.SHORT TERM...  (Through Late Tonight)

Northwest upper level flow will gradually turn zonal today,
advecting scattered to broken mid-level clouds currently over the
western Dakotas into the area. Meanwhile, high pressure will slide
to the SE of the mid-Mississippi Valley, turning surface winds to
the south today and ushering warmer temps back into the area. The
warm up will be tempered a bit by the mid-level clouds, but we'll
still be 5-10 degrees warmer than we were yesterday. Clouds will
remain in the vicinity of the region overnight, which combined with
continued southerly flow, should keep low temperatures nearly 10
degrees warmer than what we're seeing this morning.

.LONG TERM...  (Monday through Saturday)

An upper level shortwave will traverse the Midwest on Monday,
driving a surface low across the northern Great Lakes. An
attendant cold front will sweep through the mid-Mississippi Valley
on Monday afternoon, though moisture ahead of and along the front
looks to be rather limited. Therefore will be keeping the
forecast dry, in line with the vast majority of deterministic and
probabilistic guidance. Dry weather will persist into Tuesday as
dry NW flow behind the front reinforces below normal temperatures
and surface high pressure builds into the region.

High pressure will move east of the region by Tuesday evening,
establishing southerly flow across the region. This will draw low
level moisture into the region ahead of the next shortwave and
attendant cold front on Wednesday. The combination warm air
advection ahead of the front and forcing along the front itself may
provide sufficient lift to produce light rain across the region.
Precip is the most likely toward southern Missouri and far
southern IL where moisture will be the greatest.

The front is progged to stall just to the south of the area on
Wednesday night as a sharp shortwave digs into the western CONUS.
The wave will then swing through the central CONUS on Thursday,
lighting up precipitation along and south of the stalled front.
Questions remain regarding both the northward extent of the precip
and precip timing, but nearly all forecast guidance shows precip
extending at least to I-70 from late Wednesday night into Thursday.
Depending on how far precip extending on Thursday morning,
temperatures may be cool enough to support some minor snow
accumulations. NE flow behind the late week precip will reinforce
the cooler pattern, with well below normal temperatures expected to
linger through next weekend.
