The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a Beach
Hazards Statement, which is in effect through this evening.
* LOCATIONS...In South Carolina, Coastal Horry and Coastal
Georgetown. In North Carolina, Coastal Pender and Coastal New
Hanover.
* TIMING...For the Coastal Flood Advisory, from 9 AM this
morning to 2 PM EDT this afternoon. For the Beach Hazards
Statement, through this evening. For the High Rip Current
Risk, through this evening.
* COASTAL FLOOD IMPACTS...Minor street flooding occurs on the
sound-side of Carolina Beach, along Canal Drive from Starfish
Lane northward. Water gets into yards along the sound, but the
street flooding is mainly the result of salt water backing up
through the storm drains. Heavy rain at the time of high tide
exacerbates this problem.
* SURF ZONE IMPACTS...Very strong rip currents will be dangerous
to anyone who enters the surf. Also, a strong north to south
longshore will develop this afternoon due to strong winds.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Coastal Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides
will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.
There is a high risk of rip currents. Life threatening rip
currents are likely in the surf zone.
Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the
sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins, jetties
and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags and
signs.
If you become caught in a rip current, yell for help. Remain
calm, do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current, swim parallel to
shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to
swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.
Longshore currents can sweep swimmers and surfers into rip
currents, piers, jetties, and other hazardous areas. Often, if the
longshore current is strong enough, it will sweep swimmers off
their feet, making it difficult to return to shore.

will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.
There is a high risk of rip currents. Life threatening rip
currents are likely in the surf zone.
Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the
sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins, jetties
and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags and
signs.
If you become caught in a rip current, yell for help. Remain
calm, do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current, swim parallel to
shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to
swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

.SYNOPSIS...
Unsettled weather will be caused by a front stalled offshore.
Tropical moisture will increase ahead of Dorian on Wednesday
bringing an even better chance for rain. Dorian will then make
its closest approach Thursday bringing heavy rain and
potentially damaging winds. Cooler and dry weather is to follow
the hurricane.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
Main forecast concern is outside the next 36 hours related to
hurricane Dorian. Please monitor the forecast for mid to late week
regarding the potential impact from the storm across the Cape Fear
Region.
Stationary front just offshore will drift towards the coast today as
hurricane Dorian moves toward Florida. This change in position of
the front will bring some showers and thunderstorms to the coast
this morning and moving inland through the day. As cloud cover
increases along the coast with an easterly wind component bringing
in marine influenced air, temperatures along the coast today will be
slightly below normal in the low to mid 80s, with close to normal
temperatures inland in the upper 80s. Temperatures across the
entire forecast area will be closer to normal Monday with continued
chances for showers and thunderstorms with little movement from the
stationary frontal boundary.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Quiet weather expected through the period as front sits stalled
off the coast. It will call for some low end chance POPs along
the coast whereas lower values prudent inland. Low temperatures
both nights will be in the low 70s while the afternoon will warm
to the mid to upper 80s.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Tropical moisture will be increasing on Wednesday and high end
chance POPs continue. Should subsidence around Dorian be strong
enough however these values may be too high. Increasing wind and
rain Wednesday night as the storm approaches. The worst
conditions come on Thursday as Dorian makes its closest
approach. Friday and into the weekend slightly cooler and much
drier air will build into the area from the northwest allowing
nighttime lows to dip below 70.

.AVIATION /08Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Mainly VFR conditions will prevail overnight with an old front
stalled far off the coast of the Carolinas and a weak surface
ridge in place across the Carolinas. High cloudiness is likely
overnight as debris from convection across GA is carried back
across the Carolina coastal plains. Scattered convection is
expected to develop during the day Sunday, possibly bringing
brief periods of MVFR conditions at primarily the coastal
terminals.
Extended...Primarily VFR through the first part of the upcoming
week. Impacts from Hurricane Dorian could bring IFR/MVFR
conditions to the TAF sites later Wednesday into Thursday.
Confidence is low on timing and impacts from Dorian at this
time.

.MARINE...
Rough surf at area beaches with increasing chances for rip currents
and rough seas expected as swell from Dorian begins to arrive into
the offshore waters. Significant wave heights between 4 and 6 feet
expected with southeasterly swells around 5 feet between 12 and 14
seconds for the next 36 hours. Northeast winds along a stationary
boundary positioned offshore between 15 and 25 kts today, decreasing
into Monday at 10 to 15 kts.
Wind remains generally easterly Monday night into Tuesday in
response to high pressure to the north. This onshore fetch paired
with early swell energy from Dorian will call for Small Craft
Advisory that will remain up until tropical headlines get issued.
Later Tuesday night some of Dorian's wind field will impinge upon
mainly southern waters but this is more likely slated for Wednesday,
by which time the winds will be increasing apace. The worst
conditions are slated for Wednesday night into Thursday as Dorian
makes its closest approach.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Tidal ranges remain large after new moon. The astronomical tide
plus the long-term anomaly should trigger another round of
minor coastal flooding for the morning high tide for all area
coastlines.
High tides should become smaller over the next few days, but by
Tuesday and particularly Wednesday the potential exists for more
substantial flooding/surge events as hurricane Dorian begins to
move northward toward the Carolinas.
