Between 1 and 3 inches of snow had fallen north of I-72 since
late Friday evening, with locally higher amounts northwest of the
IL river over parts of Knox and Stark counties. Temps were in the
upper 20s over northern CWA with freezing line near or just north
of I-72. Light rain being reported as far north as Springfield,
to Decatur to Danville, though mixed with light snow at times.
Meanwhile areas from Litchfield to Paris south is rain with temps
in the mid to upper 30s, with Flora at 40F. Brisk ENE winds of
12-22 mph and gust of 20-30 mph was causing some blowing and
drifting snow from Quincy to Lincoln to Rantoul north.

Will continue the winter weather headlines through tonight across
the CWA. A winter storm warning for areas along and north of I-72
for 3-6 inches of total snow accumulations, with a winter wx
advisory south of I-72, though not starting in southern 6 counties
until this afternoon. The winter wx headlines go thru 6 pm today,
except thru midnight tonight in eastern/se IL.

Deepening 1001 mb surface low pressure over west central AR at
10Z/4 am had a warm front extending ne into the southeast MO
bootheel and southern tip of IL, and extending eastward into
central KY. Radar mosaic shows a large area of light to moderate
precipitation over much of IL, though recently diminishing over
far west central IL. Isolated thunderstorms have been mainly south
of I-64 closer to the warm front.

The latest models deepen surface low to 999 mb as it track into
western TN by 18Z/noon today, then to 994 mb over sw WV by
midnight tonight. The mixed pcpn including chance of freezing rain
as far north as I-72, will change to snow from I-72 south to I-70
through the morning, with southeast IL seeing rain change to snow
during the afternoon, as cold air ushers in. Blowing and drifting
snow currently north of I-72, will also shift southward into
southeast IL during mid/late afternoon, and continue this evening.
Models show the light snow diminishing over areas from I-55 west
during this morning, and diminishing over eastern IL during this
evening. Blustery ENE winds turning NNE will cause temps to fall
to upper teens by Galesburg by 5 pm and into the upper 20s to near
30F in southeast IL. Much colder lows overnight in the single
digits west of I-57 (wind chills getting down into the 5-10 below
range) and mid teens in southeast IL.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)
ISSUED AT 400 AM CST Sat Jan 19 2019

A lake effect band of light snow off Lake MI will get close to
Vermilion county late tonight into Sunday morning. A weak clipper
system will also dive southeast from the northern Plains into
central IL during Sunday afternoon and bring chances of light snow
and flurries, along with partly to mostly cloudy skies. Lighter
NNW winds expected on Sunday generally around 10 mph or less. Cold
highs Sunday in the teens in central IL and lower 20s in
southeast IL.

Canadian high pressure settles southward into the Great Lakes and
Ohio river valley by dawn Monday and brings dry and cold weather
to the area. Lows Sunday night of 0-5F above nw half of CWA and
5-10F sw half with southeast IL around 10F. Wind chills in the
single digits below zero and a few northern areas around 10 below
for wind chills. Highs Mon around 20F to lower 20s from I-74 ne
and mid to upper 20s in sw CWA with sw winds 8-16 mph with partly
to mostly cloudy skies. SE winds Mon night so not quite as cold
with lows in the upper teens from I-74 ne and 20-25F from Lincoln
sw.

The 00Z models continue to show low pressure ejecting ne out of
southeast CO and over nw IL/IL river valley either Tue night or
Wed deepening on which model you follow. GFS is faster model with
Ecmwf slower model. GFS and GEM models spread pcpn ENE into IL
during Tue morning, while Ecmwf model waits until Tue afternoon
for pcpn to arrive. If pcpn arrives during Tue morning, could be
cold enough for light mixed pcpn, with mainly rain Tue afternoon
into early Tue evening. Then colder air ushering in on back side
of low pressure system to change rain to light snow from nw to se,
with an snow accumulations a dusting to less than 1 inch. Milder
highs Tue in the upper 30s and lower 40s, with mid 40s by highway
50. Colder air returns Wed-Fri as an upper level trof digs into
the Midwest, with the coldest air from Fri to next Saturday and
lows in the single digits on Fri night, perhaps even below zero
northern CWA. Have chance of light snow or flurries from Thu night
thru Friday night with the deep upper level trof.

Climate Prediction Center 8-14 Day outlook for Jan 26 to Feb 1 has
70-85% chance of below normal temperatures over IL, so this winter
weather pattern looks to continue.

Issued at 559 AM CST Sat Jan 19 2019

Light snow at PIA and BMI will diminish during mid/late morning
while blowing snow will continue through the day as strong NE to
NNE winds 15-25 kts with gusts 25-35 kts prevail today. Light
mixed pcpn mixture along I-72 will change to light snow before
diminishing during late morning. Vsbys will range from 1-4 miles
into mid morning and mostly be MVFR by late morning and trend
toward VFR during the afternoon. Ceilings will range from 400-1400
ft today. Low clouds to scattered out from the west during mid to
late evening, though likely linger at CMI thru much of tonight
due to north winds off Lake Michigan. North to NNW winds to
diminish to 10-15 kts by late evening and overnight. A 1001 mb
surface low pressure over northeast AR that is causing the
precipitation this morning, to track to the central KY/TN border
by sunset today as it deepens to 994 mb, then deepen further to
992 mb low over southeast PA by 12Z/6 am Sunday.
