous wind chills are expected Tuesday night into Wednesday
morning across the entire area, with values near 35 below across
parts of northeast MO and west central IL, and values as low 15
below as far south as southeast MO and southwest IL. The largest
contribution from the wind will be Tuesday night into early
Wednesday morning when gusty northwest winds will be present. The
magnitude of the wind chills will diminish on Wednesday afternoon as
temperatures rise and surface winds weaken, albeit they will
still remain very cold. The wind chill watch has been converted to
a wind chill warning for northern areas of the CWA, and a wind
chill advisory for southern sections starting Tuesday night. See
the actual product for expiration times. At this point we are
thinking only northern MO and west central IL will see dangerous
wind chills extending into Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
For several days we have been discussing uncertainty in the
magnitude of the cold during this Wednesday night into Thursday
morning time frame. There is greater model consensus that clouds
will overspread the area from the west and northwest beginning as
early as Wednesday afternoon in response to frontogenetical
forcing and WAA aloft on the west side of the retreating dome of
high pressure and also attendant with a northwest flow short wave.
In fact some of the models want to develop light snow across
western parts of the CWA as early as Wednesday afternoon or night.
The development of a light snow band is new this early in the
forecast, and at this time I am hesitant to jump on that until we
see some better continuity rather than chasing with low pops.
Anyway these clouds overspreading the area on Wednesday night into
Thursday morning would be detrimental to radiational cooling and
the surface high is now forecast to retreat into the Ohio Valley
by 12z Thursday. Cumulatively these factors argue for "warmer
mins" albeit still quite cold. The chance of snow on Thursday
remains consistent in the GFS and we continue to retain chance
pops.

The pattern shift and temperature warm-up discussed yesterday
starting Friday and continuing through the weekend is still in play.
That said, whenever there is a pattern change, and especially at
these time ranges, the details in the pattern shift and sensible
weather vary. That is the case and an ensemblistic approach
continues warming temperatures to above average levels for the
upcoming weekend, and a chance of rain Sunday-Monday as an upper
trof and cold front advance eastward from the Plains.

.AVIATION...  (For the 18z TAFs through 18z Tuesday Afternoon)

The primary issue through the period will deal with post-frontal
northwesterly wind gusts of 30-35 knots this afternoon and
evening.

A strong cold front was pushing northwest to southeast through the
region this morning and should clear all terminals by early/mid
afternoon. Behind the front, winds turn out of the northwest with
observed gusts exceeding 40 knots in some locations over northwest
and north central Missouri. While winds aren't likely to be that
high over local terminals, winds 30-37 knots have already been
observed in portions of central and northeast Missouri, as well as
west-central Illinois. This core of wind will progress eastward
this afternoon before things taper off through late this evening.

Ceilings have primarily been MVFR through the area with some
improvement creeping in from the west. Visible satellite shows a
large break in the deck over western and southwest Missouri, some
of which could work into central Missouri. Low level moisture
should keep skies from scattering out until late tonight, but
ceilings have already begun to trend to high end MVFR/low VFR
territory. This is running a bit ahead of schedule, so we may see
a bit of an earlier trend toward VFR ceilings with some breaks
possible.

For now, the main message is for VFR to work back in from the west
this afternoon and eventually over all TAF sites after 00z
tonight.

SPECIFICS FOR KSTL:

A cold has crossed the terminal, which will begin to shift wind
out of the northwest this afternoon. The main issue behind the
front will be post-frontal winds gusting around 30 knots this
afternoon and early evening. Winds will gradually die off after
00z tonight.

MVFR ceilings are beginning to lift in portions of central
Missouri, which may work in over KSTL this afternoon. Could see a
few breaks in the clouds, but low level moisture may keeps a
broken borderline MVFR/VFR deck overhead until after 00z. Dry air
should allow for ceilings to finally lift to VFR overnight.

Another weak impulse/clipper drops down from the northwest
Tuesday. This may bring a low chance of flurries and MVFR clouds,
along with gusts around 25 knots. For now, left the TAF dry with
room to include it in later updates, should later guidance give
stronger suggestion at any precipitation.

A prolonged period of bitter cold is expected Tuesday night through
Thursday. During this time frame the wind chills are forecast to
drop to dangerously cold levels of 15 to 40 below zero across the
northern half of Missouri into western central and southwestern
Illinois.
