Issued at 1047 AM CST Mon Jan 28 2019 Looking at the short term period, some changes were made based upon the Arctic cold front swinging through the region currently. Behind the front, 20 to 30 mph sustained winds will be expected from the northwest, with gusts upward of 40 mph. This will bring colder temperatures to the region, therefore temps were dropped a degree or two in many locations through Thursday morning. Winds chills will be dangerous through this week, with the worst values coming Wednesday morning, as current forecasts range from negative 20 to negative 50. EMA reports light freezing drizzle in the northwestern counties, which agrees with current reflectivity on mosaic dual pol. Light rain in southeastern Illinois will continue through the area, moving into Indiana by mid afternoon. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) ISSUED AT 313 AM CST Mon Jan 28 2019 Predominantly southeasterly flow across Central Illinois this morning ahead of a storm system advancing into the Midwest. Out ahead of the system, light precipitation is moving through the region. Mostly snow across the north, but observations and dual pol radar both indicating a wintry mix roughly across the southern half of the state before the warmer air advances. Much of the lighter returns are not reaching the ground, which confirms the shallow dry air in the 00z ILX sounding, but quickly displaced by the warmer air to the south. Temps should continue to rise through the morning, with southerly winds gusting up to 30 mph early driving the warmer air into Central Il. Precip should become rain dominant for much of Central IL later this morning, with more of a rain/snow mix possible along and north of Interstate 74. Winds will also contribute to blowing snow, not only where it might actively be falling, but anywhere with enough of a snowpack that may not be iced over...though liquid rain may help mitigate some of that. High temperatures in the 30s makes today one of the warmer days in the forecast. Though behind todays front, the cold air moves in quickly, transitioning to snow as the system quickly moves out to the east this evening. Models have been fairly consistent with showing a swath of a loss of ice aloft after noon today, resulting in a pd of FZRA or FZDZ back in the cold air behind the boundary. Precip today will have the potential to shift types several times. After the cold moves in, and especially once the sun sets, untreated roads will risk a very rapid refreeze and travel should be cautious. The forecast dries out tonight, but the temps drop into the single digits above and below zero in most locations. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday) ISSUED AT 313 AM CST Mon Jan 28 2019 Only shift in the forecast for the last couple of days has been the trend even colder. Deep cold air drops into the broad synoptic scale trough that is dominating the central and eastern CONUS, deepening the trough and bringing an Arctic airmass to Central IL. 850 temps in the -30C to -35C range have become more widespread in Central IL and more continuity from one run to the next...in multiple models for Wednesday. In prelude, tomorrows high temperatures ranging from single digits to lower 20s in the southeast are the beginning. Overnight temperatures dropping into negative 20s north of a line from Galesburg to Bloomington...negative teens through the center of the state...will combine with winds from 15-20 mph Wednesday morning to drop wind chills to -25F to -45F. Thursday morning will be slightly colder temperatures, but less wind...still resulting in wind chills as low as -25F to -40F. Dangerous cold in place from Tuesday night to Thursday morning has resulted in the need for a Wind Chill Watch. In collaboration with surrounding offices, have opted for a CWA-wide issuance. Daytime highs on Wednesday will not provide a break, only getting above 0F south of Interstate 70. Beyond Thursday, the forecast warms with the western ridge expanding across the Plains and into the Mississippi River Valley. Given the probable remaining snow and how much climatology is worked into the MOS that far out, will more than likely see some of those numbers trend down. As expected in a northwesterly flow pattern aloft as that ridge expands, a series of small waves erupt in the noise of the pattern and the extended forecast has a series of slight chance pops for now. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon) Issued at 1144 AM CST Mon Jan 28 2019 Biggest impact to TAFs will be the strong winds throughout the period.
