.SHORT TERM... (Through Late Sunday Night)

The near term continues to focus on the impending winter storm
system for later tonight and into Sunday. In general the models
have come in weaker and flatter with most of the features and
there is no longer a well-defined or closed 850 mm low. Also this
system continues to lack the attributes of typical heavy snow
producers such as a closed mid level circulation, an amplified
upper trof, coupled jet streaks, a closed or well-defined 850 low,
instability, and longevity to name a few. Instead we have a fast-
moving low-amplitude short wave trof providing synoptic scale
forcing and forcing from mid level frontogenesis as the primary
processes for vertical motion. These drivers are also centered a
bit further north, and now the primary axis of snow should be
west-east oriented near or just a tad south of Interstate 70. The
onset also continues to appear slower. There is a slight chance of
rain or snow in far southern MO this evening, but I really don't
expect to see much of anything. The main thrust will come
overnight with a large/wide west-east band of snow quickly
spreading east into the CWA after 06z. The CAA is stronger
tonight and across southern parts of the CWA where we previous
thought there was some sleet potential, soundings indicate the
atmosphere will be cold enough for all snow. Due to the fast
motion we have around a 6 hour window of decent accumulation
potential with snowfall rates near a half inch/hour. The rates
maybe a bit higher in central MO overnight. Most of the
accumulating snow should be over by early afternoon and the snow
chances wind down fast on Sunday afternoon as the short wave zips
east into the western OH Valley. Total accumulations will range
from 1-3 inches in the northern and southern CWA, with an axis of
3-4 inches through the central CWA with spots over 4 inches most
likely in central MO. Guidance-wise we continue to favor a
GFS/ECMWF blend which are pretty close and have shown the most
overall consistency with this event. We are still expecting
impacts with hazardous travel conditions likely on Sunday morning.
Increasing and gusty northerly winds will also produce some
blowing and drifting snow. The advisory area still looks on track
- it might begin a bit early east of the MS River and end a bit
late west of the MS River. We can evaluate the end time adjustment
tomorrow morning when the post-snow impacts of blowing and
drifting are a bit easier to gage.
The period from Sunday night into Tuesday still looks exceptionally
cold with temperatures 25 to 30 degrees below average for early
March. The post-frontal gusty northerly winds will diminish on
Sunday evening and through the overnight hours. Across far
northeast MO and west central IL, the wind however may still
remain high enough with lows falling to near zero to produce
dangerous wind chills near 15 below zero late Sunday night and
early Monday morning. If these temperatures and wind values hold
then we will likely need a wind chill advisory for a small area in
the future.

.LONG TERM... (Monday through Next Saturday)

A deep longwave trof across eastern NOAM and anchoring vortex near
Hudson Bay will maintain the well below average temperatures into
midweek. In fact a reinforcing surge of cold air will spread
across the area on Tuesday as a shortwave digs into the eastern
longwave position.
During the later part of the week the pattern will undergo a
significant change as the eastern longwave trof progresses into
the western Atlantic and a more zonal flow develops allowing
Pacific energy to traverse eastward. A migratory trof will
traverse the region Thursday into Thursday night bringing another
chance of precipitation. The GFS and ECWMF differ quite a bit with
the amplitude of this trof and strength and position of the
associated surface system. The GFS basically has a well-developed
surface low tracking from northern KS across northern MO with a
northward moving warm front and small cold sector north of the
retreating warm front supportive of wintry precipitation across
northeast MO and west central IL. Alternatively the ECMWF keeps a
much weaker low confined to the southern Plains region and higher
pressure centered to the northeast in the vicinity of the Great
Lakes, which keeps the entire area in cold easterly low level flow
and supports wintry precipitation CWA-wide. This will evolve with
time and something to monitor.

Overall, not much change from the prev TAF forecast. While some of
the latest guidance has slowed onset of snow, latest RADAR trends
suggest these models are too slow. Still expect snow to
develop/advect quickly east late tonight into Sun morning. Have
delayed onset at KCOU/KUIN, but only by an hour. Have delayed MVFR
cigs by a few hours, as what MVFR cigs were in the region have
largely dissipated. Still expect a quick shot of heavy snow
shortly after sunrise at KCOU, with the bulk of the snow done by
mid morning. Cigs are expected to be slow to lift, but should be
VFR by mid to late afternoon...around 18z for KUIN. Northerly
winds will increase with gusts to around 20 kts.
SPECIFICS FOR KSTL/KSUS/KCPS: Expect low VFR cigs to remain in
place ahead of approaching system and snow. Timing of snow onset
still appears to be on track. After a quick shot of mod to heavy
snow, expect cigs to lift to VFR by the evening hours. Northerly
winds will increase with gusts around 20 kts during the afternoon.
