.SHORT TERM... (Through Late Friday Afternoon)

Band of snow is currently moving across the CWA early this morning.
Visibilites in the band have been between 1-3 miles based on the
surface observations, and this is consistent with what has been
seen in the area webcams. There has also been some light freezing
rain and sleet reported within this band as RAP soundings are
close to zero in the lowest levels resulting in some mixed and
light freezing precipitation. Latest GOES imagery is showing this
deformation band moving quickly eastward early this morning and
the RAP/NAM has it moving out of the CWA by mid morning. Until
then, have kept winter weather advisory across northeast Missouri
and west central Illinois where light snow continues to
accumulate. Think there will be additional amounts around 1 inch.
Any ice accumulation will be mainly on elevated surfaces because
of warm surface temperatures. Further south, do not expect much
snowfall or ice accumulation as the southern part of the band
moves quickly through this morning. There still may be some
flurries that linger over Illinois into the afternoon hours.
Temperatures have fallen below or near freezing over much of the
Freeze Warning this morning. Will continue it through this
morning. Temperatures will not recover much today with early
clouds and cold air advection. It will be quite blustery today
with northwest winds gusting to 25 to 30 mph in the tight pressure
gradient. Highs will only be in the 30s.
Have upgraded the Freeze Watch to a Freeze Warning tonight. Still
expect lows tonight to be in the 20s areawide. There will be a
recovery in temperatures tomorrow as winds turn out of the
southwest as a high moves east. With mainly sunny skies, highs
will be 10-15 degrees warmer than today.

.LONG TERM... (Friday Night through Wednesday)

Still expect dry weather through the weekend as ECMWF/GFS as well
as the GEFS mean is showing the upper flow turning zonal as a
large surface high moves across the central CONUS. Models are
still showing another shortwave trough will move into the upper
Midwest by early next week which will bring a cold front through
Missouri and Illinois on Monday night into Tuesday. QPF output
from the operational models and GEFS plumes are still showing some
uncertainty with PoPs chances with the passage of this cold
front, but will still carry slight chance of showers Monday night
into Tuesday.
Temperatures will remains below normal through the period based on
GEFS mean temps. Only exception will be on Monday and Tuesday
when there will be warm air advection between the retreating
surface high and the cold front.

Light snow will continue for the next few hours until a band of
snow pulls away from the region. Visibilities will likely be worse
at KUIN for a longer time than at any other terminal because
radar shows stronger returns in that part of the band. Ceilings
could briefly return to IFR prior to 18z at any of the terminals,
but MVFR ceilings should prevail for most of the first 0-6 hours
of the valid TAF period. As the band of snow moves away from the
region, clouds will also pull away, and ceiling heights will
likely reach VFR by 21z at all terminals before further clearing
occurs. Gusty northwest winds are also expected with gusts
reaching 25-30 kts at times before the winds diminish after the
pressure gradient relaxes.
