.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday night)
Issued at 349 PM CDT Tue Mar 12 2019

Upper level low pressure is currently located across Arizona per
water vapor imagery. Meanwhile a long wave trough was advancing
eastward across western Canada and the Pacific northwest. As the
longwave trough translates southeast into the central and northern
Rockies, the upper level low across AZ will be pulled ahead of it
into far western KS/eastern Colorado by midday Wednesday. Surface
low pressure will be in the process of rapidly deepening across
western KS during this time, with the ECMWF and GFS projecting a
very deep (nearing 970 MB) low pressure center by early Wednesday
afternoon. The upper low and long wave trough essentially merge
Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night...resulting in a very
dynamic mid latitude cyclone.

Warm air advection will ramp up this evening with mid-level
instability developing across most of western Nebraska. This will
result in showers/thunderstorms this evening and overnight. These
will eventually form into a deformation zone/band late tonight
through Wednesday across portions of northwest Nebraska and the
panhandle. This is where freeing rain early Wednesday morning
will change to heavy snow. The heavy snow coupled with very strong
north winds will result in blizzard conditions through the day
Wednesday, and have a blizzard warning posted for these areas.

Across portions of north central, central and southwest Nebraska, a
Winter Storm Watch will be maintained where confidence in
snow/blowing snow is less. Models though are converging on a
solution. As the system occludes across northwest KS Wednesday
afternoon, thunderstorms should develop across portions of north
central Kansas into southern and southwest Nebraska. These should
merge and form a new deformation zone across portions of north
central, central into southwest Nebraska. It is unknown at this
time exactly where the axis of heaviest snow will be with this
band, but models seem to be converging on the placement near or
just east of Highway 83 from Thedford to North Platte to Curtis by
around 6pm CDT. This will then slowly track eastward towards the
O'Neill and Broken Bow areas Wednesday evening. Heavy snow could
materialize along with blowing snow and have replaced the High
Wind Watch with a Winter Storm Watch to account for the increasing
snow/blowing snow potential. Strong winds (gusts in excess of 55
mph) are likely to continue through all of Wednesday night

The other aspect of this system will be the potential for locally
heavy rainfall totals across portions of central, southwest and north
central Nebraska. Lingering snow cover and a fairly significant
frost depth/frozen ground could lead to local ponding of water.

This system has the potential to be one of the stronger storms in
the last 10 years or so - with very deep surface low pressure and
abundant moisture resulting in very strong winds and heavy
precipitation. Please monitor the latest forecast information.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)
Issued at 349 PM CDT Tue Mar 12 2019

In the wake of the strong trough moving through, northerly winds
will begin moving drier air in place which will help to shutdown
precipitation quickly by midday Thursday for areas west of Highway
83. Precipitation may linger into the early afternoon for areas east
of Highway 83 but any additional snow is likely to be light. Winds
will remain quite strong through the afternoon but as the main core
of mid-level winds shifts east, winds will be quick to diminish that
evening to less than 30 mph by early Friday. Strong CAA during the
daytime will limit high temperatures to the upper 20s across the
Sandhills to mid 30s in portions of the southwest through north
central Nebraska. Height rises in the northwesterly flow will keep
Friday quiet. A few weak pulses caught in the flow will encounter
rather dry air and aren't expected to lead to any precipitation
chances. A dry weekend is expected as any energy will largely remain
to the north and east in the upper Midwest. Highs should climb into
the mid 30s in the north to low 50s in the south both Saturday and
Sunday, which continues to be below normal values for mid-March. Our
next chance at precipitation looks to arrive in the Monday/Tuesday
time frame as a stronger clipper like system moves out of southeast
MT into Nebraska. Model discrepancies regarding timing and placement
exist with the ECMWF more optimistic for Nebraska's chances at
rain/snow due to a further southwest placement with the main trough
axis. For now will not make any adjustments to the forecast during
this period, but will need to watch this monitor this system for
additional rain/snow chances.

Multiple aviation hazards the next 24 hrs. Tonight, fog and
rain showers with isolated-scattered thunderstorms (mainly over
southwest NEB-Sandhills-north central NEB) are the initial
concern. Current there is locally dense fog also based on cams
and surface observations. Precipitation will change over gradually
to freezing precip/mix before all snow over time across
far northwestern NEB late tonight-early morning. Thereafter
precipitation will change over to mix/freezing rain to snow
gradually south and east tomorrow across west central NEB,
staying rain across roughly the southeast half of the forecast
area (including the KLBF terminal). Of which, isolated
thunderstorms will also be possible again across parts of
southwest NEB to south central and central NEB late tomorrow.
Precipitation will then change to snow across the remainder of the
area through early tomorrow night. Meanwhile, strong northerly
winds will develop in the afternoon and winds will then continue
to increase through the evening area-wide. Gusts will be strongest
in the afternoon and evening across western NE. Of which, gusts

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of western and
north central Nebraska.

.DAY ONE...TONIGHT.

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible tonight, mainly
in the evening, across portions of southwest NEB into central
Nebraska. No severe weather is expected.

A Flood Watch is in effect tonight with rain and thunderstorms
expected for parts of southwest Nebraska, the Sandhills and north
central Nebraska. Please refer to the Flood Watch message for
more information.

Areas of fog tonight will lower visibilities to 1 mile or less at
times.

Freezing rain is likely to develop across the northwestern
Sandhills into portions of the northern Panhandle. Ice
accumulations of up to two tenths of an inch are possible.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY.

A Flood Watch remains in effect Wednesday with rain and
thunderstorms expected at times for parts of southwest Nebraska,
the Sandhills and north central Nebraska. Please refer to the
Flood Watch message for more information.

Light freezing rain will transition to snow and move south and
east across the area Wednesday afternoon into the evening.
Blizzard conditions are expected to begin along and west of a
line from Big Springs to Valentine. Snow accumulations of up to
20 inches are expected with the heaviest snowfall expected over
Sheridan and western Cherry County.

Lighter snow amounts are likely further south and east but the
development of strong northwesterly winds gusting up to 60 mph
are likely, leading to considerable blowing and drifting snow and
sharp visibility restrictions.

Strong winds will continue into late afternoon Thursday,
continuing the threat for blowing snow. Winds begin to diminish
Thursday evening with the threat for blowing snow decreasing as
well.

...PATCHY DENSE FOG OVERNIGHT...

Areas of fog are across portions of southwest Nebraska and the
central and eastern Sandhills, including portions of Interstate
80. While visibilities as low as one half mile are generally
expected, visibilities may be locally reduced to one quarter mile
at times.

Travelers should use extra caution and be prepared for drops in
visibility over short distances tonight.
