.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure over the Great Lakes will move north and east into
Ontario and Quebec tonight. This will spread an area of rain and
freezing rain into New England tonight before a strong cold
front arrives on Friday. Ahead of this front...temperatures will
warm dramatically early Friday before falling just as fast in
the afternoon and evening as very strong westerly winds
overspread the region. The windy and colder conditions will
continue through Saturday before winds diminish on Sunday. The
next widespread precipitation event arrives late Tuesday with a
plowable snowfall possible.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
108 AM Update: Forecast in good shape early this morning.
Matched up with overnight temp/dewpoint trends...but no changes
needed to ice/advisory area as rain becomes steadier/heavier
across the region.

Update...
Have updated the forecast based on latest mesoscale model
solutions, surface and radar observations. Main batch of
precipitation continues to press eastward from western New
England this evening. Additional light drizzle or periods of
light rain will continue over portions of Maine and eastern New
Hampshire.

Have issued an SPS until 06Z to allow for the potential of
patchy freezing rain reaching southern interior Maine and
southern interior New Hampshire as readings remain in the lower
to mid 30s. Most of this area has already been treated and
temperatures should very slowly be on the rebound upwards when
the precipitation picks up in intensity.

Mesoscale probabilistic guidance continues to show the threat
for freezing rain over northern and central sections for a good
portion of the night. Some sleet remains possible as well.

Prev Disc...
Precipitation continues to move eastward from upstate New York
this evening, embedded in a very moist flow. Air and soil
temperatures remain near or just above 32 degrees over interior
locations. Still expected some freezing rain overnight in
central and northern areas per latest headlines in effect.

Have made minor modifications to surface temperatures and dew
points per latest observational trends.

Prev Disc...
High Impact Weather Potential: Freezing rain expected over some
inland areas with other concern being the potential for dense
fog.

Pattern: Early afternoon water vapor imagery reveals a progressive
trough dominating the pattern across much of the United States...and
approaching the northeastern states as of this writing.  There is a
modest connection to the Gulf of Mexico ahead of this feature which
has resulted in a broad area of precipitation extending from the
Ohio Valley and Great Lakes south through the Mississippi valley.
Surface low pressure associated with this trough is reaching the
southern portion of the western Great Lakes and will continue to
ride north and east to a position just south and east of James Bay
by daybreak Friday.  Precipitation chances ahead of this low and
it/s associated cold front is our primary forecast challenge through
tonight /and into early Friday/ with precipitation type concerns as
well.

Through this evening: Drizzle has largely ended this
afternoon...with just some residual fog over southern NH and far
southwestern ME. Expect little change through 8pm...with very
gradual evening cooling likely allowing for some expansion to
the fog and a re-introduction of drizzle. 8pm temperatures look
to be at or just above freezing throughout pretty much all of
the CWA except perhaps a few degrees cooler over the Maine
mountains.

Tonight: Low pressure will be centered over lower Michigan and
riding north and east...pushing a warm front north into New England
as an occluded front nears from the west.  Somewhat unique is a weak
wave of low pressure along the warm front /now analyzed south of New
England/ that will ride north in tandem with the front and act to
lock easterly flow throughout much of the forecast area through the
night.  The most impressive PWAT anomalies /+6 sigma!/ will ride
north of the area...but the broad warm advection pattern along with
PWATs moving above one inch should have no problem bringing an area
of rain through the region overnight.  Temps aloft will be plenty
warm enough to preclude much if any any frozen precipitation...
so PTYPE concerns center around surface temperature evolution.
Temperatures this evening will not have much room to fall given
saturated llevel profiles...but continued east/northeasterly
gradient should allow much of the foothills and mountains to sit
near or below the freezing mark as rain arrives from the west.
Therefore, a period of freezing rain is expected here. Given
the fact that near term high resolution guidance has a pretty
good handle on temperatures...a consensus blend of this guidance
suggests increasing hourly temperatures just a tad overnight
from what was inherited. Also...precipitation arrival has been
delayed a bit...to after midnight. For these two reasons...have
trimmed portions of the advisory over southwest NH and midcoast
Maine.

Fog: With the surface layer stubborn to warm...and more
significant warming/moistening aloft...sounding profiles become
increasingly supportive for fog development...and as surface
dewpoints move to around or just above freezing...this will help
as well. Will continue areas of fog mention through the night
and monitor for locally dense fog especially in the foothills.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
High Impact Weather Potential: Strong winds developing in the
wake of a departing cold front with much colder air arriving
Friday night.

