...Winter Storm late Saturday night into early Sunday...

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday night)
Issued at 300 PM CST Fri Mar 1 2019

A progressive shortwave trough over the Pacific will race eastward
impacting California tonight before moving over the Central Great
Basin and portions of the Southwest on Saturday. This same system
will bring increasing chances for snow to the area beginning late
Sat evening and continuing into Sunday morning before racing
eastward away from the area.

Meanwhile, low clouds have finally dissipated across south central
Kansas allowing temperatures to rebound while remaining well
below normal for early March. The front is progged to sink south
again tonight allowing the cold air to become more firmly
entrenched with highs struggling to climb above freezing much of
the area on Saturday, although southern KS may see highs at or
slightly above freezing.

The progressive shortwave trough mentioned above will emerge from
the Rockies Saturday evening with snow rapidly developing and
expanding in coverage as we move through the evening hours. The
snow may be heavy at times as the point sounding continue to
indicate very favorable depths to the snow-growth region with low
static stability in X-sections above the frontal zone. The biggest
limiting factor will be the progressive nature of the system with
only a brief window of 3 to 5 hours of where the bulk of the
accumulation is anticipated. We're still thinking qpf will land in
the .3 to perhaps .4 range while SLRs may rise into the 15-20:1
or higher during the height of the storm leading to a general 3-6
inches of accumulation. The better coupled forcing is expected
across our central KS counties or generally north of HWY 54 where
confidence is highest and a winter storm warning will be issued
there. Further south, a winter storm watch will remain in effect
and we'll wait for the system to come onshore later tonight and
make a decision on whether to issue a winter storm warning or
winter weather advisory across the southern tier of Kansas
counties where a general 2-4 inches is anticipated at this time.

Winds will increase in the wake of the system which will likely
result in a continuation of blowing snow across much of the area
on Sunday afternoon. This will likely drive apparent temperature
values well below zero and a wind chill headline will likely be
needed across much of the area where values will fall into the
15 to 20 below across some areas Sunday night into early Mon. As
sfc high pressure settles south during the early evening hours,
winds will quickly diminish and temperatures will plummet well
below zero across much of the area. There may be a period of mid
clouds possibly keeping minimum temperatures from plummeting, but
a better signal for that is expected to remain south and west of
our forecast area.

Monday...Arctic high pressure will be sprawled across the area
resulting in light winds and a continuation of below normal
temperatures with highs struggling to reach 20 in many locations.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Friday)

Moderating temperatures are anticipated at the start of the period
with highs approaching normal across southern Kansas as we move
toward the latter portion of the forecast as another vigorous
storm system approaches. This will bring increasing chances for
precipitation although phase/amplitude uncertainties remain
leading to lower confidence at this time.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Saturday afternoon)
Issued at 1152 AM CST Fri Mar 1 2019

For the 18z TAFs, went a little more pessimistic with the cloud
ceiling heights with continued trapped low-level moisture and
fairly weak flow around the region. Latest satellite imagery shows
much of south central and southeast Kansas still under the
overcast stratus deck. Expect that the cloud cover will linger
throughout much of the period, though may break briefly in
southeast Kansas and/or scour a bit this afternoon to SCT vs BKN
or OVC. A frontal passage this evening will flip winds around to
blow out of the northeast throughout the remainder of the period.
Scattered to overcast stratus should remain in place through 18z
Saturday.

may bring an additional chance of snow Wednesday or Thursday.

Sub-zero wind chill values are expected Sunday morning across
central and south-central Kansas. Sub-zero wind chill values are
then expected areawide Sunday night through Monday morning and
again Monday night through Tuesday morning. By Monday morning, wind
chill values will likely fall as low as 10 to 20 degrees below zero.
