.Another surge of gusty Santa Ana winds is occurring this 
morning, with gusts between 35 and 50 mph across wind prone 
coastal and valley areas of Ventura and Los Angeles counties, and 
50 to 60 mph across the mountains. These gusty winds combined with
widespread single digit humidities (as low as 1 percent) and 
warmer temperatures will continue to bring very dangerous fire 
weather conditions today. The Santa Ana winds are gradually 
expected to diminish by mid and late afternoon. By tonight and 
Saturday morning, northeast winds are expected to be gusting 
between 20 and 30 mph across the wind prone mountains and valleys 
of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, then switch to onshore on 
Saturday afternoon. With the continuation of widespread single 
digit humidities and warm temperatures, these gusty winds have 
prompted the extension of the Red Flag Warning for the Los Angeles
and Ventura County mountains, Santa Clarita Valley, Ventura

.SYNOPSIS...08/827 AM.

Cooler afternoon temperatures are expected today, especially in
coastal regions experiencing morning clouds. Expect night to
morning coastal clouds into Wednesday, and below normal
temperatures by the afternoon. A Santa Ana wind event will
develop Thursday and continue through Saturday with warm, very
dry, and windy conditions expected.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-THU)...08/943 AM.

Another morning of dense fog along the coast and today it included
areas north of Pt Conception as well. Onshore trends again today
and local profilers are showing 2-5 degrees of cooling in the
boundary layer. So a cooler day on tap most areas.

Forecast still on track for a strong Santa Ana event Thu/Fri. Will
likely be issuing a high wind watch this afternoon covering the LA
Mountains, including the Santa Monicas. Most other areas should be
in the advisory category but isolated locations within those areas
will spike into the warning category, including the Wiley Ridge
area in central Ventura County, the eastern portion of Simi
Valley near Santa Susana Pass, and possibly even the eastern
portion of the Oxnard Plain near Camarillo and the Conejo Grade.
Looking at past events this meteorological pattern has similar
parameters to what we saw back in 2007 on Oct 21-23 but with not
as much of a preceding northerly event.

***From previous discussion***

The trof moves into Great Basin area on Wednesday. There will be
strong onshore trends. The stronger onshore flow along with a weak
eddy should bring better marine layer stratus coverage to the
coasts and into the lower vlys. The strong onshore push to the
east will produce strong west winds in the mtns and esp in the
Antelope Vly. Hgts drop down to 576 DM. Max temps will drop 5 to
10 degrees from todays values and almost all areas will have below
normal temps.

All eyes on Thursday as the first strong Santa Ana of the season
will arrive.

Wednesday's trof will slowly move to the east and the northerly
flow behind it will advect plenty of cold Canadian air into the
Great Basin. Strong SFC high pressure will develop here. The NAM
forecasts a -7.7 mb offshore gradient developing by 12Z with an
even more impressive -10.7 MB offshore trend. These impressive
gradients will combine with cold air advection coming off of the
deserts to produce very strong winds strong wind advisory (gusts
to 55 mph) for sure and warning levels (60+ mph gusts) quite
possible for most of LA and VTA counties. Due to the amount of
cold air advection the Antelope Vly may see advisory level
easterly winds. Look for the possibility of a high wind watch
issued with the afternoon forecasts.

So much cold air advection will take place on Thursday that it
will thwart any adiabatic warm up. There will be a great deal of
cooling in the interior and slight cooling in the vlys. The coasts
are the only areas that will see a little warming. Max temps in
the Antelope vly will be about 10 degrees below normal and may
struggle to reach 70 degrees.

.LONG TERM (FRI-MON)...08/340 AM.

Clear skies and a cold and dry airmass along will combine early
Friday morning to produce very cold temps in the wind sheltered
areas. The Antelope Vly will see the coldest non mtn temps with
lows falling into the upper 20s. Several min temperature records
could fall. A freeze watch will be issued later today for this
early season freeze.

GFS and its ensembles continue to forecast a big decrease in the
winds while the EC and most of its ensemble members continue to
support offshore winds just a little weaker than on Thursday. The
EC has been a little more consistent and is more climatologically
correct as well. Will bias the forecast to the windier EC. The
cold air advection will be greatly reduced and this will allow for
a nice warm up across all of the coasts and vlys save perhaps for
the SBA south coast.

Still a little breezy on Saturday but likely slightly below
advisory levels. The cold air mass will moderate some and this
will bring warming to the interior. An earlier sea breeze will
knock a few degrees off of the coastal temps.

