Showers developed across northwestern Puerto Rico with Doppler radar estimates around three inches over Moca. Once this activity moved over waters, lightning was observed. For tomorrow, a small fragment of moisture located east of the Lesser Antilles will approach the local islands and it could bring a few passing showers. However, rainfall activity should not be significant. && .AVIATION... Mainly VFR conditions are anticipated through the forecast period. VCSH are expected for TJMZ/TJBQ between 2017Z-2022Z, which could briefly reduced VIS to MVFR conditions. The TJSJ 20/00Z sounding shows FL050 out of the ESE winds at 7 to 20 knots. && .MARINE... Seas below small craft advisory criteria are expected through the end of the week. However, small craft operators are urged to exercise caution due to seas up to 6 feet and winds up to 15 knots. For the beachgoers, there is a moderate risk of rip currents for most of the local beaches. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 126 PM AST Thu Dec 19 2019/ SYNOPSIS... We are still under an area of surface divergence and subsidence, with satellite indicating very dry conditions across the region. Only a few isolated and weak showers have occurred today, moving from southeast to northwest, and minimal shower activity is expected for the next few days. Winds and seas are calming down as a large area of high pressure in the central Atlantic moves off to the east. Long range models forecast a front approaching for Christmas, though models disagree on the timing. SHORT TERM...Rest of today through Saturday... Overall fair weather conditions will prevail across much of the forecast area and most of the period as we should remain on the subsident side of the subtropical ridge, forecast to remain in place through the weekend. A weak short wave trough will move across the west Atlantic by Saturday. This would briefly erode the dominant ridge along with the trade wind cap inversion allowing better chance for shower development. However, expect this to be short-lived as another ridge of high pressure will quickly enter and spread across the Atlantic once again during the remainder of the weekend. The overall forecast scenario should maintain light to moderate easterly trade winds which will bring less frequent trade wind moisture across the local waters and parts of the islands on Friday into early Saturday. Locally and diurnally induced afternoon convection will be limited to the interior and west sections of Puerto Rico, and mainly on the west end or just downwind of the rest of the islands. By Saturday afternoon a weak frontal trough is to settle across the west Atlantic and press against the Atlantic ridge located across the central and eastern Atlantic. This in turn will favor a more east southeast wind flow as the ridge will lift northeast of the area. The east southeast wind flow should then pull additional tropical moisture from the Caribbean across the region thus supporting a better chance for early morning and afternoon convection. The activity should however be of short duration with no significant or widespread accumulations forecast for the period at this time. LONG TERM...Sunday through Friday... However, the typical trade wind showers will continue to move at times across the local waters and windward sections each day. Model guidance is suggesting a change in the weather pattern by Christmas Eve with the arrival of an mid- to upper-level low and a frontal boundary. The guidance had shown inconsistency associated with the timing and location of these features. However, if this unstable and wet pattern holds, showers and thunderstorms would be observed during the Eve and the Day of Christmas. A ridge pattern and the typical easterly winds are forecast to return across the Northeast Caribbean as the TUTT-Low moves into the Central Atlantic Thursday and Friday. AVIATION...
