What forecasters said that day
The local office's own words before this wind chill warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS Indianapolis, IN wrote its last area forecast discussion before this wind chill warning went out at Jan 28, 3:25 PM EST, 7 minutes earlier.
Area forecast discussion, Jan 28, 3:25 PM EST, 7 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Indianapolis IN 325 PM EST Mon Jan 28 2019 .UPDATE... The SYNOPSIS...NEAR TERM and SHORT TERM sections have been updated below. && .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 325 PM EST Mon Jan 28 2019 A couple of surges of arctic air will bring dangerous cold to central Indiana mid week. Temperatures will moderate late week and become above normal this weekend. Lingering rain or snow will continue this evening as one system exits. Other chances for snow will come Tuesday and again Thursday into Friday. Rain is possible late in the weekend into next week. && .NEAR TERM /Rest of This Afternoon and Tonight/... Issued at 325 PM EST Mon Jan 28 2019 Rain and snow were moving through central Indiana this afternoon ahead of a cold front which was just moving into the far western portions of the area. The precipitation will continue to march east through the remainder of the afternoon. By the start time of the tonight period, only the far east will have any chances for measurable precipitation. These will quickly exit the area by mid-evening. A few flurries could linger, mainly in the northern part of the area. Not expecting much if any additional snow accumulation across the area. Temperatures will crash into the evening, and this could freeze some of the water on roads. Will handle with a Special Weather Statement. By morning, temperatures will be in the single digits to the middle teens. Gusty winds will make it feel below zero. && .SHORT TERM /Tuesday through Thursday/... Issued at 325 PM EST Mon Jan 28 2019 Models are close enough that the model initialization was accepted for most items. Tuesday will be cold, and the first half of the day will be dry. However, another surge of arctic air will move in during the afternoon and continue moving through during the evening. Some models, especially the NAM, have good forcing with this front with strong frontgenetical forcing. This seems reasonable given the strength of the cold air behind it. The problem will be moisture. For now have upped PoPs into the slight chance to low chance categories and have mentioned isolated to scattered snow showers. Will have to keep an eye on the potential for brief intense snow showers with the front if it can squeeze out enough moisture. Wednesday looks dry with the arctic high moving in. Will have some low PoPs Thursday with the warmer air beginning to return to the area. Concerning the arctic air, still looks like well below zero temperatures will move in for Tuesday night. Similar temperatures can be expected Wednesday night as the arctic high moves over the area. The northern half or so of the area should remain below zero Wednesday during the day as well. Gusty winds will continue Tuesday into Wednesday, and these produce a brutal wind chill. Winds will lessen Wednesday night into Thursday as the high moves into the area, but models are hinting that winds will not really go calm as the high moves across. Most of the area will move into Wind Chill Warning criteria Tuesday evening and will remain there into Wednesday. However, the southern half of the area may get out of warning criteria Wednesday night into Thursday as winds lessen. Rather than try to get super detailed and produce confusing headlines changing a warning into an advisory halfway through the event, decided to keep it simple. Will go Wind Chill Warning all but the southern row of counties Tuesday evening through Thursday morning. The far south will see a Wind Chill Advisory. Adjustments to the warning and advisory are likely as the event unfolds. && .LONG TERM /Thursday Night through Monday/... Issued at 229 PM EST Mon Jan 28 2019 Period starts off still underneath the cold regime associated with strong vortex extending from southeast Ontario into south central Quebec/Lower Great Lakes region. Strong northwesterly mid/upper level jet will extend from northwest MN through northeast IL into southeast OH, which keeps much of our area within that cold air mass into Friday morning. There is a small shortwave trough embedded within the northwest flow which will be enough for light snow late Thursday night into Friday morning. The expected clouds and precipitation with this system will keep us well below normal, but not as cold as previous nights. but still in the 10 degree vicinity. But, on Friday, the flow gradually shifts as the mid/upper level low moves northeast from the lower Great Lakes and brings us more under the influence of systems moving from the western U.S. helping to modify the air mass/temperatures from Saturday (Groundhog's Day) into Monday. Temperatures begin warming Friday into Saturday where the area will be in the lower 40s to around 50 on Sunday to mid 50s Monday. A mid level trough will move over the area early Saturday associated with a frontal system that will bring some rainshowers along with the mild temperatures over the weekend. && .AVIATION /Discussion for the 281800Z Tafs/... Issued at 1225 PM EST Mon Jan 28 2019 MVFR conditions are expected to deteriorate to MVFR or IFR in the next 2-4 hours. MVFR conditions are expected overnight. Cold front remains over Illinois at this time...making progress eastward. Radar shows an area of rain/snow ahead of the front over NW Indiana. As the Low pressure system over NE Illinois continues to pull northeast...the cold front and associated precipitation will be dragged across Central Indiana. HRRR indicates a period of precipitation this afternoon passing...and time heights and forecast soundings show lower level saturation this afternoon and evening with good lift. In the wake of the front...cold air advection is expected to begin and forecast soundings hint at trapped strato-cu and lower level saturation. Thus will keep MVFR cigs in place overnight given the cold air advection and cyclonic lower level flow. && .IND WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
