Snow will diminish across the area this afternoon before lake effect
develops northwest this evening. Bitterly cold air will follow from
Tuesday through Thursday with temperatures dropping well below zero
with wind chills becoming dangerously cold and likely approaching 50
below Wednesday.

.SHORT TERM...(through Wednesday night)

Intense frontal precip band continues to work east across the area.
Mixed precip zone confined largely to se flank where dry
entrainment/less vigorous wetbulbing occuring in lighter precip
rates. Further west/northwest all snow where most intense precip
continues. Nevertheless precip will end/diminish most areas this
aftn. Exception continues to be nw areas within expected lake
enhanced plume that develops on backside of departing sfc cyclone.
12Z highres guidance continues with the notion of a backbending sfc
trough through sw MI with should accentuate the response as seen in
various qpf prog signals. Have made few adjustments here as prior
fcst adequately capture this threat.

Thereafter a true arctic invasion this period as polar vortex over
ern MB drops into lower MI Tue evening. Coldest air in decades will
overspread the area Tue night/Wed am with temps dumping way below
zero with all-time records (mins/low max) in jeopardy. Leading
arctic front will spread snow showers across the area Tue aftn along
with rapid jump in winds Tue evening given strong isallobaric
response within maximized low level cold advection. 10m momentum
transfer very robust with top end mixed layer heights near 4k ft and
suggest a top end 40kt wind gust potential which does not diminish
until Wed morning. Otherwise dangerous wind chills approaching -50
expected.

Thus spells the headline quandry with additional impacts
from blowing/drifting snow and continued lake effect through srn MI.
All highres based plume diagrams indicate heavy lake snow bands
developing with abandon Tue aftn and persisting into Wed morning
before weakening. While initial thermal profile favorable for
dendrites most of the event favors columns/plates and holds snow
accumulation rates in check. Best guess is a general 4-8" additional
accumulation in Berrien/Cass which tapers east into 2-3" across St.
Joseph and less that 2" further east. Intensity of low level thermal
trough and backed flow across the lake should keep most of this lake
event out of nw IN.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Sunday)

While wind chill warning starts this period, an amazing pattern flip
in store as polar vortex lifts out through ern Canada Thu and
upstream flow across the CONUS flattens aloft through Sun. This
allows an equally impressive and amazing thermal ridge to spread
across the lakes/OH valley with temps Sun 50-60 degrees warmer than
Wed. In the transition one more embedded disturbance progressing
through the flow to deal with Thu night with generally light snow
expected as better moisture return stays south along the OH river
and points south.

As of this issuance, I am tracking an area of LIFR visby and
ceilings in our central county warning area. As such, opted for the
TEMPO approach at FWA. I have high confidence in precip being all
snow within that area. Otherwise, on either side of that, both
liquid and/or snow is probable. LIFR snow continues at SBN and is
expected to gradually end as we near 00z. However, snow showers can
continue through the period thanks to Lake Michigan. For both sites,
gusty winds are expected for a time near 00z before tapering off
overnight. A renewed push of gusty winds are forecast during the day
on Tuesday.

   Wind Chill Watch.

Strong winds combined with subzero temperatures will cause wind
chills of 30 below to 50 below from late Tuesday into early
Thursday. Significant disruptions in travel and commerce are likely
from Monday into Thursday. Blowing and drifting snow is also
possible.

Southeastern Lake Michigan.

.DAY ONE...Today and tonight.

Gale force winds are expected through tonight. Dangerous conditions are
ahead this upcoming week for all marine vessels.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday.

Dangerous conditions will persist through Thursday for all marine
vessels. Lake effect snow showers with gale force winds from Tuesday
into Thursday will cause heavy freezing spray. In addition, rapid
ice accumulation is possible on Lake Michigan which may make
navigation difficult.
