Very windy conditions will prevail across central and southeast
Illinois today...with westerly gusts reaching 50-60mph at times.
The winds are due to a strong low pressure center over Wisconsin
that will be tracking into Michigan today. The winds will
gradually decrease later this afternoon into tonight, followed by
a cool and quiet Thanksgiving.

Gradient around WI low continued to show high winds that should
continue through afternoon. Extent of SC cloud mass wrapped around
the low to continue to stream over region through day. Upper low
in moisture channel rotating eastward from WI, pulling eastward
into MI through day.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
ISSUED AT 415 AM CST Wed Nov 27 2019

09z/3am surface analysis shows a 992mb low over northeast Iowa,
with a trailing cold front extending into west-central Illinois.
With a tightening pressure gradient and impressive 8-10mb 3-hour
pressure rises behind the low across western Missouri, a corridor
of extremely strong winds has developed from northern Missouri
into the SW KILX CWA. Wind gusts have already been exceeding
50mph from KUIN to KDEC, with a peak gust of 60mph at KSPI. This
high momentum air will overspread the entire area over the next
few hours as the low continues to deepen and lift northeastward
into the Great Lakes. Given upstream obs across Missouri, have
decided to expand the High Wind Warning to the entire CWA...as
wind speeds will reach 50-60mph across the board this morning.
Winds will gradually decrease later this afternoon into this
evening, with gusts dropping below 20mph tonight.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)
ISSUED AT 415 AM CST Wed Nov 27 2019

Much lighter winds are anticipated on Thanksgiving Day as high
pressure builds into the region. After that, another powerful
storm system will develop in the Rockies on Friday...then will
lift toward the Upper Midwest this weekend. The first wave of rain
will reach central Illinois Friday afternoon, followed by a period
of wet conditions Friday night through Saturday. After that, the
parent upper low will meander eastward into Illinois by
Sunday...resulting in a few lingering rain showers. The rain may
mix with or change to snow Sunday evening before the low departs
and cool/dry weather returns for early next week.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Thursday morning)
Issued at 605 AM CST Wed Nov 27 2019

Strong westerly winds gusting in excess of 40kt have spread across
central Illinois early this morning and will persist through mid-
afternoon before gradually decreasing. As high pressure builds
into the region, winds will eventually drop to less than 10kt
after 06z Thu. After a period of clear skies earlier, MVFR
ceilings have returned to the western terminals and will reach
KDEC/KCMI over the next couple of hours. Based on forecast
soundings, ceilings will rise to VFR/scatter at KSPI by 17z...then
further northeast at KBMI/KCMI by around 07z.
