Through Sunday...

The active weather continues and looks to do so through the middle
of the upcoming week as the area remains on the periphery of a
ridge of high pressure over the lower Mississippi Rover Valley and
southeast U.S. and a deep upper trough slowly but steadily digs
into the western U.S. Rain and embedded thunderstorms continue
across much of the area this morning as a cold front settles
southward. Low/mid level moisture transport is starting to lose
focus over the area and will continue to do so through the
morning. Still have several shortwaves that will cross the area
through the morning but overall expect to see a decrease in the
coverage of rain/thunder through mid or late morning, with the
northern extent shifting southward as well. Will trend pops
downward through late morning but keep low chance pops for areas
along and south of I-80 for the afternoon as they will remain in
closer proximity to the front but this may be a little
pessimistic. With breezy northeast winds across the area, highs
will only range from the low to mid 60s for most areas and the low
to mid 70s closer to the front near and south of U.S. 24. With a
steady northeast wind across the lake, large waves will be churned
up so will issue a beach hazards statement for all lakeshore
counties and a lakeshore flood advisory for the Illinois shoreline
where a better fetch will build higher waves. With the extremely
high lake levels and onshore waves, it will be a dangerous day at
the lake shore and along many piers/breakwalls.

Water vapor shows another organized upper trough moving across the
Texas panhandle and this will cross the area into tonight.
Shortwave ridging ahead of this will help push the mid level
baroclinic zone back to the north with the assistance of a
strengthening low level jet this evening. This should trigger
another round of showers and thunderstorms which will move east-
northeast across the area this evening and tonight. May see some
activity get going very late this afternoon across southwestern
areas as the shortwave energy increases but expect that the better
coverage will hold off until the low level jet and moisture
transport increase later on. Precipitable water values once again
increase to 1.8 to 2 inches tonight but the moisture transport
magnitude and low level jet strength is weaker than what we saw
over the last day as it is better focused west of the area. The
corridor of forcing is more progressive as well so there is less
concern about prolonged training. While most areas will probably
see some rain, am most concerned about areas right along I-80 that
saw the high rainfall amounts Friday/Friday night as this may be
in the area where precip may focus initially before progressing
northward. Guidance doesn’t seem to have a great handle on
precip amounts but could foresee some areas getting between half
and one inch of rain if more intense convection can organize but
will need to better assess today. The surface front begins to move
northward across the area Sunday which will probably keep some
shower/thunder activity around in the morning for most areas but
that should lift north into the afternoon keeping only far
northern areas with a chance for activity. Temps will rebound with
highs around 70 far north and in the lower 80s south with a more
humid airmass returning.

Sunday night through Friday...

The upper flow across the country will be quite a bit more
amplified by Monday with ridging squarely overhead. Monday looks
dry but quite warm and humid, with highs in the lower 80s north to
upper 80s south with a chance to see 90 in a few spots thanks to a
breezy southwest wind. Things get a little more active Monday
night and Tuesday as a series of surface lows track to the
northwest of the area but upper waves may pass close enough to
generate some precip for northern and western areas. The western
trough begins to eject northeast into Wednesday pushing a surface
low across the upper Great Lakes which drags a cold front across
the area Wednesday. This means another round of showers and
thunderstorms in the Wednesday/Thursday time frame. Canadian high
pressure builds in later Thursday bringing a much cooler and more
fall like airmass highs looking to only be in the 60s for the end
of the week.

.AVIATION...
For the 06Z TAFs...

Shower and thunderstorm activity continues at the terminals but
will be on a waning trend over the next several hours in terms of
intensity and coverage. RFD will just be skirted by showers and
some embedded thunder, while ORD/MDW/DPA/GYY remain closer to a
more persistent corridor of activity. Think the bulk of it will
occur over the next several hours with lesser coverage from that
point through daybreak. Variable cigs will continue but should see
a steadier trend toward IFR overnight. A cold front is moving
southward and expect a shift to northerly winds at ORD/DPA over
the next hour or so, with MDW lagging a bit later and GYY a few
hours away from shifting yet.

North to northeast winds will be in place through the day
Saturday. IFR cigs will improve to MVFR and should scatter to
lower end VFR into the afternoon. Another series of disturbances
will cross the region starting mid to late Saturday evening
bringing another round of showers and some embedded thunderstorms.
MVFR cigs also look to return.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of North Central
Illinois...Northeast Illinois and Northwest Indiana.

Weather hazards expected...

  Elevated Thunderstorm Risk...with an associated:
  Elevated hail risk...up to quarter size.
  Limited damaging wind risk...up to 60 mph.
  Significant Flooding Risk.
  High Swim Risk Late Tonight.

DISCUSSION...

The first band of showers and thunderstorms is moving through the
area early this afternoon. Backbuilding storms have developed
along and south of I-80, with the most concentrated area from
Pontiac to Kankakee to Valparaiso. Flash flooding is the highest
concern along this corridor initially. The severe threat is
lower, but some winds to 40 to 45 mph or some small hail is also
possible.

A cold front will bring showers and thunderstorms to the area this
evening. More widespread rainfall is expected, and the concern
for flash flooding may expand a bit farther north toward the
I-80 and I-88 corridor. In addition, some stronger to severe
thunderstorms will be possible mainly later afternoon and evening.

At 1223 AM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along
a line extending from 7 miles southwest of Herscher to 6 miles south
of Piper City to near Fisher. Movement was east at 50 mph.

Wind gusts up to 50 mph will be possible with these storms.

Locations impacted include...
Watseka, Paxton, Stockland, Claytonville, Gilman, Clifton, Onarga,
Milford, Sheldon, Chebanse, Cissna Park, Ashkum, Buckley, Crescent
City, Danforth, Loda, Martinton, Beaverville, Woodland and Donovan.

 I-57 between mile markers 259 and 301.
