AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...
A strengthening low pressure system will bring an increasing
chance of showers to the region Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday
night. A cold front will move east across the region Wednesday,
leading to windy conditions and falling temperatures through the
day. High pressure and a drier airmass will build back into the
region for Thanksgiving.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Quick forecast update with just some minor changes -- an
adjustment to precipitation onset timing this evening and to
temperatures in the next few hours. While conditions are a
little cooler to start than previously expected, there is still
strong model agreement in max temps reaching the mid 50s to
around 60, with recent HRRR runs coming in slightly warmer than
that.

The main forecast concern heading into the next 24 hours remains
the potential for strong wind beginning tomorrow morning, and
this threat will be addressed in the next forecast update after
analysis of 12Z model data.

Previous discussion >
Trough entering the center part of the country today promotes
the intensification of a surface low over the Central Plains.
Ahead of the surface low, isentropic lift and warm-air advection
assist in the development of widespread mid and upper level
clouds. These move into the forecast area throughout the morning
and afternoon hours with temperatures climbing comfortably into
the mid to upper 50s and even lower 60s across the south. These
temperatures are aided by increasing southeasterly flow as
pressure fails occur to the west.

Into the early evening hours, high resolution models are in
fairly good agreement that a broad shield of light, to perhaps
moderate rain moves in from the southwest and continues into
the overnight hours. Slight chance thunder was added in to the
forecast despite the lack of surface instability. Some elevated
CAPE along with strong lift likely results in embedded thunder
within the broad shield of rain. A few elevated convective cells
are also possible throughout the overnight. Winds gradually
increase into the early morning hours with occasional wind
gusts of 30-40 mph beneath a blustery 925-850 mb low level jet
featuring 50-70 knot winds.

Toward the end of the near term, models indicate a possible
break in the heavier rain around 3-5 am before the cold front
moves through between 7-10 am. Another period of rain, albeit,
rather brief, is possible with the cold front passage along with
locally strong wind gusts.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
With the cold front sweeping through the area during the onset
of the short term, attention will be focused on the potential
for locally strong wind gusts approaching 40 mph. Behind the
front, a secondary low level jet forms on the southern side of
the synoptic low in response to the pressure couplet to the
north. As precipitation clears, stronger and broader gradient
winds will increase during the late morning and afternoon hours.
Confidence is still high that a wind advisory will be needed
for at least Wednesday afternoon. The onset of the advisory is a
little complicated given the potential for advisory level winds
during the early morning hours beneath the initial low level
jet. Those wind gusts should be more sporadic in nature as heavy
showers help mix gusty winds to the surface. For now, decided
to maintain the High Wind Watch as borderline high wind criteria
is still possible across extreme northwest zones. A possible
path to meeting high wind criteria would be if less clouds leads
to stronger mixing during the afternoon hours. Forecast
soundings indicate momentum transfer techniques could result in
wind gusts between 50-60 mph within a strongly mixed
environment. Confidence is still rather low on this occurring so
will continue to note the possible threat with the HWW. For the
rest of the area, a wind advisory will likely be issued during
the afternoon forecast package.

As the sun sets, winds slowly decrease below advisory criteria
during the evening hours, however, gusts to 40 mph are still
likely before midnight as 925 mb winds weaken.

Temperatures start very warm with high temperatures in the
upper 50s and lower 60s likely reached during the morning hours
ahead of the front. Cold air advection eventually works in
behind the front, dropping temperatures into the 40s by the
afternoon and into the 30s for overnight lows.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Models are in decent agreement in terms of the strength and
timing of synoptic scale systems through the extended forecast.
Have used the NBM for the sensible weather elements.

On Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, quiet weather is expected. High
pressure at the surface and aloft will build east into the Great
Lakes and the Ohio Valley. A mixture of lingering CAA
stratocumulus clouds and increasing mid and high level clouds
within the mid level ridge will keep skies partly to mostly
cloudy. It will be chilly with highs in the lower to mid 40s.

For Thursday night into Friday, the surface high will slowly
move east while the mid level ridge builds north into the Great
Lakes. Considerable mid and high level clouds will remain within
the "dirty" mid level ridge for mostly cloudy skies during this
period. It looks like some weak isentropic lift may bring a
chance of light rain to western areas late Friday afternoon.
After lows in the upper 20s to the lower 30s, highs will range
from the the lower 40s north to the upper 40s south.

For Friday night into Saturday, another potent storm system
will organize across the northern and central Plains. Ahead of
this system, strong moist ascent in the low to mid levels will
spread rain east across the region during this period. Lows in
the mid and upper 30s will warm into the 50s on Saturday as WAA
occurs across the region.

For Saturday night into Sunday, the aforementioned storm system
is expected to have occluded by this time with the surface low
pressure and its parent mid level circulation poised to move
east across the Great Lakes. An attendent cold front will then
push east across the region. Pcpn will be more showery in nature
Saturday night. It looks like there could be a lower chance of
showers on Sunday in the wake of the front with perhaps an
uptick later in the afternoon into the evening as vorticity
lobes rotate around the mid level circulation. Depending on
frontal timing, highs on Sunday may occur early (upper 40s to
lower 50s) with temperatures slowly falling during the day.

For Sunday night into Monday, the mid level circulation is
expected to move off to the east while high pressure at the
surface builds back into the region from the west by late
Monday. There will be a chance of snow showers early on with
decreasing clouds expected to occur through the day. Lows in the
upper 20s to the lower 30s will only warm into the upper 30s to
the lower 40s.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The potential for strong winds tomorrow is the greatest concern
for the TAF period, along with rain and MVFR conditions.

Generally favorable conditions will exist through the evening,
with gradually strengthening southerly winds this evening and
into the overnight hours. Rain showers are expected at all TAF
sites during the evening and overnight hours, along with a high
confidence forecast in MVFR ceilings and occasional MVFR
visibilities. Some patches of IFR ceilings appear possible, and
brief IFR visibilities may also be possible in heavier showers.
While a few thunderstorms also appear possible to occur,
coverage of thunder is not expected to be great enough to
warrant inclusion in the TAFs.

Winds will continue to increase overnight, with a period of LLWS
at all TAF sites generally after 06Z. The most significant wind
impact will be as a cold front moves through the area tomorrow
morning in the 12Z-15Z time frame, shifting winds to the
southwest, and bringing about an increase in gusts to greater
than 40 knots. Wind gusts of around 40 knots (or slightly
higher) should continue through the rest of the morning and into
the afternoon. Rain is expected to end after the front has moved
through, with at least a few hours of VFR ceilings before
additional MVFR clouds move in later in the day.

OUTLOOK...Gusty winds of 40 knots or higher will continue into
Wednesday afternoon and early evening. MVFR ceilings are also
expected Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning. MVFR
conditions are likely again late Friday and Saturday.
