Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Wichita KS 1150 PM CST Mon Nov 25 2019 ...Updated Aviation Discussion... .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday night) Issued at 307 PM CST Mon Nov 25 2019 A active weather pattern will be in store for the region for the remainder of this week. Current satellite water vapor imagery shows a strong weather system diving into the southwestern states this afternoon. This system will then eject out into the central plains during the day tomorrow. Precipitation in the form of snow or light freezing drizzle could affect mainly Lincoln, Russell, and Barton counties in central Kansas tomorrow morning. Otherwise a few high based rain showers will be possible Tuesday afternoon or even a couple weak thunderstorms ahead of strong upper forcing from approaching PV wave. A high wind watch is in affect for parts of south central Kansas as deeper mixing from this system looks to tap into the higher wind speeds aloft for Tuesday afternoon/evening, and could result in a few rogue wind gusts of 55 to 60 mph. A very intense surface low pressure will shift east of the region on Tuesday night. This will tighten up the pressure gradient along with a well mixed 1000-850mb layer supporting very strong west-northwest winds persisting through much of Tuesday night. A wind advisory has been hoisted across the entire region. Quiet weather will be on tap for Wednesday as we will be in between weather systems. A second weather system will develop over the eastern Pacific in dig over the western states for Wednesday into Thursday. A lead short wave looks to eject from this parent system on Thursday and bring a mix of winter precip and rain, as warmer moist air over-runs the cooler air. Some light snow will be possible for mainly central Kansas before a transition to all rain occurs for Thursday afternoon, as warmer air spreads northward across the region. .LONG TERM...(Friday through Monday) Issued at 307 PM CST Mon Nov 25 2019 Models show a deep upper trough over the southwestern states with rich Gulf of Mexico moisture streaming northward into Kansas on Friday. Standardized anomalies show precipitable water values running around 3 to 4 deviations above normal. This should give way to numerous showers and thunderstorms for Friday/Friday night which should shift east by early Saturday morning. A few embedded strong storms will be possible give the very strong wind shear across the region, along with some pockets of heavy rainfall. Another surge of colder air will spread southward for Saturday night into Sunday across Kansas with daytime highs likely below normal for Sunday and Monday. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Tuesday night) Issued at 1141 PM CST Mon Nov 25 2019 As a storm system continues to approach the area from the west, aviation-related weather concerns will increase over the next 24 hours. For the rest of the night/early morning, a surge of low- level moisture will make its way into southeast Kansas around 09z or so, first impacting KCNU and then quickly spreading north and west to impact the rest of south central central Kansas by early morning. A MVFR cloud deck is likely at all sites, though IFR level clouds will be possible in some area airports at times with cigs around 800 feet or so. Meanwhile, as the system continues to approach, some light snow or drizzle could impact portions of central Kansas during the morning, though confidence remains low at this time so have largely only included VCSH for now. By midday, any precipitation will likely change over to rain as chances increase. Perhaps the most significant aviation impact beginning tomorrow afternoon and lasting throughout the remainder of the TAF forecast period will be very gusty southwesterly winds that will pick up significantly around 21z or so. At this time, the strongest winds are expected in the vicinity of KICT and KHUT initially before spreading eastward. Gusts within the 35-40kt range will certainly be possible with a few rouge gusts of even higher magnitude not out of the question. These gusty winds will gradually become more westerly and then northwesterly and stick around throughout the evening before finally falling below advisory criteria by around 06z Wednesday. The highest potential for low- level wind shear looks to be in southeast Kansas tomorrow evening, but will continue to monitor models and update as needed in later issuances. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 307 PM CST Mon Nov 25 2019 A red flag warning has been hoisted across south central and southeast Kansas for Tuesday afternoon/evening, as dry air and increasing wind speeds from western Oklahoma push into the region. Catastrophic Grassland Fire danger is possible especially for south central Kansas where very dry air will combine with high wind gusts 55 to 60 mph during the late afternoon/evening hours. Meanwhile winds will switch to the west/northwest for Tuesday night, as surface low pressure moves away from the region.
