A low pressure system is expected to move through the Ohio Valley
through tonight. In the wake of this system, high pressure is
expected to build in for the rest of the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /Today and Tonight/...
Issued at 301 AM EST Mon Dec 16 2019

Radar loop and short term model data indicate the steadier snow
should continue to diminish across the area over the next few
hours. Should be a break in the more significant precipitation for
a period this morning, however surface observations indicates
there may be areas of drizzle or freezing drizzle around for much
of the morning hours.

Organized lift from the next wave currently over the southern Plains
is progged by the short term models to begin moving into the
southwest zones by early this afternoon, aided by a 40-50 kt low
level jet nosing into southern Kentucky. Will go with chance PoPs
for mixed precipitation this morning, and go with high PoPs during
the afternoon hours. Forecast soundings suggest the elevated warm
layer will reach into the southern zones later today, but
probably not much farther than that. As a result, will lean
towards more of a rain or mixed precipitation over about the
southern third of the area, with mostly snow farther north.

Will keep PoPs rather high well into the night tonight, as models
suggest a deformation zone may set up over the area for a period
later tonight. Given developing cold advection and lowering
thicknesses, mixed precipitation should tend to change over to
snow over the southern zones during the night.

Appears there is potential for an additional 2-4 inches of snow later
this afternoon and tonight over parts of the area. Reports
indicate that some of the central zones have already received
around 4 inches from the previous wave. May upgrade the advisory
to a warning for a period this afternoon and tonight over some of
the central zones, given what has already fallen, expected
additional accumulations, and the fact that heavier snow will
impact the evening commute. Otherwise, due to the areas of
freezing drizzle expected to linger this morning, will keep the
advisory as is.

Due to thick cloud cover and expected precipitation, will shave a
couple of degrees off of the GFs MOS highs today. The guidance lows
tonight look OK.

.SHORT TERM /Tuesday through Wednesday Night/...
Issued at 301 AM EST Mon Dec 16 2019

Generally dry conditions expected during this period, as surface
highs pressure slides through the local area. May leave a lingering
PoP for light snow over the eastern zones Tuesday morning to cover
any activity that may in the process of exiting the local area.

Progged low level thicknesses suggest the GFS MOS highs for Tuesday
may be too cool. Will cut about a category off of the guidance highs
in that period. The remainder of the periods look OK for now.

.LONG TERM /Thursday through Sunday/...

High pressure will remain the predominant weather feature through
much of the extended period with dry conditions and quiet weather
anticipated. A few disturbances aloft will track across the Great
Lakes Friday into Saturday but in the absence of stronger forcing
aloft and deeper moisture...expect just an increase in clouds
over the area as these system pass by to the north.

After the midweek chill...temperatures will recover to near to
even slightly above normal levels into the weekend. Highs in the
lower and mid 30s Thursday will rise into the lower and mid 40s
by the weekend.

.AVIATION /Discussion for 160900Z TAF Update/...

Minor adjustments are in order based on current obs but overall
TAFs have the situation well in hand. While snow has largely
ended...IFR conditions and lower linger and will likely continue
to do so for the next few hours.

06Z discussion follows.

Snow bands are moving off to the northeast. Should still see snow
at KLAF and KIND for another hour (KIND) or two (KLAF) before snow
transitions to a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing drizzle at
KIND and then just freezing drizzle, and ends altogether at KLAF.
KHUF and KBMG should continue to see off and on freezing drizzle
for a couple of hours before enough dry air arrives to bring
precip to an end. Ceilings should remain IFR or lower through the
overnight for the most part, but cannot rule out a brief period
where the dry air mixes out the lower ceilings before they build
back in at IFR or lower through all of Monday. Snow should move
back in Monday afternoon. Winds will generally be northeasterly
around 7 to 10 kts through the period.

This hazardous weather outlook is for central Indiana.

.DAY ONE...Tonight.

Outlook: Snow tonight. Snow will be locally heavy this evening into
the early overnight. Freezing drizzle will likely mix in with snow
along and south of Interstate 70 late tonight.

Hazards: Slick and snow covered roads. Reduced visibilities within
heavier snowfall. 2 to 5 inches of snow tonight over central Indiana
with light icing possible along and south of I-70. The heaviest
snowfall will likely be along the I-70 corridor.

Timing: Snow has begun across southern portions of central Indiana
and will overspread the area this evening. The heaviest snowfall is
expected this evening into the early part of the overnight. Any
freezing drizzle will mix in late tonight.

Discussion: A frontal boundary will set up late today over the lower
Ohio Valley and remain nearly stationary into Monday. An intense snow
band will move through central Indiana this evening. Freezing drizzle
will likely mix in with the snow at times tonight along and south of
Interstate 70 and especially across southern portions of central
Indiana.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday.

Outlook: Additional light snowfall accumulations likely late Monday
through early Tuesday.

Discussion: After an extended period of little to no precipitation
Monday...a surface wave will track along the front Monday night
bringing another round of snow through much of central Indiana
through Tuesday morning. Additional light snow accumulations of 1 to
possibly as much as 2 inches are possible. Total amounts of 4-7
inches with isolated higher amounts are expected along and either
side of the I-70 corridor.

The Monday morning and evening commutes will be impacted by winter
weather conditions.
