Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Indianapolis IN 322 PM EST Sat Feb 9 2019 .UPDATE... The AVIATION Section has been updated below. && .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 302 PM EST Sat Feb 9 2019 High pressure over Indiana will exit the area tonight...providing a night and early morning of dry weather. A warm front will surge toward the Ohio Valley along with an upper level weather disturbance on Sunday. This will result in snow returning to central Indiana on Sunday afternoon. Only small accumulations will be expected. The warm front is expected to linger across Central Indiana on Sunday night through Monday. This will bring continued precipitation chances to central Indiana possibly including mixed precipitation eventually changing over to all rain on Monday and Monday night. A cold front will push across the area on Tuesday...bringing more rain. Some of the rain could result in additional flooding...particularly across the southern parts of southern Indiana. Mainly dry weather is expected for the middle of the work week before a cold front arrives on Friday and precipitation chances return. && .NEAR TERM /Tonight/... Issued at 302 PM EST Sat Feb 9 2019 Surface analysis early this afternoon shows high pressure in place across Nrn Indiana...Lake Michigan and SE Wisconsin. Low pressure was found across eastern Colorado. Water Vapor imagery showed WSW flow in place aloft with high clouds over the plains streaming east toward the Ohio Valley. Temperatures across Indiana had recovered to the middle 20s...and warm air advection was in place as the coldest air was drifting farther northeast exiting the area. Quiet weather looks to continue tonight as the surface high drifts farther to the east, models suggest mid level warm air advection as southerly flow develops aloft as the mid level ridge axis pushes east of Indiana. Clouds should begin to invade overnight as subsidence across the area associated with the departing high wanes. Thus will trend toward a dry forecast overnight with increasing clouds. Also given the warm air advection will trend lows at or above the forecast builder blends. && .SHORT TERM /Sunday through Tuesday/... Issued at 302 PM EST Sat Feb 9 2019 Active weather is set for this time period. WSW flow in place aloft with several short waves poised to push through the Ohio Valley. GFS and NAM show the first wave arriving on Sunday morning along with an impressive swath of moisture. Dry air within the lower levels may take a little while to saturated...but forecast soundings show deep saturation arriving by afternoon....and sounding remain primarily below freezing. This will lead to mainly snow as the precipitation type. With pwats near 0.75...light accumulations will be expected. Thus will trend toward a dry Sunday morning...but high pops in the afternoon...particularly across the south. Given the expected clouds and precip...will trend highs on Sunday at or below the forecast builder blends. On Sunday Night precip should wind down a bit as the initial short wave exits during the evening. A warm frontal boundary looks to set up across southern Indiana while another short wave arrives within the SW flow aloft. Warm air advection is expected to continue overnight as forecast soundings show a slow and gradual warming as the nigh progresses. Better forcing for precipitation appears to arrive near 12Z Monday as a better organized short wave looks to arrive along with a surge of moisture arriving from the southwest. The good news here is that forcing overnight appears limited...and this should lead to only minimal precipitation during a period in which mixed precipitation could be in play. thus on Sunday Night...only minimal precip will be expected. Furthermore the gradual warming expected should lead to melting of any light mixed precip that does occur. By Monday afternoon...forecast soundings are trending toward a saturated column with an overruning pattern in place along with pwats near 1 inch. Again...these values are well above normal...and will be indicative for a substantial rain. Given this rain and recent rains...a flood watch will be needed yet again. Given the expected precip here will trend lows warmer and highs cooler then the blends. On Monday Night and Tuesday Rain chances look to continue. The GFS and NAM both suggest a deep low pressure system pushing from the plains toward the Great lakes. This keeps Central indiana within the warm sector and a moisture rich SW flow will flow into the Ohio Valley ahead of another strong cold front that is suggested to push across Central Indiana late Monday night early Tuesday. A strong surface gradient will be in place also...leading to gusty winds. Again forecast soundings show deep moisture with pwats over 1 inch thus the flood watch will need to be continued. Will trend low temps at or above the blends. Frontal passage is expected near 12Z tuesday and this should lead to the end of the precip. forecast soundings dry out dramatically through the course of the day as subsidence begins to dominate. Again a strong pressure gradient will be in play and a windy day will be expected. However forecast soundings show a lower level saturated stratocu deck...which may inhibit some downward momentum of the strong gusts. We will wait and see on that but still it will be windy nonetheless...that is high confidence. Overall will trend to a wet start and a dry afternoon across Indiana on tuesday with falling temperatures through the course of the day as cold air advection will be in full swing in the wake of the front. && .LONG TERM /Tuesday night through Saturday/... Issued at 242 PM EST Sat Feb 9 2019 Models in pretty good agreement early in the period, with rain changing over to snow Tuesday night before precip comes to an end. Also expect it to be a fairly windy night given the tight pressure gradient behind the cold front so increased winds and gusts a bit from the initialization, and will have to keep an eye on this going forward. Wednesday into Thursday looks dry with upper ridging moving through, and Thursday could see highs climb back into the mid 40s to lower 50s. Pretty significant differences in the upper pattern from Thursday night on that will play a big role in the weather during that time. Both temperatures and timing/type of precipitation will depend on how these differences wind up getting resolved, thus a low confidence forecast from that point on. It appears an upper wave and surface frontal system will move in sometime during that period bringing precipitation, but again timing and type/temps are low confidence. Did not deviate from blended initialization here. && .AVIATION /Discussion for 092100z TAF issuance/... Issued at 322 PM EST Sat Feb 9 2019 Updated current conditions only.
