.SYNOPSIS...16/633 PM.
An upper trough crossing the area will bring a cooler temperatures
to the region Thursday through Saturday. Gusty northerly winds
are expected Thursday through early next week, especially across
Santa Barbara and Los Angeles Counties. The strongest winds will
be Thursday night into early Friday, and Saturday night into
Sunday.

***UPDATE***
A rather quiet night in progress across Southwest California,
aside from gusty northerly winds across the western Santa Barbara
South Coast where winds are gusting to 30 mph through passes and
canyons west of Goleta. Any upper level trough is moving toward
the coast, shifting surface pressure gradients to onshore. At the
same time, the NAM model shows a coastal eddy forming near
Catalina Island, pushing low clouds onshore over the L.A Basin
later tonight. The low clouds are expected to continue northwest
along the coast, covering portions of the Oxnard Plain, but the
SBA South Coast should remain clear thanks to the northerly wind
push. Low clouds also expected to move onshore over the Central
Coast, with only locally dense fog as the layer deepens.
Otherwise, looking ahead to an extended period of windy conditions
between Thursday and Monday or Tuesday of next week.
***From Previous Discussion***
A trough approaching the Pac NW is weakening the offshore
(west/east) flow and that trend will continue into Thursday which
will have several impacts locally. First, it will be considerably
cooler with highs down a good 10-15 degrees. Second, low clouds
will likely fill in along the coastal areas south of SB County.
And lastly, gusty west to southwest winds will develop in the
afternoon and may reach advisory levels in the Antelope Valley.
Following the trough passage Thursday strong northerly flow will
return bringing gusty Sundowner winds to srn SB County and the I5
Corridor, some of which may filter down into the adjacent valleys
and coastal areas including the Central Coast. The northerly flow
will be here for several days, waning slightly Friday into
Saturday but picking up again late Saturday as another trough
passage introduces additional upper air support. The Saturday
evening northerly wind event looks to be the strongest of the two
with 6-7mb northerly gradients from BFL and excellent upper
support. If models continue showing this it will likely be a
warning level wind event for srn SB County and the I5 corridor,
with advisory level winds likely reaching some of the LA/Ventura
valleys, SM Mountains and some of the LA/Ventura coast as well.
Temperatures will warm a few degrees Fri/Sat as gradients turn
offshore (mainly coast/valleys due to downslope effects) but the
upper ridge will still be well to the west over the Pacific Ocean
so the air mass as a whole will be relatively cool.
.LONG TERM (SUN-WED)...16/223 PM.
Offshore flow will continue Sunday through Tuesday while at the
same time the ridge over the Pacific will shift east and park
itself over the west coast. Temps will warm a few more degrees
Sunday then really jump up Mon/Tue into the lower 90s for some
inland coastal areas and mid 90s for some of the valleys. With the
upper ridge right overhead upper support for winds will be
weakening considerably. Still expecting some gusty north to
northeast winds on Sunday, possibly advisory levels in some areas.
Then much weaker Monday and Tuesday.
Light onshore flow returns Wednesday and the ridge weakens as well
so several degrees of cooling expected.

At 0600Z at KLAX, the marine layer was 1000 feet deep. The top of
the inversion was near 2500 feet with a temperature of 23 C.
High confidence in KSMX, KPRB, KWJF and KPMD TAFs.
Low confidence in remainder of TAFs. There is a 30 percent chc low
clouds will not develop where they are forecast (20 percent for
KLAX ans KLGB) and 30 percent chc that low clouds will develop
where they are not forecast. If low clouds do arrive timing could
be off by 2 hours. Low clouds also could last to 21Z.
KLAX...Low confidence in TAF. There is a 20 percent chc of no low
clouds will develop. Arrival time could be 09Z-12Z and burn off
time 17Z-20Z. Any east wind component will remain less than 8
knots.
KBUR....Low to moderate confidence in to 00Z TAF. There is a 30
percent chance of OVC 11Z-17Z.

Outer Waters...High confidence that SCA NW wind gusts and steep
seas will continue through Thursday mid afternoon, and at that
time winds are expected to increase with gale force gusts during
the latter half of the afternoon. A Gale Warning is in effect
from Thursday mid- afternoon through mid- morning Friday for the
entire outer waters. After a brief decrease in winds Friday
morning to SCA level gusts, There is a 50% chance for another
round of Gale force winds Friday night through Sunday.
Inner Waters N of Point Sal...Moderate to high confidence in
SCA level winds tonight through Thursday afternoon through late
Thursday night. There is a 20% chance for local Gale force winds
Thursday evening.
For the inner waters south of Point Conception...SCA NW winds are
expected for the western SBA Channel Thursday afternoon through
late Thursday night, and N winds are expected to increase to 20 to
30 knots over the western portion of PZZ655 late Thursday night.
Winds will increase over the SBA Channel again over the weekend.
For the Santa Monica Bay...There is a 50% chance of northerly SCA
level gusts late Thursday evening through Friday mid morning.
Winds will then shift to the south near shore east of Malibu and
under SCA level thresholds by late morning into the afternoon.
Hazardous short period seas are expected across all of the waters
during much of the forecast period due to strong winds and large,
steep seas, combined with a long period NW swell.

.BEACHES...16/826 PM.
A northwest swell will begin to move into the waters tonight,
increasing through the day Thursday with High Surf expected along
the Central Coast by Thursday evening. The surf will build to 10
to 12 feet on west to northwest facing beaches Thursday night,
peaking with sets to 15 feet by late Friday morning through Friday
evening, and then will gradually subside through Saturday morning.
There is a chance that the surf will remain near or above the high
surf threshold of 10 feet through Saturday evening.
South of Point Conception, the steep angle of the swell means that
less of the energy will make it to shore. However, the west facing
Ventura beaches could see surf up to 5 or 6 feet Friday.
