.SYNOPSIS...04/738 AM.

Another cold front is moving through today and bringing more rain
to the area. A colder but drier system will bring light to
moderate rain and lowering snow levels Tuesday and into early
Wednesday morning. It will then be dry through Friday.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-WED)...04/948 AM.

Cold front moving through the forecast area this morning has
generated rainfall rates between 0.25 and 0.50 inches per hour
across SBA and Ventura counties. Embedded within the main cold
front are some convective rain bursts lasting 5 to 10 minutes
that have been fairly intense. For example, a rain gauge at
Channel Islands Harbor reported 0.17 inches of rain in 4 minutes.
As of 940 am, the rain band associated with the cold front is
moving across eastern Ventura county and extreme Western Los
Angeles County, including the western portion of the Woolsey burn
area. As the front pushes eastward across Los Angeles county
today, rainfall rates could locally increase to 0.75 inches per
hour across the San Gabriel mountains and adjacent foothills due
to favorable upslope conditions. Flood advisories are in effect
for Ventura and Los Angeles counties this morning, and a Flash
Flood Warning has recently been issued for the Woolsey Burn Area
where some brief heavy downpours have been observed on radar
and rain gauges. Behind the cold front, instability showers will
persist today across the region, with radar showing some brief
heavy rain bursts across SLO/SBA counties. With the colder air
aloft moving into the region, there could also be some small hail.

Snow levels today will generally range between 4500 and 5500
feet, and are expected to lower rapidly  to between 2500 and 3500
feet by Tuesday morning. The forecast attention will turn to these
lower snow levels which could impact many of the low elevation
passes on Tuesday, including Interstate 5 near the Grapevine,
Highway 14 through Soledad Canyon, and Highway 33 north of Ojai.
Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for the mountains of Los
Angeles and Ventura counties through early Wednesday morning, with
significant snows expected at resort levels. Dangerous winter
weather driving conditions today across the San Gabriel mountains
due to the heavy snow expected along with gusty south to southwest
winds up to 50 mph. Gusty southwest winds up to 50 mph will also
impact the Antelope Valley today.

*** From previous discussion ***

Mountain locations in Los Angeles County could receive another
one to two feet of snow with 9 to 18 inches falling in Ventura
County and lesser amounts in Santa Barbara and SLO County
mountains. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Los Angeles
and Ventura County mountains through early Wednesday.

The cold upper low currently near the Pac NW will slide into the
state on Tuesday. It will bring more showers to the area as well
as the very low snow levels. This system will not have that much
moisture to work with and rainfall totals will be much less
generally around a quarter inch.

Dry northerly flow moves in behind the exiting trof on Wednesday.
Skies will turn partly cloudy.

Hgts are well below normal and abnormally low on Tuesday. 552 DM
hgts today drop to 544 DM Tuesday. On Tuesday evening the 539 DM
hgt line brushes the northern tip of LA county. On Wednesday hgts
rebound to 555 DM.

Max temps across the csts and vlys will struggle to reach 60 all
three days but Tuesday will be coldest with max temps 14 to 18
degrees below normal.

.LONG TERM (THU-SUN)...04/417 AM.

Thursday will be the nicest day of the next 7 as a little pop up
ridge moves into the state. Hgts only climb to 561 DM. Max temps
will warm into the lower 60s (still 4 to 8 degrees blo normal)
under sunny skies.

Both the EC and GFS quickly scoot the ridge out to the east and
move a trof close to the coast. The EC is a little faster than the
GFS and brings rain to the Central Coast by Friday evening. It's a
good bet that skies will turn partly to mostly cloudy. South flow
ahead the trof will provide enough warming to counteract the cloud
cover and max temps will be similar to Thursday.

Both GFS and EC agree that some sort of trof will sweep through
the state on Saturday. Right now have just a chc of rain in the
forecast as the mdls have not been that consistent up to this
point but if there is one more day of agreement pops will need to
be upped. This looks like a pretty run of the mill storm with no
real hazards.

Dry NW flow sets up next Sunday and it looks like it will be a
fairly nice day albeit with cooler than normal temps.

.AVIATION...04/1816Z.

At 18Z at KLAX...there was no marine layer nor a sfc based
inversion, but there was a moist layer through 15000 feet.

Low confidence in all TAFs. cigs and visibilities will vary
widely and frequently over the next 24 hours. Conds will become
mostly low MVFR to high IFR with occasional LIFR conds. Periods
of rain will linger through the day with another uptick during the
late night through early morning Tue period. There may be some
improvement this evening. Gusty south winds will affect many area
this morning, with winds shifting to SW to W by this afternoon.

LAX...Low confidence in the 18Z TAF. Scattered showers will
continue this morning, then become steady rain by late morning
through early this afternoon, before turning to showers again.
Conds are expected to improve to VFR tonight, though there is a
40% chance that cigs will remain MVFR. Another uptick in shower
activity is possible Tue morning. Good confidence in southerly
cross winds of 15 to 25 knots late this morning, becoming
southwest by 19-20Z.
KBUR....Low confidence in the 12Z TAF. Scattered showers will
continue this morning, then become steady rain by late morning
through early this afternoon, before turning to showers again.
Conds are expected to improve to VFR tonight, though there is a
40% chance that cigs will remain MVFR. Another uptick in shower
activity is possible Tue morning.

for the outer waters through early Wednesday morning as well as
the southern portion of the inner waters (PZZ655) from Point Mugu
to San Mateo Point. Widespread short period wind swell will also
impact most of the area, especially over the inner waters.

.BEACHES...04/1020 AM.

N of Point Conception...High Surf Advisory will continue through
11 AM this morning. Expect surf 9 to 12 feet to lower to around 7
to 9 feet by this afternoon. Surf is expected to increase once
again by Tuesday to around 12 to 16 feet. Another High Surf
Advisory will likely be needed starting Tuesday and continue
through at least Tuesday night.

S of Point Conception...Expect high surf between 5 to 8 feet this
morning before lowering to around 3 to 6 feet this afternoon.
Confidence is not high that another High Surf Advisory will be
needed for the exposed west facing beaches for L.A. and Ventura
Counties as surf should increase to between 4 to 7 feet. Chances
are a Hazardous Beach Statement would be needed for Tuesday
through Tuesday night. Later shifts could make that decision.

There will continue to be a high risk for rip currents through
Tuesday night. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't
swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following
the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or
wave for help. There will continue to be dangerous conditions into
Wednesday.

At 637 AM PST, Doppler radar was tracking a a couple of rotating
storms in the Santa Barbara Channel that will bring brief periods of
heavy rain, small hail, and the possibility of funnel clouds or weak
tornados between Refugio State Beach and Goleta.

Half inch hail and wind gusts up to 50 mph will be possible with this
storm.
