.SHORT TERM... (Through Late Tonight)

The potential for dangerous heat this afternoon remains the focus
of the forecast. Temperatures and dewpoints hinge largely on
progression of the cold front to our north, which unfortunately
has been rather muddled by last night's MCS. The MCS will also
impact chances for dangerous heat, but given it's deterioration
in eastern MO over the last few hours, I believe at least some of
the cloud cover over our area will be gone by sunrise, allowing
for some recovery this morning.
Back to the progression of the front: Unfortunately model guidance
is really struggling to handle the front, making for a rather
uncertain forecast. Current expectation is for the front to become
more focused somewhere across northern MO after sunrise. Neither
water vapor imagery nor RAP analysis fields show much upper level
support to shunt the front south with much pace today, so I'm
thinking that the front will slowly sag south through the morning.
This should allow for temps to climb into the 90s across much of
the area, with dewpoints lingering in the 70s. This would result
in heat index values in the 100-105 range for many locations.
Should the front come in faster than expected, heat index readings
will obviously be cooler. However, should the front come in a bit
slower, heat index reading will be a tick warmer, reaching
excessive heat warning criteria. Given this uncertainty, and the
fact that we already have an Excessive Heat Warning in place, will
be letting the Excessive Heat Warning ride for much of the area.
CAMs show little precip along the front as it moves through the
region today, but with the lift along the front, it's hard to
imagine that we'll be dry today. Thinking isolated storms will be
possible along and ahead of the front, potentially becoming
scattered later in the afternoon. By this evening, good model
consensus showing an upper level trough dropping south into the
region. This trough should bring additional chances for showers and
storms to the area. Despite weak shear through the period,
instability will be high enough to support a marginal risk for
severe storms across the area. The highest instability will be
toward central MO supporting a slight risk for severe storms.

The cold front should largely be south of the area by Monday
morning. The persistent northwest flow behind the front will
usher in much cooler temperatures for the first half of the week
as high pressure builds into the area. 850 temps are still
forecast to drop to around 12C through Wednesday, which should
translate to surface temperatures in the low 80s. As the high
continues to push east, the flow will gradually turn southwest,
allowing temperatures to slowly moderate by the end of the week.

VFR conditions are expected for the first 0-6 hours, but there is
a great deal of uncertainty after 21/18z for all terminals. A
thunderstorm complex developed last night and pushed outflow
boundaries farther to the south than previously anticipated, and
this has muddled the SHRA/TSRA timing for today. Scattered
SHRA/TSRA should still develop, but the timing is very uncertain.
There may even be two periods of rain: one during the afternoon
(associated with remnant outflows) and the other during the
evening (associated with the cold front or another thunderstorm
complex). Reductions to MVFR or IFR are possible in
thunderstorms. Winds will become northerly to northeasterly behind
the cold front.
