(Through Late Wednesday Afternoon) Issued at 324 AM CDT Tue Oct 1 2019 The unseasonably warm weather pattern remains entrenched across the mid-Mississippi Valley over the next 24 hours. High temperatures this afternoon should be near or slightly above persistence values due to a slightly warmer start to the day today compared to yesterday. Temperatures are forecast to range from the upper 80s to mid 90s and leaned toward the warmer MAV MET MOS values. A daily record high is forecast today at KSTL, and the daily record for KUIN is also in jeopardy. For more daily record information, please refer to the CLIMATE section below. In addition, the warmest October high temperature for St. Louis of 94F set multiple times looks to be in jeopardy. Lows tonight are forecast to be near persistence values, generally in the upper 60s to mid 70s which is about 20 degrees above normal for early October. A slow-moving cold front will approach far northwestern sections of the CWA late tonight, bringing a chance of showers and thunderstorms. This frontal boundary is forecast to become quasi- stationary on Wednesday confining the higher chances of precipitation to portions of central and northeast Missouri in addition to west-central Illinois. The highest chances for showers and elevated convection appear to be late in the afternoon as a surface low develops across eastern Kansas and mid/upper level forcing for ascent increases downstream of the trough axis. Temperatures on Wednesday are more difficult to pin down due to the frontal boundary across northwestern sections of the CWA. Elected to sharpen the temperature gradient slightly with highs ranging from the mid 70s in portions of northeast Missouri to the low 90s for the St. Louis metro area and points south and east. (Wednesday Night through Monday) Issued at 324 AM CDT Tue Oct 1 2019 Equatorward progress of the cold front will finally commence Wednesday night as the surface low heads northeastward into Indiana. The front should exit the CWA Thursday morning ending the chances for showers and storms. More noticeably, a much cooler airmass will be ushered in behind this boundary. Temperatures are forecast to be about 20 degrees cooler than earlier in the week, getting back to near or even slightly below normal for early October. In other words, more typical conditions for autumn with lows in the 40s and 50s and highs in the 60s and 70s. These temperatures are likely to continue through the weekend and into early next week. Precipitation wise, another cold front is forecast to move through the bi-state region Saturday afternoon and evening bringing a chance of showers. Weak moisture return ahead of this front looks to help limit instability and kept thunder chances confined to a slight chance ahead of the cold front. The Sunday to Monday period remains highly uncertain with respect to precipitation chances. Multiple runs of the ECMWF had amplified a shortwave trough diving south/southeastward into the Mississippi Valley. This lead to rapid deepening of a surface low along the frontal boundary across the mid-south tracking into the Ohio Valley. However, the latest run has dropped this scenario and now matches the deterministic GFS and most of its ensemble members with a more progressive, positively-tilted trough.
