THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING...
The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a Beach
Hazards Statement, which is in effect from 6 AM EDT Saturday
through Saturday evening.
* LOCATIONS...In South Carolina, Coastal Georgetown. In North
Carolina, Coastal New Hanover.
* TIMING...For the Coastal Flood Advisory, until 10 PM EDT this
evening. For the Beach Hazards Statement, from 6 AM EDT
Saturday through Saturday evening.
* COASTAL FLOOD IMPACTS...Soundside flooding in Garden City
Beach with water on Atlantic and Cypress avenues. Storm water
drains back up and flood Pine Avenue. Minor street flooding
occurs on the sound-side of Carolina Beach, along Canal Drive
from Starfish Lane northward. Water gets into yards along the
sound, but the street flooding is mainly the result of salt
water backing up through the storm drains. Heavy rain at the
time of high tide exacerbates this problem.
* SURF ZONE IMPACTS...Strong north to south longshore current will
develop Saturday due to strong northerly winds.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Coastal Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides
will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.
Longshore currents can sweep swimmers and surfers into rip
currents, piers, jetties, and other hazardous areas. Often, if the
longshore current is strong enough, it will sweep swimmers off
their feet, making it difficult to return to shore.

Beach with water on Atlantic and Cypress avenues. Storm water
drains back up and flood Pine Avenue. Minor street flooding
occurs on the sound-side of Carolina Beach, along Canal Drive
from Starfish Lane northward. Water gets into yards along the
sound, but the street flooding is mainly the result of salt
water backing up through the storm drains. Heavy rain at the
time of high tide exacerbates this problem.
* SURF ZONE IMPACTS...Very strong rip currents will be dangerous
to anyone who enters the surf. The threat of strong rip currents
will persist through much of the upcoming week as large swells
from Hurricane Dorian affect the area beaches.

There is a high risk of rip currents. Life threatening rip
currents are likely in the surf zone.
Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the
sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins, jetties
and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags and
signs.
If you become caught in a rip current, yell for help. Remain
calm, do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current, swim parallel to
shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to
swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

.SYNOPSIS...
Dry high pressure will remain across the area before scattered
showers push onshore from the Atlantic beginning Saturday. The
risk for rip currents at the beaches will increase this weekend
as Hurricane Dorian moves through the Bahamas. Wind and rain
from Dorian could reach the Carolinas late next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Surface high pressure across the Mid-Atlantic states will shift
offshore on Saturday. This should lead to gradually increasing
moisture in the low and mid levels of the atmosphere, with an
attendant increase in the potential for showers and a few
thunderstorms. An old stationary front draped offshore near the Gulf
Stream should wash out as the low-level wind becomes more uniformly
easterly with time.
Skies should remain mainly clear tonight inland, but marine
stratocumulus will begin to increase along the South Carolina coast
after midnight with a few showers perhaps sneaking onshore late.
Lows should run a little warmer than last night with 62-65 inland
and upper 60s to around 70 near the coast.
Better shower chances will develop during the day Saturday, mainly
across the Grand Strand and southern portion of the Pee Dee region.
Dry air will limit how far north and west clouds and showers will
develop, and I'm maintaining a dry forecast for Saturday across
Elizabethtown, Lumberton, Dillon, and Florence. Model precipitable
water forecasts show only an inch inland but nearly two inches at
the coast by the end of the day. Highs on Saturday should range from
around 90 well inland to the mid 80s near the coast. Shower chances
should continue into Saturday night, especially near the coast, with
lows moderating into the upper 60s-lower 70s.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Conditions Sunday similar to those of Saturday, with weak flow
aloft and onshore flow due to high pressure over the NE states.
Main difference is that a high moisture axis will spread
farther north into the area Sunday, resulting in higher PoPs
(30-60%...highest SE). Precip diminishes into Sunday night,
through some showers may linger near the coast. No direct land
impacts yet from Hurricane Dorian, aside from an elevated rip
current risk at the beaches.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Main focus in the long-term period is on Hurricane Dorian.
Still do not expect any big land impacts early in the week aside

day again especially near the coast due to prolonged onshore
flow and weak lift. Winds and precip chances then ramp up
Thursday into Thursday night. It is still too early to determine
exact impacts of this storm due to the uncertainty in its track
and it being several days away from impacting the area, so
please continue to follow the latest forecasts from the
National Hurricane Center. Overall, there is at least a moderate
chance of heavy rainfall and flooding attm, with more
uncertainty over the wind, storm surge, and tornado threats.

.AVIATION /00Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Predominantly VFR this TAF period as high pressure moves
offshore and an onshore push of moisture begins. Mostly clear
skies overnight with a few high clouds possible along the coast.
Chance of brief MVFR fog inland, particularly in NE SC, though
not really impressed with available moisture and model
soundings. Have included a couple hours of MVFR fog at KFLO.
Onshore flow tomorrow will increase moisture along the coast,
mainly in SC. Expect scattered to broken mid-clouds along the
coast tomorrow afternoon, quickly drying out as they move
inland. Have included VCSH at MYR/CRE terminals in the afternoon
where the greatest chance of rain is, though possible ILM will
see a storm or two as well. Light winds overnight become
northeasterly around 5-10 kts in the morning before veering to
easterlies in the afternoon, with increased winds and gusts at
the coast.
Extended...VFR. scattered showers beginning late Saturday could
bring brief MVFR visibility at times. Impacts from Hurricane Dorian
could bring IFR/MVFR conditions to the TAF Sites late in the day
Wednesday. Confidence is extremely low on timing and impacted
from Dorian.

.MARINE...
High pressure centered to our north across the Mid-Atlantic
states will shift offshore Saturday. A weak front stalled just east
of the Gulf Stream will shift toward land, increasing the potential
for showers and thunderstorms late tonight into Saturday. Local
winds should remain northeast to east at 10-15 kt.
Long-period forerunner swells ahead of Hurricane Dorian should reach
the coastal waters during the day Saturday. These 12 to 13 second
southeast swells will initially only run 1 foot, but should build to
2-3 feet by Saturday night. Combined with the local 5 second wind
chop, total seas should increase to around 4 feet Saturday night
with some 5-footers showing up late in the Cape Fear vicinity.
Hazardous marine conditions expected next week, both well ahead
of Hurricane Dorian, and with the storm itself regardless of
its exact track. With prolonged onshore fetch and increasing
swell, Small Craft Advisory conditions due to seas should
commence by Sunday, with seas out 20 nm continuing to waver
around 6 ft for the first half of the week with not much change
in the pattern. Winds mainly 10-20 kt. Winds and seas then
further increase by Thursday as Dorian approaches from the
south. Its exact track will dictate how severe marine conditions
become, so please continue to monitor the latest forecast.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
This month's New Moon occurred early this morning, and tidal ranges
will remain larger than average for the next couple of days. This
evening's astronomical high tide around 8 PM will be supplemented by
the long-term ocean level anomaly averaging around +0.75 feet,
producing total tides at the beaches 0.3 to 0.5 feet above flood
stage. Look for impacts similar to or slightly worse than those
observed yesterday evening. It's worth noting this flooding is in no
way related to Hurricane Dorian.
Along the tidal Cape Fear River near downtown Wilmington, another
round of minor coastal flooding should occur again during the 10:30
PM high tide. Additional tidal flooding should occur through the
weekend during the evening high tides.
