Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service North Platte NE 1109 AM CST Fri Nov 29 2019 .SHORT TERM...(Today through Saturday) Issued at 430 AM CST Fri Nov 29 2019 Active weather will continue across the region through Saturday. Freezing drizzle and freezing fog will continue through this morning leading to a light glaze on area roadways and trees. Minor travel concerns are possible as untreated roadways could become slippery. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for this freezing drizzle until 15Z. The next major winter system will impact the area on Friday night and Saturday. This strong low pressure system will bring rain, snow, and strong winds to much of north central and western Nebraska. Warmer temperatures will surge in ahead of a cold front with precipitation becoming either drizzle or light rain. The warmest temperatures at some locations today may even occur after sunset Friday night. As the cold front tracks across the region and colder air filters in behind, precipitation will begin to become a rain/snow mixture and eventually all snow by 6AM CST Saturday. Snow will be heaviest across the north (generally north of Highway 2). Here, snow will taper from near 11 inches across northern Sheridan county to an inch along a line from Oshkosh to Bartlett. For points south of this line, expect under an inch of snow accumulation. In addition to snow accumulations, this system will also bring the potential for extremely strong winds. As the low develops and strengthens over Nebraska, the pressure gradient will tighten resulting in strong surface winds. The strongest winds will likely be between 9am CST and 6pm CST. During this timeframe, gusts up to 55 to 65 mph could be seen across southwest Nebraska. Strong winds will add an additional concern across northern Nebraska where several inches of snow are expected. Blowing and drifting snow as well as visibility reductions are anticipated on Saturday. If traveling, expect snow covered and slippery roadways. Important changes to headlines have occurred during this forecast package. Have gone ahead and issued a high wind warning for locations that are expected to see gusts up to 55 mph, but not expected to get much snow (generally across southwest Nebraska). For locations across the north, have issued a blizzard warning as blowing snow and winds up to 60mph are expected to drop visibility to 1/4 mile or less. Please see the latest headline products for additional information. Some concerns with the forecast include the potential to get more snow further south which could mean additional counties may need to be added to the blizzard warning in the future. It's important to note that there is no snowfall requirement for blizzard warnings. Knowing this, even points south of that Oshkosh to Bartlett line that will only see up to an inch of snow could potentially reach blizzard criteria. Will need to reevaluate this over the next forecast cycle and adjust as necessary. .LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Thursday) Issued at 430 AM CST Fri Nov 29 2019 Gusty winds will slowly diminish throughout Saturday evening as the low pressure system pushes off to the northeast and the pressure gradient loosens. Gusts up to 40 to 50 mph could still be seen across much of the region before gusts diminish altogether. Precipitation will also continue through Saturday evening and into Sunday morning across the north. Light additional snowfall is expected (near 1 inch). Blowing snow will remain a concern through Saturday night before winds decrease on Sunday. Quieter weather returns on Sunday as high pressure builds into the central Plains. This high will bring pleasant weather to north central Nebraska through next week. A quick moving shortwave moving off the Rockies will result in precipitation Thursday moving across northern Kansas. For now, will keep precipitation out of our area. This may have to be adjusted over the next several days as models get a better handle on this shortwave. For temperatures, despite recent snow pack, highs will return into the low to mid 40s across the north by the middle of next week. Highs are expected to reach the low 50s south of I-80. Low temperatures will start off cold in the Dry weather and cooler temperatures return for the end of next week with highs dropping back into low 40s. Overnight lows will start off cold in the mid teens for Saturday and Sunday nights before rising back into the 20s for the remainder of the week. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Saturday afternoon) Issued at 1107 AM CST Fri Nov 29 2019 IFR and low IFR is expected to persist across all of western and north central Nebraska through today and into tonight.
