Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 148 AM PDT Tue May 28 2019 .SYNOPSIS...Stormy and cool through the week as an unstable spring pattern keeps control of Great Basin weather. Isolated thunderstorms and brief heavy showers will occur over many areas. Temperatures will remain on the cool side with little sun. We might warm up a bit on the weekend into early next week. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday. Strong upper low has moved from Utah-Arizona border to Utah- Colorado border and is moving east. Trough axis extends southwest into southern Nevada-northwest Arizona. Wrap around moisture is streaming into northern Nevada and then plunging south into central Nevada. At this writing (early Tuesday morning)...thunder appears to have taken a break, but moderate showers are still occurring over northeast into central Nevada. The airmass is cool and dewpoints are high...perfect for nighttime...prolonged rain processes. This will continue into Wednesday, though a break may occur Tuesday night-early Wednesday morning, before resuming with a vengeance Wednesday afternoon. Temps will remain near normal to below normal for the period. See Hydrology section for more on potential flooding. .LONG TERM...Wednesday night through next Monday. Medium range progs continue to show a fairly unsettled pattern over northern and central Nevada as an upper level trough remains. Chances for precipitation each afternoon remains high through Saturday as an upper level system is forecast to move from the Pacific Northwest to the south across the middle portions of California by Friday. This will keep the forecast area under a divergent flow aloft with a fairly moist air mass in place. The region will be under the threat for showers and isolated thunderstorms each afternoon and evening, though chances will begin to lower by Sunday and shower coverage looks to be less widespread. In fact, there is some possibility that we could see more then just a peek of sunshine during the day starting Sunday. Winds are expected to remain light during the long term period. Other good news is that we could see a slow warm up to near normal temperatures, with readings in the upper 60s to low 70s by Saturday. Overnight lows each day will be in the 30s and 40s. && .AVIATION...Showers and thunderstorms will continue across NV impacting all terminals. The showers can be heavier at times restricting visibility to MVFR and possibly lower if mist develops. The showers will be accompanied by low clouds that will cause MVFR to IFR conditions. The low clouds with showers will cause mountain obscuration throughout the region. Thunderstorms are expected mainly during the daytime but a few nocturnal storms can occur. The thunderstorms may also be embedded in a field of showers making them less distinct features. Gusty afternoon winds are expected at all terminals with KTPH seeing the strongest winds. && .FIRE WEATHER...Wet. Near normal to slightly cooler than normal temperatures. Isolated to widespread rain showers through Wednesday with isolated thunderstorms in the afternoons and evenings. Temperatures will warm up a bit later in the week. Several creeks and rivers are running high and even flooding in spots. Low spots around the region are wet to muddy. Some will become impassable after brief heavy showers. Drying will be slow. && .HYDROLOGY...Recent heavy rains have necessitated flood warnings or advisories on several creeks and rivers in the region. The Humboldt River is rising at Battle Mountain and Comus. Upstream...tributaries are generally running high, some exceeding action stage or even approaching minor flood stage. Recent rains have also caused ponding or minor lowland flooding. Soils in many areas are nearly saturated.
