.SHORT TERM...  (Through Late Tuesday Night)

Main concern in the near term continues to be the very warm
temperatures.

Still expect dry and very warm weather through at least Tuesday
as both the GFS/NAM are showing a 500mb upper high remaining
centered over the Mid South through tomorrow night. The cold front
currently over eastern South Dakota into central Nebraska won't
move into northern Missouri until Tuesday night. In the meantime,
the area will remain under the influence of the upper high with
mainly clear skies. Southerly winds will continue to advect
anomalously moist air for this time of year with dewpoints
climbing into the upper 60s to around 70 degrees. With high
temperatures reaching into the 90s today, lows tonight will likely
only fall to around 70 tonight. Highs tomorrow will likely be a
repeat of today given the warm start in the morning, almost full
sunshine, and forecast 850mb temperatures near +20C. Lows tomorrow
night will also only fall into the upper 60s to lower 70s.

There will be a chance of thunderstorms late tomorrow night over far
northeast Missouri into west central Illinois as there will be
increasing low level moisture convergence ahead of an approach cold
front. This is supported by the CAMS which are showing convection
moving into the far northern part of the CWA between 09-12Z

Highlight in the extended part of the forecast continues to be
temperatures cooling down at or below normal by Thursday. All of
the ensemble members from the GEFS on the surface temperature
plumes are in good agreement with this trend. 850mb temperatures
are forecast to drop from the upper teens Celsius this Wednesday
to around +5C next Monday.

Upper flow will become less amplified from midweek through the
weekend. The operational ECMWF/GFS and the GEFS mean is showing
western CONUS trough lifting out into the Northern Plains. As it
does, there is general agreement between the models that an
attendant cold front will move southeast across the area on
Wednesday into Thursday. With the best ascent from the upper
trough staying across the upper Midwest, the coverage of
precipitation will wane as it moves to the south with this system.
It still looks like Thursday night into Friday night will be dry
as low amplitude ridge moves across the area in conjunction with
a surface high. Then it still looks like there will be a chance of
showers and thunderstorms next weekend as the next upper trough
moves across the Midwest with its cold front.
