The SYNOPSIS...NEAR TERM...SHORT TERM and LONG TERM Sections have been updated below. && .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 235 AM EST Fri Jan 11 2019 Cold high pressure in place across the Ohio Valley will slowly exit the area today...providing one more day of dry and cold weather for Central Indiana. A strong low pressure system will sweep toward Indiana tonight from the southern plains. Snow is expected to spread across Indiana starting late tonight...continuing into Saturday before ending late Saturday night. This will result in the first significant snowfall across Central Indiana of the winter season. Roads may be snow covered and hazardous on Saturday and Saturday Night. High pressure will then build across the region for Sunday and the start of the next work week...bringing dry and cold weather for much of next week. && .NEAR TERM /Today/... Issued at 235 AM EST Fri Jan 11 2019 Surface Analysis early this morning shows high pressure stretching from Indiana and the Great Lakes to the Tennessee Valley. Low pressure was found across the Texas panhandle. GOES16 shows stratocu across all but SW Central Indiana...with clear skies across SW Indiana and most of Kentucky. Water vapor shows a plume of tropical moisture stream into the American Southwest...Ahead of a upper trough over the Rockies and over the developing low. Weak ridging was found over the plains states...and some ridge riding CI was spilling into Indiana. Forecast soundings today show a dry column across Central Indiana. Aloft the GFS and NAM suggest the ridge axis aloft will be found across the Mississippi Valley...leading to continued lee side subsidence through much of the day. This upper ridge axis doesn't pass Indiana until later tonight...which is when more moist air should begin to arrive. Thus will trend toward just a partly cloudy sky today along with cold temps as winds will continue to keep a E-SE component to them. Will trend highs at or below the forecast builder blends. && .SHORT TERM /Tonight through Sunday Night/... Issued at 235 AM EST Fri Jan 11 2019 The first significant winter system to impact Central Indiana this winter is expected to arrive late tonight...continue on Saturday...before exiting the area on Sunday. Dry and cold weather looks to return on Sunday Night. Models suggest the upper trough over the Rockies will sweep into the southern plains tonight before passing into Mississippi Valley on Saturday. Ahead of the upper trough strong dynamics aloft are indicated to sweep across Indiana during the overnight and into Saturday. 290K isentropic surface shows strong isentropic lift arriving late tonight and persisting into Saturday. Specific humidities indicate a surge to values near 3 g/kg...through Saturday and persisting in to Saturday night. Forecast soundings show a saturated column across the area staring late tonight and continuing through very early Sunday morning...with pwats over 0.60 inches. The isentropic lift will be the first part of the system late tonight and and Saturday...while a second forcing mechanism arrives Saturday night...namely the passing of the 700mb low...pushing along the I-70 corridor. Again...forecast soundings respond to this feature with continued saturation. Thus with this double shot of forcing...along with a plenty of moisture expected...will expect an easy 4-6 inches of snow across the area. Thus will trend toward a winter storm warning for much of the forecast area. Highest amounts still should be found mainly along and south of I-70. Given the expected snow will trend lows warmer and highs cooler than the blends. Forecast soundings suggest dry air arriving within the column on Sunday morning as the mid level low and surface low begin to depart to the east and high pressure over the plains begins to build across the region. Cyclonic flow will still be in place for much of Sunday...and wrap around cloud and cold air advection will remain in play. Within that...a typical scattered flurry or snow shower cannot be ruled out. Again will trend highs below the blends. By Sunday night the entire column is much drier and the lower level flow becomes anticyclonic as high pressure continues to build from the west. Thus will trend toward becoming mostly clear and with new snow and ongoing cold air advection will trend lows cooler than the blends. && .LONG TERM /Monday through Friday/... Issued at 235 AM EST Fri Jan 11 2019 Dry conditions are expected in the beginning of the long term period as high pressure slowly moves east across the Midwest. The next chance for precipitation comes midweek as models indicate a series of weak upper level waves move through the area. Overall dynamics look weak and with little moisture, little to no accumulation of rain or snow is expected. Temperatures at the start of the period will near to slightly below normal before warming to slightly above normal by midweek. Blend temperatures may be a bit high at the start of the period with an expected snowpack and clear skies Monday night, so trended a bit lower than the blend. && .AVIATION /Discussion for the 11/06Z TAF Issuance/... Issued at 1152 PM EST Thu Jan 10 2019 Kept at least a tempo MVFR ceiling at LAF through 07z and IND through 10z as satellite continues to show the southwestern edge of low clouds has been slow to move northeast and GFS LAMP keeps trending slower improvement as well.
