.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 317 AM EST Wed Feb 6 2019

A frontal boundary will oscillate across the Ohio Valley
through Thursday..continuing the wet and unsettled pattern. Periods
of moderate to heavy rainfall will impact the Ohio Valley until a
strong cold front sweeps across the area Thursday evening. Dry and
much colder weather returns Friday through the first part of the
weekend...but a storm system will bring more unsettled weather
Sunday into early next week with potential for light snow
accumulations.

.NEAR TERM /Today/...
Issued at 317 AM EST Wed Feb 6 2019

Active and wet early morning ongoing across central Indiana with the
inaugural round of lightning and thunder for many for 2019. Locally
heavy but brief rainfall...especially from near Muncie southwest
across the Indy metro to Terre Haute.  The frontal boundary still
remains just south of the region at 08Z...but still a modest
temperature gradient from north to south over the forecast area
from the upper 30s to near 50.

Surface wave with the northward moving front responsible for the
moderate to heavy rainfall and pockets of convection early this
morning. This will continue through the morning as the wave moves
east and the front settles back south of the region near the Ohio
River by early afternoon. Solid model consensus on a more active
morning with a quieter afternoon as precipitation focuses south of
the region closer to the boundary. Have focused highest pops through
midday before dropping back to chance pops at best for the afternoon
as drier air aloft spreads south into the area. Areas of fog will
continue to impact the region through the morning as well.

Model soundings continue to show a very sharp inversion at 1000-
2000ft all day which will mitigate any potential at breaks in the
low stratus anywhere this afternoon. Some potential for drizzle to
linger in spots through the afternoon...especially over southern
counties in closer proximity to the boundary.

Already some areas have received over an inch of rain with the
waves of showers that have tracked across the region since Tuesday
evening. While some flooding is possible through the morning as
convection moves east...expect this batch of rain will be the primer
or table setter for the rounds of rain and convection anticipated
for tonight and Thursday ahead of a strong cold front. For that
reason and with the expectation of a 6-9 hour window with little
rain across the area later this afternoon and early evening...will
not make any changes to the start time of the flood watch until 00Z
this evening. The rains coming tonight and Thursday will have the
potential to produce more widespread flooding considering rainfall
Tuesday evening and this morning as well as the antecedent
saturated ground across central Indiana.

Temps...likely to be a noticeable gradient in temperatures from
north to south today...ranging from the upper 40s to lower 60s.
Low level thermals largely aligned closer to the warmer MAVMOS which
was supported by model consensus as well.

.SHORT TERM /Tonight through Friday Night/...

Forecast challenges focus on the heavy rainfall and flooding threats
through Thursday evening...followed by a rapid transition back to
winter for Friday into the weekend as a much colder and drier
airmass overspreads the region.

Progressively more amplified upper flow regime through Thursday as a
strong upper trough kicks east into the central Plains and a ridge
flexes over the Gulf of Mexico. This will maintain a moist southwest
flow transporting Pacific moisture into the Ohio Valley. At
the surface...the frontal boundary will oscillate across the region
tonight and Thursday as multiple surface waves track along the
boundary before a strengthening wave lifts from the southern Plains
into the Great Lakes late Thursday. This will swing a strong cold
front across central INdiana in the late afternoon and early
evening...ending the threat for heavy rain and providing a reminder
that the calendar still says February as temperatures tumble
Thursday night.

Besides the Pacific fetch present aloft...Gulf moisture will advect
north through the lower levels interacting and overrunning the
frontal boundary across the region. There appears to be two waves of
heavier rainfall potential for the region. The first comes later
tonight with a wave accompanying the boundary as it lifts north
through the area...followed by a second wave mid morning
into the afternoon Thursday immediately ahead of the cold frontal
passage. Presence of a low level jet strengthening to 50-60kts ahead
of the cold front with precip water values surging above climo
norms to 1.25-1.50 inches with enhanced diffluence in the
mid and upper levels will maintain a heavy rainfall threat through
Thursday. Elevated instability present will promote a convective
component Wednesday night and Thursday where rainfall rates may be
elevated. There also remains potential for strong winds to be pulled
to the surface for a short time with any low topped convection with
the wave late tonight...especially over southern portions of the
forecast area...and again Thursday late afternoon immediately ahead
of the front.

