A cold front will sink across the area tonight with drizzle and
light rain possible. This activity will change over to a period of
accumulating snow from north to south later tonight into Monday as
low pressure develops along the front and colder air settles in.
Snowfall totals between 3 and 5 inches appear possible by Monday
evening. The focus then changes to lake effect snow and very cold
temperatures Monday night into Tuesday. Highs on Tuesday will only
reach the low to mid 20s, with wind chills in the single digits
above zero expected as well.

...FIRST WIDESPREAD ACCUMULATING SNOW OF THE SEASON MONDAY, FOLLOWED
BY RECORD BREAKING COLD AND LAKE EFFECT SNOW INTO MONDAY NIGHT AND
TUESDAY...

A surface cold front now extending sw to ne near the US 24 corridor
will continue to drift southeast into the early evening thanks to
incoming height falls and surface ridging expanding east into
Ontario. Low levels will continue to moisten along and behind this
feature with low clouds and perhaps some spotty drizzle/light rain
possible, best chances across far northern zones into the early
overnight.

Snow, initially mixed with rain to start, will then develop later
tonight into early Monday morning mainly north of Route 6 (far nrn
IN/far nw OH/lower MI). This activity will then pivot southeast
through the rest of the area during the day Monday into early Monday
evening with widespread snow accumulations anticipated. A digging
mid level pv anomaly approaching from the Canadian Rockies, and
increasingly favorable upper jet support on the southwest periphery
of a 150 knot polar jet phasing across the northern Lakes into
southeast Canada, will act to enhance low-mid level frontogenetical
forcing along the leftover baroclinic zone that will pivot through
during this time. This more focused fgen response and slightly
better moisture transport support the overall increase in model QPF
over the last several runs with a more robust sfc frontal wave
tracking east-northeast through the Ohio River Valley. QPF (synoptic)
generally ranges between 0.30-0.50" with more trusted 12z guidance.
The bulk of the vertical emotion appears to take place outside of a
shallow and high based DGZ during the event, while sfc temperatures
gradually drop from near freezing to start and into the upper 20s to
finish. This came out to SLR's generally in the 10-14:1 range, near
to slightly below climo overall. With that, system snow totals (late
tonight into Monday) came out in the 3-5 inch range for most,
though locally higher amounts not out the question as xsections
continue to show some mesobanding potential thanks to weak -EPV
above the frontogenetic layer. Sfc temperatures dropping into the
upper 20s and recent cold stretch should be enough to compensate for
relatively early season time frame to allow snow to accumulate on
paved surfaces (at least bridges, overpasses and lesser used
roads) as well as grassy/elevated surfaces.

Attention Monday night into Tuesday night will then turn to lake
effect snow and cold temps as an early season arctic outbreak
overspreads the Eastern US and synoptic snow exits off to the east.
A few records may be broken as highs on Tuesday struggle to reach
the mid 20s (~30 degrees below normal). Wind chills will likely
bottom out in the single digits above zero for a time. The bigger
story however is the potential for significant lake effect snow in
favored nw flow (320-330 deg) zones Monday night into Tuesday. The
thermodynamics are impressive as expected with 700 mb delta T's
spiking into the low-mid 30s and inversion heights to between 10-12
kft. Bufkit soundings also show saturation wrt ice and higher omega
values centered within the DGZ for a time. There also
appears to be very little shear in the convective layer with
extremely unstable conditions within the lake plume hinting at the
potential for rather intense snowfall rates with LE snow
squalls/bands. Whether this activity becomes more cellular (less
organized) due to such strong instability and overspread of
drier/subsident air in wake of upper trough, or if there is a
"window" Monday night into early Tuesday for a stronger snow
band(s) to become quasi-stationary for a time will determine how
much and where more significant snow amounts and impacts will
occur in far nw IN and sw Lower MI (La Porte/St Joe
IN/Elkhart/Cass MI/Berrien). Stay tuned as significant disruptions
to travel are expected in these favored lake effect zones. A few
flurries and very cold elsewhere Monday night-Tuesday.

Temperatures will gradually moderate late week into next weekend as
the flow pattern deamplifies some and arctic wedge lifts out into New
England and Southeast Canada. As for precipitation chances, a
period of light warm advection snow still appears possible later
Wednesday into early Thursday as a pacific wave tracks through in
nw flow aloft. Some light snow accumulation appears possible,
though models continue to differ a bit on the evolution of this
system. The next chance for precipitation then arrives around
Sunday or Monday.

Quasi-stationary frontal boundary over the area this afternoon
already bringing MVFR cigs to KSBN and expected to arrive at KFWA
this evening. Enhanced forcing and overrunning moisture behind the
front will increase precip chances overnight...beginning as RA/SN
mix before changing to all snow Monday morning. Arrival of snow
will bring visibilities down to MVFR and possible IFR but more
toward the end of this TAF cycle so will address at next issuance.
