.SHORT TERM... (Through Late Wednesday Afternoon)

A cold front was located from central IA across northwest MO early
this morning. Southwest winds of 5-10 mph ahead of the front were
resulting in rather tranquil conditions across most of the CWA. The
exception was along the southeast fringe of the CWA, near and south
of a West Plains-Farmington-Sparta-Centralia line where fog was
occurring and was locally dense in spots. The wind was rather light
in this area and most of the short-term guidance has improvement by
12z or so as the low level wind field increases ahead of the
advancing cold front. The cold front should rocket southeastward
this morning clearing the CWA by midday, in response to a shortwave
trof moving from the Upper Mississippi Valley into the lower Great
Lakes/eastern Ohio Valley. In addition to CAA, strong and gusty
northwest winds will accompany the cold front resulting from the
combination of the tightening pressure gradient and mixing. The RAP
and HRRR suggests that a few wind gusts across northeast MO-west
central and south central IL could hit 45 mph, beginning as early as
mid-morning in northeast MO. In collaboration with neighboring NWS
offices, I had issued a wind advisory from 13-00z today. High
temperatures today will be some 10-15 degrees cooler than Monday as
a result of the CAA with the front.
Additional northwest flow shortwaves digging southeastward tonight
will result in the development of a longwave trof over the eastern
U.S.. These disturbances will bring a subtle but reinforcing surge
of cold air into the area within the low level cyclonic flow.
Wednesday looks like the coldest day we will have seen in awhile
with temperatures more typical for this time of year. A modest
pressure gradient in the cyclonic flow across eastern MO and western
IL through early afternoon will result in more gusty northwest winds
but nothing like today. The wind will diminish by mid afternoon as
big surface high begins sliding from the Plains into western MO.

.LONG TERM... (Wednesday Night through Monday)

Colder temperatures can be expected Wednesday night due to good
radiational cooling as surface winds become light as the surface
ridge axis moves into our forecast area, along with low surface dew
points. Lows Wednesday night should be at or slightly below
seasonal normals. Most significant weather expected this period
will occur Friday through Saturday night as the latest operational
GFS and ECMWF models are now forecasting a potential winter storm
for our area. Precipitation will likely spread into central and
southeast MO Friday afternoon ahead of a southern stream shortwave
over the southern Plains. The precipitation will ramp up Friday
night and expand northward and eastward as a northern stream
shortwave approaches from the northern Plains. The better QPF
should shift eastward into IL and southeast MO by Saturday afternoon
as a surface low moves east-northeastward into MS and AL, and the
850 mb low moves into the TN Valley region by 00Z Sun. There may be
some light lingering precipitation Saturday evening across southeast
MO and southwest IL, but the precipitation should rapidly taper off
across our area Saturday night. Looking at thickness forecasts and
model sounding forecasts it appears that the precipitation type will
be mainly snow with evaporative cooling causing temperatures to
lower Friday afternoon and evening as the low-mid levels saturate.
Could not rule out a period of sleet initially across southeast MO
Friday afternoon. At this time it appears that the higher QPF will
be across southeast MO and southwest IL and hence the greater snow
accumulation amounts. It is too early to pin down exact snow amounts
this far out, plus the model solutions have varied a lot over the
past 24 hours which leads to a low confidence forecast. That being
said the trend is leaning toward accumulating snow across much of
our area Friday night and Saturday which would impact travel.
Preliminary total snow amount forecasts have 2 to 4 inches possible
across northeast and central MO and west central IL with 4 to 6
inches possible across east central and southeast MO and southwest
IL. Dry conditions with seasonal temperatures are expected Sunday
through Monday as a large and strong 1035-1040 mb surface ridge
moves through the region.

The main issue today will be strong and gusty west-northwest winds.
A westerly low level jet is present across the region early this
morning and this is producing marginal conditions for LLWS. By
14-15z mixing will commence ending the LLWS threat while a cold
front will track across the region this morning accompanied by
strong and gusty west-northwest winds gusting to 30+ knots. The
greatest winds will be across northeast MO into west central IL
where KUIN is expected to see wind gusts at times of 35+ knots.
The winds will diminish from 23-00z. VFR flight conditions are
expected through the forecast period.
SPECIFICS FOR KSTL:
The main issue today will be strong and gusty west-northwest winds.
