Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service North Platte NE 630 AM CDT Tue May 28 2019 .SHORT TERM...(Today through Wednesday) Issued at 422 AM CDT Tue May 28 2019 Moderate to heavy rain showers are currently moving across portions of north central and western Nebraska. These showers are not expected to be severe with heavy rain being the main threat. Up to 0.75 inches of new precipitation can be expected for some locations in the central Sandhills and central Nebraska. Be prepared for reductions in visibility in heavy rain as well as some washed out rural/dirt roadways. Showers and thunderstorms will slowly track and push north and east over the next several hours with light rain lingering across most of the forecast area throughout Tuesday. Rain could be heavy at times especially across the north where another half inch could be seen. For the most part, severe weather is not expected, although, small hail and brief wind gusts up to 40 mph could be possible. The best chance for severe weather on Tuesday afternoon and evening will be east of a line from North Platte to Springview. Any severe storms will only briefly impact our forecast area before moving east into neighboring forecast areas. Besides a rain and isolated thunderstorm threat on Tuesday, the other main concern for Tuesday will be the cooler temperatures that will filter in behind the departing front. Current models show 850mb temperatures in the 6 to 10 C range pushing into northern Nebraska on Tuesday. Rain, cloudy skies, and this cooler airmass will keep high temperatures today in the upper 40s across the Pine Ridge region and only in the low 60s south of I-80. Lingering rain showers and thunderstorms continue into Wednesday. Heavy rain will continue to be a concern north of Highway 2 with up to an inch of new precipitation expected from Tuesday night through Thursday. The best chance for lingering rain showers will be across the northern Sandhills and into north central Nebraska. Once again, severe weather is not anticipated as the best instability remains well off to the east. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Monday) Issued at 422 AM CDT Tue May 28 2019 Lingering rain continues into Thursday as well. Gradual drying conditions are expected throughout the day as surface high pressure slowly builds into the region. A few isolated thunderstorms could be possible across the eastern Sandhills on Thursday afternoon. Confidence is very low in development in these storms. Any storms will be short lived as the high builds into the area. Quieter and drier weather returns on Thursday night lasting through the first part of next weekend. Isolated thunderstorms and rain showers return on Saturday night with a better chance of thunderstorms on Sunday night. Confidence in severe weather is low at this time. For temperatures, highs will slowly rise through the end of the week. Highs by Friday will be back in the 70s. Temperatures remain steady in the mid 70s to low 80s for the weekend. Overnight lows will also start off chilly with nighttime temperatures in the low to upper 40s on Tuesday night.
