Life threatening waves and currents are expected at the beaches.
People visiting the beaches should stay out of the water.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in
sandbars. Rip currents can sweep you into deeper water.

Structural currents form along piers where longshore currents and
wave action flow into the structure. Structural currents can
sweep you into deeper water along the pier structure.

Exposed beaches are more likely to experience the most
significant wave and current impacts. Impacts at beaches with
protective breakwalls or jetties will be subject to the

Through Thursday...

Our next weather-maker--a fairly sharp shortwave trough--is
currently translating eastward across Iowa and Missouri with an
associated vort max/PV anomaly analyzed across north central Iowa.
Increasing southwesterly flow ahead of this feature is resulting
in an uptick in low-level warm advection/isentropic upglide across
the Upper Midwest early this morning along the eastern flanks of
this incoming system. Precipitation chances will be on a gradual
increase through the morning hours today, although it does appear
as if any appreciable PoPs will hold off until later this
afternoon and evening for locales along and east of I-57.

Winds pose a pretty big challenge today, as an undular
bore/gravity wave is already making an appearance on radars across
northern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin. This feature should
continue to press southward along the lake and may end up
allowing some form of composite lake breeze/outflow to push inland
later this morning and afternoon. With this in mind, there's a
pretty big temperature bust potential for the lakeshore areas, and
have trended high temperatures down a bit for portions of Lake
(IL) and Cook counties as a result.

Forcing for ascent will continue to gradually increase through the
morning and into the afternoon hours with the approach of the main
vort lobe. Instability is forecast to rise enough to support
somewhat more widespread development of thunderstorms compared to
the last event through the afternoon. The gridded forecast will
reflect very high PoPs area-wide from this afternoon and into the
early-evening hours given the magnitude of ascent/forcing. While
overall atmospheric moisture content isn't overly high with this
system (PWATs generally around one inch), the slow-moving nature
of this system, combined with cloud-bearing flow orienting nearly
parallel with the incoming cold front portends some potential for
slow-moving and training convection this afternoon and evening.
Given the cellular nature of any potential heavier downpours
today, think the potential for widespread flash flooding remains
too low to warrant a Flash Flood Watch, but wouldn't be surprised
to see some isolated rainfall totals pushing north of 2 inches by
late this evening as precipitation begins to wind down. This may
lead to localized instances of flooding (perhaps even flash
flooding given sustained rates).

In addition to the locally heavy rainfall threat, some of the
stronger thunderstorms will be capable of producing some small
hail (and also some brief gusty winds to 40-45 mph) from late
this morning through the mid-afternoon hours as we'll be holding
onto modest mid-level flow. Don't expect any severe weather,
however, and we'll be steadily losing the more appreciable flow
through the afternoon hours as the core of the trough axis
approaches the region.

We've slowed the progression of the system down a bit from the
previous forecast, and think that rain chances may remain elevated
east of I-55/57 through about midnight or so before things begin
to taper off. Have also added in some low PoPs Thursday
morning/afternoon downwind of the lake as forecast soundings
indicate we'll mix into some lingering moisture with sufficient
instability for some isolated to scattered showers during peak
heating.

Finally, winds will become strong and gusty tonight and into
Thursday with the passage of the surface cold front. Latest
guidance supports occasional wind gusts pushing to around 30-35
mph for a period Thursday morning, and could be even a bit
stronger immediately downwind of the lake across parts of Lake
(IN) and Porter counties.

.LONG TERM...
333 AM CDT

Thursday night through Tuesday...

More quiescent weather conditions are expected to overspread the
region Thursday night and into Friday as shortwave ridging and
surface high pressure begins to build overhead. Can't rule out a
few showers scraping the Illinois/Wisconsin border on Friday as
broad warm advection returns, but think the chances for measurable
precipitation across our CWA will generally remain under 15
percent.

Still a good deal of uncertainty regarding the forecast evolution
for this weekend and into early next week. Broad cyclonic mid-
level flow will persist through this period and southwesterly
low-level flow will also be returning the region. This should
allow moisture and instability to increase across parts of the
area, although there is some question about the placement of a
potential baroclinic zone which may set up nearby and locally
modulate the potential for organized convection.

With a belt of stronger mid-level flow overhead (in the 40-45 kt
range) and with the potential for MLCAPE values to diurnally build
above 1000 J/kg this weekend, it would appear that at least some
conditional threat for organized strong to severe convection
remains although, again, where this potential focuses will be
highly dependent on the location of the aforementioned cold front.
In addition, the GFS has consistently indicated the potential for
a heavier rainfall threat across portions of the region, mainly
near and south of I-88 this weekend with the approach of another
shortwave. Thankfully, this system appears to be pretty transient
and quick-moving, but we'll need to keep a close eye on this
potential over the next few days as frontal forcing, high
atmospheric moisture content, and respectable low-level flow may
favorably coincide.

Additional subtle disturbances may continue to zip through the
mid-level flow into the middle of next week. This warrants keeping
at least low-grade PoPs chances riding through the rest of the
forecast period as a result.

For the 06Z TAFs...

VFR and dry conditions in place early this morning, with any
showery development still to the west of the terminals. This will
likely continue for several more hours early this morning, but
with precip on the increase across the RFD area. This will
initially be on the lighter side but coverage and intensity will
be on the increase through mid morning, along with thunder
chances. Have maintained similar trends in the forecast, keeping a
VCTS in place today for likely embedded thunder. Will need to
monitor the possibility for thunder slightly longer this afternoon
into the evening. Precip should remain in place this evening, but
anticipate thunder chances to lower. VFR ceilings will lower
later this afternoon into the evening, with low end MVFR becoming
likely this evening. IFR will still be possible this evening, but
if it does occur, think this will be a small period. Winds will be
a challenge later this afternoon into this evening, given
thunderstorms possibility creating outflow and varying wind
direction, lake breeze development, and then a front rapidly
approaching later this evening. Will continue to monitor trends,
but could see changes to the current wind forecast occurring with
later updates.

A strong push of northerly winds is expected with a cold front
late this evening and into Thursday. Confidence has increased in
the potential for strong wind gusts to warrant hoisting a Gale
Watch for the Indiana nearshore waters late tonight and through
Thursday afternoon. We'll also hoist a Small Craft Advisory for
the Illinois nearshore where confidence in gale force gusts is a
bit lower. We'll note, however, that latest guidance continues to
suggest a potential for stronger wind gusts across the Illinois
near shore waters with the frontal passage tonight, and a
conversion of the Small Craft Advisory to a Gale Warning is not
out of the question. Conditions should begin to improve pretty
quickly late Thursday afternoon and into the early-evening hours
as winds abate.