Friday: Showers /with some embedded freezing rain in the western
Maine mountains/ taper off from west to east by 10am...with a
brief period of spring-like temperatures expected before robust
cold advection brings this to an end Friday night. T9s will be
above 5C over southern areas at 12Z /and near +10C at H8...which
represents about a +3 sigma departure from climatology/...with
a race between developing sunshine and arriving cold air
determining how warm we/ll get. Inherited forecast has far
southern Maine and southeastern NH /ASH-MHT-PSM/ reaching into
the lower 50s and this looks very reasonable. Elsewhere...40s
are expected with temperatures falling in the afternoon...and by
evening along the coast. Initial surge of cold advection
arrives Friday afternoon immediately behind departing cold
front. Winds at the top of the deepening mixed layer reach
around 40kts according to model soundings suggesting a few gusts
to around 40 mph are possible late in the day.

Friday Night: Gradient remains impressive overnight as a secondary
cold front pushes through the area with this additional surge of
low level cold advection helping to maintain good mixing and
thus a continuation of strong and gusty winds. Thus...expect
winds 15 to 25 mph to continue through the night with gusts over
35 mph. Ongoing cold advection will help drive modified arctic
air back into the region overnight...with lows in the single
digits north and teens south with the winds bringing wind chills
back below zero throughout the forecast area.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The initial part of the forecast period will be focused on the
strong winds which are expected to mix to the surface coincident
with a secondary cold frontal passage Saturday. Winds are
expected to increase to near advisory/advisory level beginning
around 10 AM with it becoming noticeably gustier much earlier.
An advisory means that gusts to 46 mph or more are forecast, and
this should not be hard to achieve across almost all of the
forecast area. Sustained winds will be strongest through the
afternoon and begin to decrease by the evening. We are expecting
scattered power outages from the winds.

CAA associated with the system will make a stark difference
between highs Friday and Saturday, with a nearly 30 to 20 degree
F drop from north to south. This combined with the wind will
keep wind chills around -10 to -15F across the mountains during
the day. As temps drop during the night and winds let up, the
"feels like" temperature will largely remain the same as it did
during the day.

Apart from the winds the weekend will be benign with high
pressure staying mostly centered to our SW. A weak wave may
bring some light snow showers to the southern counties of NH and
the SW coast of Maine, but without return flow there will be
little moisture to work with. Therefore not expecting much in
the way of accumulations. This will be followed by another high
pressure area which will help reinforce cold air at the surface.

The next weather-maker approaches Tuesday night into Wednesday.
Surface low pressure should form off the mid-Atlantic Tuesday
night and track northeast. Have gone with the slightly closer
European track which will keep much of the cold air locked in
with isobars kinking along the higher terrain. Precipitation
type could be messy along the coast, however for the interior
snow looks like the best bet. The precip will erode from the
southwest beginning Wednesday afternoon with showers hanging on
for the peaks and the Midcoast a little longer. Colder air
arrives for Thursday night.

.AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Short Term...

Summary: A strong storm system will lift north of the region
tonight and on Friday...with rain continuing at the terminals
ahead of a strong cold front that will bring drying conditions
upon strong west and northwesterly winds beginning Friday
afternoon and continuing through Saturday.

Restrictions: Lots of LIFR/IFR out there as of this writing
with rain arriving from the west. Do not expect any freezing
precipitation through tonight...but with rain becoming
steadier/heavier...VSBYS may lower some with VLIFR possible
particularly around daybreak Friday. Low CIGS/VSBYS in rain will
continue through the morning with rapid improvement to VFR
during the afternoon. VFR conditions will dominate the terminals
for the remainder of the forecast period through Saturday.

Winds: Winds will remain generally light easterly through the
early morning hours before shifting south and then west-
southwest on Friday...strengthening rapidly to 20g30kts during
the afternoon and continuing from the west through Friday
night. With strengthening mixing on Saturday...gusts over 40kts
from the northwest will be possible.

LLWS: A period of LLWS is looking increasingly likely as winds
aloft strengthen immediately ahead of the passage of the surface
cold front on Friday...with a roughly 3 hour period of 1.5-2kft
winds of 35-45kts with winds still below 10kts at the surface.

Long Term...

VFR with diminishing winds Saturday night into Sunday.

Sunday night into Monday there may be light snow affecting all
terminals except for PWM, AUG and RKD. This may cause some MVFR
ceilings but they will improve quickly Monday morning as showers
diminish. Otherwise VFR Monday and Monday night.

Tuesday the next surge of precipitation moves in gradually from
the SW with -SN the dominant p-type. This will cause a prolonged
period of lowering ceilings/visibilities through the day and
night Tuesday as precipitation increases.

.MARINE...
Short Term...

Have converted Casco Bay Gale Watch to a warning with this
package as guidance is providing increased confidence for a
period of 35-40kt gusts beginning late Friday and continuing
through Saturday. Prolonged gale warning in effect for this
period with light winds expected between now and Friday morning.

Long Term...Gales continue in strong cold air advection from the
NW through early Sunday morning before decreasing to SCA levels.
Casco Bay will drop down faster than Penobscot or the outer
waters. The bays continue to drop to below 25 kts during the day
Sunday but the outer waters remain around 25 kts through Monday
night.

There will be a quiet period on the waters until very early
Wednesday when seas and winds begin to pick up again.