The EC and the GFS are not in the best of agreement for Sun and
Mon. But whatever forecast come true it will be dry with slight
cooling each day.

.AVIATION...08/1739Z.

At 1549Z at KLAX, the marine layer was 1300 feet deep. The top of
the inversion was near 2600 feet with a temperature of 22 C.

For tonight, expect low clouds to push into the Central Coast
this evening, and most other coastal TAF sites by or just after
midnight. Conds are expected to be IFR, except LIFR to VLIFR on
the Central Coast. Conditions on the south coast should improve to
MVFR early Wednesday morning. In fact, marine clouds are expected
to spread into the valley TAF sites in the San Fernando Valley.

KLAX...Moderate confidence in 18Z TAF. There is a 20-30% chance
that cigs tonight will arrive as early as 06Z. There is a 30%
chance that cigs tonight/Wed morning will be in the MVFR category.
There is a 20-30% chance that east winds will reach 8 knots
between 12Z and 17Z Wed.

KBUR...Moderate confidence in 18z TAF. There is a 30 percent
chance of marine clouds arriving sooner than forecast.

.MARINE...08/923 AM.

Moderate confidence in the current forecast.

Winds and seas are expected to remain below Small Craft Advisory
(SCA) levels across the waters through this afternoon.

Two surges of strong gusty winds are expected in the next 48
hours. The first surge out of the north to northwest will commence
tonight. This will be followed by another surge of strong northeat
winds Thursday morning through Friday, mainly across the southern
inner waters out to Catalina Island.

SCA level NW winds will likely develop across the northern outer
waters zones (PZZ670, PZZ673) this evening, then spread southward
to near San Nicolas Island overnight. SCA level NW winds will
continue across the outer waters through late Wednesday night. or
possibly early Thurday. There is a 30% chance of Gale force winds
Wednesday afternoon and evening across the waters north and west
of Pt. Conception.

Nearshore north of Pt. Sal, SCA level NW winds are likely Wed
afternoon into Wed night.

Across SBA Channel and southern inner waters, winds and seas will
remain below SCA levels through Wed morning. There is a 30%
percent chance of SCA level W to NW winds late Wed afternoon and
evening across the western portion of the SBA Channel. SCA level
NE winds are likely across eastern portions of the SBA Channel and
portions of the southern inner waters at times Thu through Fri
morning. Winds will likely be strongest from near Ventura Harbor
to Anacapa Island, from Point Mugu to Santa Monica, and
through the San Pedro Channel to Catalina Island.

.FIRE WEATHER...08/925 AM.

High confidence in a moderate to strong Santa Ana wind event
Thursday through Friday. The winds will be focused over Los Angeles
and Ventura Counties, and will peak Thursday afternoon and evening
with gusts between 45 and 70 mph. The winds should weaken Thursday
night and Friday, but only by 5 to 10 mph meaning the winds will
remain gusty. Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties will also
see offshore winds, but with peak east to southeast gusts in the 15
to 35 mph range. Humidities will start off high over the coasts and
valleys Thursday morning with some marine layer influence, but high
confidence in widespread single-digit humidities by Thursday
afternoon. These very dry conditions will last through Saturday, and
possibly through Sunday or Monday. Mild temperatures expected on
Thursday, with highs generally in the mid 70s to mid 80s in the
coasts and valleys. As a result, widespread critical fire weather
conditions are certain for Los Angeles and Ventura Counties and Fire
Weather Watch is in effect. This watch will likely be converted to a
Red Flag Warning this afternoon. Over San Luis Obispo and Santa
Barbara Counties, elevated to briefly critical conditions are likely
Thursday and Friday.

This is a potentially dangerous situation, with critical weather
and dry fuel conditions. If a fire were to start, the environment
will be favorable for rapid fire spread and extreme behavior. The
public should be urged to use extreme caution with any potential
fire ignition sources. Past fires have begun from things like
discarded cigarettes, metallic hedge trimmers, welding activities,
and campfires.

A moderate to strong Santa Ana wind event is expected Thursday
through Saturday with 70 mph gust possible. Critical fire weather
conditions are likely across a large portion of Ventura and Los
Angeles counties. There will be elevated fire weather conditions
across Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. In addition,
sub-freezing early morning temperatures are possible across the
Antelope Valley and other wind protected inland locations.