Once the front passes Thursday evening...intense cold advection
commences immediately with temperatures crashing rapidly.
Equivalent potential temp profiles go vertical for a few hours
Thursday night and combined with a strong surface pressure
gradient and the cold advection...expect wind gusts to periodically
approach 35 to possibly 40 mph for several hours Thursday night.
Also not out of the question for precipitation to end as a few
snowflakes late Thursday evening but not anticipating any impact.
One impact that may need to be considered for the Friday morning
commute is the potential for a flash freeze as temperatures drop 30-
35 degrees from sunset Thursday to daybreak Friday. The gusty winds
may help to mitigate this concern somewhat and dry surfaces...but
this will be something to monitor.

A strong area of high pressure will expand across the area from the
Canadian prairies for Friday with dry and much colder air returning.
Expect plenty of sunshine Friday and a continuation of gusty flow as
the pressure gradient remains tight. Winds will relax Friday night
as the core of the high moves into the region.

Temps...the roller coaster ride continues with the temperatures.
After highs climbing into the low and mid 60s over much of the
forecast area Thursday...expect highs only in the 20s Friday. A mild
night tonight with temperatures remaining in the 50s in some areas
will fall all the way into the single digits and teens by Friday
night. An overall model blend worked reasonable for most periods
with a lean towards the MAVMOS. Subzero wind chills are possible for
some Friday and Friday night.

.LONG TERM /Saturday through Tuesday/...

Ensembles are in good agreement overall in suggesting a
progressive nature to the long wave features during this period.
Mean upper ridging over the local area this weekend will drift off
to the east, while upper troughing moves into the Plains by next
Tuesday.

Despite the overall agreement with the main features, there are
considerable differences among the individual members as to the
timing, track, and intensity of disturbances that may eject out of
the approaching western trough. For now, will broadbrush PoPs for
mixed precipitation from Sunday through the end of the forecast
period. PoPs will probably need fine tuning as trends to the
disturbances get established with time. At this time, ensembles
suggest potential for some accumulating snow at times.

Short term model guidance suggest decent lift will continue across
the area into the mid to late morning hours, so should see fairly
widespread rainfall linger at the terminals through that time.
Still some embedded lightning strikes around, so there will
continue to be a potential for lightning strikes in the vicinity
of the terminals as well.

The LIFR ceilings/visibilities have been becoming less widespread
over the past few hours, as convection and lift have mixed up the
air mass some. Expecting the LIFR conditions to become more
widespread later this morning as lift diminishes, and a cold front
passes through. Short term model guidance suggests conditions may
improve to above IFR by early afternoon, but confidence is low
here, given the extensive low ceilings in the post frontal zone,
and weak dry advection.

Expecting surface winds to gradually become 300-320 degrees at 5-8
kts later this morning into the midday hours, as a cold front
passes over the terminals. Surface winds should continue to
gradually veer this afternoon, eventually becoming 010-040 degrees
by sunset.

.HYDROLOGY...

As mentioned above...the rain this morning is largely serving as
the primer for the expectation of more widespread flooding with
heavy rainfall tonight and Thursday. For that reason...will
maintain a start time of 00Z tonight for the Flood Watch and
maintain it over the southern 2/3 of the forecast area where the
heavier rainfall amounts are anticipated. Any flood issues prior
to this evening should be more isolated. An additional 2-3 inches
look quite plausible by the time rain ends Thursday evening.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday.

Outlook: Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected through Thursday
evening. The rain and the potential for ice jams on area creeks and
rivers may cause flooding on streams. A few thunderstorms are
possible as well Thursday. Rain may briefly mix with or change to
snow before ending Thursday night. Wind gusts up to 35 to 40 mph will
be possible as well Thursday night.

Another storm system will will bring the chance of a wintry mix of
rain and snow to the area Sunday into early next week.

Discussion: Rain and a few thunderstorms will continue until a
strong cold front sweeps across central Indiana Thursday evening.
Dry and much colder weather will return for Friday and Saturday
before yet another storm system brings unsettled weather late weekend
into early next week. Enough cold air may be present for snow with
