.SHORT TERM... (Through Late Tonight)

A weak cold front has pushed into northern MO and central IL
beneath zonal flow aloft. Shower activity along the front has
all but diminished due to the much more stable air over the
northern portion of the CWA. Storm activity has been far more
robust over SW MO and especially central KS, where an embedded
shortwave and the low-level jet has initiated an MCS. As the MCS
pushes east into more stable air in MO, it will gradually weaken.
While the MCS weakens and moves into MO this morning, the southward
drift of the cold front will gradually slow before stalling across
the CWA beneath weak upper level height rises. There are still some
questions as to where exactly the front will hang up, but it most
likely will be along or just north of I-70...slightly further
north than previously forecast. Modest low level warm air
advection across the area coupled with ample moisture along and
north of the front should result in overcast skies and on-and-off
showers and storms. South of the front, we're likely to see more
breaks in the clouds, allowing for MLCAPE to build to 1000-2000
j/kg, though weaker forcing will limit shower and storm activity
within the warm sector. The best chance for strong to severe
storms will be along and just south of the front where modest
forcing along the front overlaps with the northern fringes of the
best instability. Fortunately, deep layer bulk shear will top out
around 25kts, so there is only a marginal risk for severe storms,
with large hail as the primary threat.
.LONG TERM... (Wednesday through Monday)
Issued at 334 AM CDT Tue May 7 2019
Several shortwaves will eject out of a deep, nearly stationary
trough over the western CONUS through Thursday. This will cause a
strong surface cyclone to move from SE KS on Wednesday
morning...to eastern KS on Wednesday evening...to NE MO by
Thursday morning. Strong return flow ahead of the low on Wednesday
should help shunt the surface front well north of the CWA while
pulling fairly robust low level moisture into central MO. The
first of the shortwaves will pass the Mid-Mississippi valley on
Wednesday afternoon, which coupled with warm, moist advection in
the low levels, will likely result in showers and storms.
Questions remain with regards to storm intensity on Wednesday
afternoon. With the front further north than previously forecast,
cloud/precip coverage my be limited enough to allow instability
to recover prior to the onset of shower and storm activity.
However, this recovery is far from certain, and deep layer bulk
shear values from 35-40 kts are only marginally supportive for
severe storms. SPC's slight risk across much of eastern MO with a
marginal risk across the rest of the CWA seems appropriate given
forecast uncertainty.
Warm moist advection will continue through Wednesday night and
into Thursday as the surface low approaches the region. Mixed
layer and surface based instability will obviously become limited
overnight, but guidance in good agreement showing a plume of
MLCAPE in excess of 500 J/kg spreading into the CWA. This elevated
instability coupled with increasing shear as the low approaches
the area will support a continued chance for strong to possibly
severe storms overnight.
By 18z Thursday, MLCAPE values are progged to approach 1000-2000
J/kg, though ongoing precip/low level cloud coverage may limit
instability. However, mid-level lapse rates are progged to approach
7 C/km, so even if MLCAPE is less than forecast, we should still
have some MUCAPE to work with. This instability, along with bulk
shear values around 40 kts and the forcing provided by the front,
supports at least some chance for strong to severe storms on
Thursday afternoon, especially east of the Mississippi where
instability will have more time to recover.
Beyond Thursday, we'll remain stuck between a deep trough across
the SW CONUS and a few waves tracking across the northern tier of
the CONUS. This will leave our region on the fringes of any
weather-makers, and beneath high pressure more often than not.
Accordingly, we'll see a few periods with low chances for showers
and storms, but we'll be mostly dry. Cool temperatures behind
Thursday's front will moderate to near normal by the end of the
weekend.

.AVIATION... (For the 12z TAFs through 12z Wednesday Morning)

A weak cold front has draped itself across the region, currently
extending from roughly Springfield, IL to Columbia, MO. North of
the front, winds have become quite light, allowing for patchy
dense fog and very low cigs to develop. Patchy LIFR conditions
will likely linger in these locations for the next few hours
before daytime mixing dissipates the fog and nudges the cigs to
IFR.
The previously mentioned cold front will eventually stall out
roughly along I-70. North of the front, overcast skies are likely
to linger, with MVFR or IFR conditions expected to linger into the
afternoon. Along and south of the front, overcast to broken VFR
cigs are expected to prevail. However, this front will likely
serve as a focus for isolated to scattered showers and storms
later this afternoon before it begins pushing north this evening.
Given the expected limited coverage of these storms, I've stuck

Major river flooding is expected or ongoing along the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers, as well as the back water points of the Meramec and Cuivre Rivers. Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and evening. There is a marginal risk that a few of these storms could become strong to severe, capable of producing damaging wind gusts. These storms will also be capable of producing heavy rainfall that could produce flash flooding in central MO. Refer to the flash flood watch for details. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday. Additional rounds of storms are possible through Thursday. Heavy rainfall will be likely over central Missouri where a flash flood watch remains in effect through Wednesday night.
