Arctic air mass has taken hold over the region with temperatures
well below freezing. As of 08z, temperatures range from 10 degrees
above zero in southeast Missouri to around 10 below zero in
northeast Missouri. Even though gusty northwest winds will slowly
diminish, dangerous wind chill values will persist through the next
24 to 36 hours.
Onto more pressing weather concerns. All of the current CAMs show
decent clipper system sliding southeast through region today into
early tonight. Majority of the models have axis of light snow just
south of St. Louis metro area between 21z Wednesday and 05z
Thursday. However, the trends have been to slowly shift this axis to
the north towards St. Louis. All of this is due to strong low level
frontogenesis generally around 850mb. While there is only a few
hundredths of qpf with this system, with the very cold airmass, snow
ratios are forecast to be around 22:1. Could see up to an inch of
snow possible wherever this narrow band sets up. Because it will
fall just before, during and after the evening commute, this could
cause a few travel issues. Will issue a Winter Weather Advisory for
areas along I-70, including St. Louis metro area and portions of
southeast Missouri from 21z Wednesday through 06z Thursday.
As for temperatures, highs will struggle to warm up much today.
Highs will range from around minus 5 in the far north to the upper
teens in the far south. Another cold night tonight with lows ranging
from minus 10 far north to around 10 above far south. With wind
chill values only in advisory criteria this afternoon through
tonight in the north, will downgrade wind chill warning to an
advisory after 21z Wednesday.
By Thursday, as surface ridge moves off to the east, temperatures
will begin to moderate with highs in the upper teens to mid 30s.
Could see another shot of light snow for northeastern portions of
the forecast area as a clipper system slides through, mainly east of
Mississippi river beginning Thursday afternoon.

Low level warm advection will increase on Thursday night as an 850mb
trough drifts east from the Great Plains into the Midwest. The
Arctic high over the Ohio Valley will try to impede the flow of warm
air back into Missouri, but all short range guidance now has the
warm front drifting up to between St. Louis and Quincy overnight.
Models to produce some spotty light QPF...mainly south of the warm
front Thursday night, but there doesn't seem to be any consistency
in timing or placement of the QPF so this may just be the typical
false QPF due to moisture return in warm advection. Regardless, the
QPF is so light that it's barely worth mentioning. It looks like
there will be a wide range of low temperatures across the front with
low teens in northeast Missouri where the tail end of the Arctic air
will be lingering up to the low 30s south of I-70.
A weak low forms along the front on Friday and travels east into
Illinois through 18Z. This may briefly push the cold air back to
the south slightly in spite of continuing warm advection aloft.
Therefore the temperature forecast across northeast Missouri and
west central Illinois for Friday is challenging. There is the
additional complication of snow pack up there which according to our
cooperative observers is still 2-4 inches deep and in some spots 5-6
inches. MOS looks a little too warm given the position of the front
and the snow pack so I lowered highs a few degrees north of the
front to right around freezing. The warm front finally pushes off
to the north on Friday night which will finally allow warmer air to
stream up into northern Missouri and west central Illinois.
The weekend continues to look very mild with temperatures well above
normal as warm advection continues across the mid Mississippi
Valley. Highs in the 40s and 50s will prevail on Saturday and
temperatures kiss 60 on Sunday in some parts of the forecast area.
Unfortunately, it may be somewhat cloudy and gloomy with only a few
peeks of sunshine...and there is a chance of showers on Sunday
afternoon ahead of the next short wave which will be digging into
the central Plains. While well organized precipitation doesn't look
very likely, the GFS and ECMWF so show some weak to moderate 850mb
moisture convergence over Missouri and Illinois during the
afternoon, and a diffluent pattern aloft to help increase lift.
Models are in much better agreement this morning than they were
yesterday with the Monday system. All medium range models move the
surface low from the eastern Plains up to near the
Michigan/Minnesota border by 12Z Monday, and push the cold front
into the forecast area during the day Monday. The GFS more
aggressive with the front, moving it all the way through Missouri and
Illinois by 00Z Tuesday. The EC and GEM stall the front as the
upper short wave becomes strongly negatively tilted and the front
takes on an east-west orientation and stalls over Missouri and
Illinois. Obviously the position of the front will have a large
impact on temperatures late Monday through Tuesday...and will
possibly have an impact on precipitation chances and types as well.
The EC and GEM produce a 1/4 inch or more of QPF north of the front
in the cold air. While temperatures in the column probably won't be
cold enough for snow, it may be cold enough at the surface for
freezing rain during the morning in northern Missouri and west
central Illinois. Confidence is not high though so have kept
mention of freezing rain out of the forecast for now.

NW winds will slowly diminish Wed morning. Can not rule out a
brief gust at KCOU or KUIN overnight, but these areas seem to be
slightly decoupled. Otherwise, VFR conditions are currently
expected to prevail. Guidance is suggesting the track of the next
round of snow may shift further to the NE and impact
KCOU/KSUS/KCPS. If these trends continue, snow will need to be
added during the late afternoon and early evening hours.
SPECIFICS FOR KSTL: VFR and dry thru the period. However, trends
are suggesting the next round of snow may shift further NE
compared to previous forecasts. This would suggest snow late Wed
afternoon into the early evening hours. Otherwise, NW winds will
slowly diminish Wed morning and remain under 10 kts thru the
remainder of the period.
