Accumulating snowfall associated with deformation zone is expected
to be about 50 miles further south than previously anticipated.
As a result, further trimmed winter weather advisory, confining it
to parts of southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois where 1-3
inches of snow is forecast. Further to the northwest, flurries and
light snow showers are likely today but little to no accumulation
is expected.

As of 09z Saturday, storm is ongoing across the region with snow in
the far northern portions of forecast area and rain over rest of
forecast area with first wave of activity. Secondary wave of
precipitation is moving northeast out of southwestern MO and
increasing in coverage as it approaches forecast area. In the
meantime, as surface low deepens and slides to the east across
Arkansas, colder air is filtering in behind it across portions of
northeast and central Missouri, so will see the rain mix with and
change over to snow by sunrise. As for the St. Louis metro area, the
colder air will be just a bit slower moving in with the change over
beginning after 6 am across St. Charles County then march southeast
across the metro area with snow everywhere by 10 am. Southeast MO
and southwestern IL will finally see rain change over to snow by
Noon.
00z NAM and GFS indicate decent deformation zone still setting up
just to the southeast of the St. Louis metro area late this morning
through the afternoon hours. Went more with the NAM qpf as the GFS
was too high. As for snowfall amounts, in the warning area, expect
storm totals of 2 to 5 inches, then for areas along I-70 corridor
expecting 1 to 2 inches of snow. As for areas just southeast of St.
Louis there will be an axis of 2 to 3 inches of snow with isolated
higher amounts possible. Warnings and advisories will remain as is
for now.
Through out the day today, winds will pickup and become northerly
with sustained winds between 20 and 30 mph with gusts between 35 and
40 mph at times through early this evening. So could see some
blowing and drifting of snow that does fall. As for temperatures,
they will be falling through out the day as the colder air moves in.
As system exits region early this evening, light snow and gusty
north winds will taper off. Clouds will gradually scatter out from
northwest to southeast. This combined with much colder air will
allow temperatures to drop to near zero far north to the mid teens
far southeast for overnight lows. Wind chill indices will be
between 5 above zero far south to near 10 below zero in the far
north, just below advisory criteria.
Surface ridge will build into the region on Sunday with northwest
flow aloft, so will see increasing clouds through the day on Sunday

.LONG TERM... (Sunday Night through Friday)

Will continue with a dry forecast from Sunday night into Monday
night as the global models show a low amplitude upper ridge moving
across the Midwest. Chances for precipitation will increase by
daybreak Tuesday as low level moisture and large scale ascent
increases ahead of the next upper trough and an attendant cold front
that will move across the area midweek. The global models are still
showing the same signal as 24 hours ago where the northern stream
upper trough will move across Missouri and Illinois quickly Tuesday
into Wednesday while holding a southern stream trough back over the
Southern Plains. Will keep with this solution and start with a
mainly rain event on Tuesday as we will be in surface warm sector
during the day. There may be a small window of snow on Tuesday night
as the cold front sweeps southeast across the area.
As for temperatures...Sunday night and Monday still do not look as
cold as Saturday night and Sunday. There will be some clouds and
winds will turn out of the south behind the low level ridge which
will prevent strong radiational cooling on Sunday night. Temperatures
will climb close to normal on Monday. Temperatures will jump up
above average in the warm sector on Tuesday as highs climb into the
mid to upper 40s.
As opposed to 24 hours ago, all of the global models are keeping the
southern stream trough south of the CWA, so will keep late Wednesday
into Thursday night dry. There will be a chance of snow on Friday
as the next trough dips down into the the Midwest in northwesterly
flow aloft with a strong cold front moving across the area Thursday
night/Friday. Temperatures the rest of the week will remain below
normal with much colder air coming in at the end of the week,
possibly the coldest of the winter so far. Both the GFS and the
ECMWF have 850mb temperatures by next Friday evening dropping to
around -20C at STL!

IFR flight conditions will persist through most of the day today,
before ceilings begin to lift to MVFR then eventually VFR by
tonight as system exits region. As for precipitation, will taper
off from north to south between 17z and 23z Saturday. Gusty north
winds will persist through early this evening, then diminish.
SPECIFICS FOR KSTL:
IFR flight conditions will persist through 23z Saturday, then
improve to VFR by 08z Sunday. As for precipitation, should see
rain become mixed with snow by 13z then to all snow by 15z
Saturday, tapering off by 23z Saturday. Other issue will be the
winds. North winds will become gusty by 13z with gusts to near
35kts at times. As system exits region, winds will diminish by 08z
Sunday.
