.SYNOPSIS...
Northwest flow and associated upslope moisture will diminish today
through tonight. Northwest winds will then strengthen once again
Wednesday through Wednesday night behind a trough of low pressure
moving off the East Coast. Weak surface high pressure will briefly
return on Thursday before another low pressure system approaches
from the Deep South or Gulf Coast region on Friday, along with a
quick shot of moisture. Dry high pressure is expected for Saturday,
but with moisture gradually returning late in the weekend, and
conditions becoming quite unsettled early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1228 PM Tuesday: Just some high thin cirrus moving overhead
for the afternoon. Temp trends will be adjusted for obs. Fcst in
relatively good shape.

Otherwise, the deep upper low will continue to lift NE and off
the New England Coast today and tonight. As it does, heights will
rise and the pattern will flatten over the fcst area as a short
wave ridge moves overhead. This will be brief, however, as another
upper trof digs down over the Great Lakes and towards our area by
early Wednesday. At the sfc, the low off the New England Coast will
eventually drift farther north and east and off the coast of Nova
Scotia. Profiles will continue to dry out over our area as broad
high pressure gradually slides into the region from the west and
weak lee troffing sets up over the CWFA during the afternoon. This
will cause low-lvl winds to back to a more SWLY direction, except
for the higher terrain, where they should remain predominately
NWLY. High temps are expected to remain in the low 50s again today
across the lower terrain, but should be about a category warmer
(compared to yesterday) across the higher terrain. Lows tomorrow
morning will be a few degrees warmer than this morning, but still
just below climatology.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 220 AM EST Tuesday: With a stout upper jet arriving in the
northwest flow on Wednesday, and continued upslope flow at lower
levels, some mountain wave cirrus could form along and east of the
Blue Ridge. Also, anticipate the return of a tightening pressure
gradient and stronger associated northwest flow over the high
terrain on Wednesday. The 850 mb winds could reach 45 to 50 kt at
times along the northern Blue Ridge late in the day. An HWO mention
for the northern tier could be warranted for possible Wind Advisory
conditions Wed/Wed night.

Zonal flow will set up over the area on Thursday, with a shallow
ridge at lower levels. Winds will slacken as the pressure gradient
weakens, and temperatures should warm to at least a category
above climo throughout.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 230 AM EST Tuesday: A southern stream open wave will move from
the lower MS River Valley to the southern Appalachians on Friday,
and then quickly exit off the southeast coast Friday night. A modest
amount of returning moisture associated with this system may briefly
intersect lingering cold air across the mountains Friday morning,
but not sufficiently to produce any accumulating snow showers,
especially with low levels slow to moisten up while any near-
freezing mountain temperatures are still in place. The transitory
moisture on Friday never gets terribly deep, but forcing ahead of
the wave should be sufficient to warrant chance PoPs for daytime
Friday in most areas. Temperatures should cool a few degrees from
Thursday given the clouds and possibly light rain.

Dry high pressure, but with chillier thicknesses, will set up over
the region on Saturday. Heights falling again to the west will then
permit moisture to return to the southern Appalachians late Sunday
through Sunday night. Uncertainty increases quickly on the extent of
any deeper height falls back across the central CONUS early next
week, but a period of rather unsettled weather could get ushered
into the area starting early in the week, with some heavy rain
becoming possible, at some point.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: VFR through the period, with only some high
clouds to contend with this afternoon and tonight. Wind direction
will be a bit tricky through the afternoon at KCLT as a lee
trof sets up, and there might be occasional gusts at some of the
sites. Wind should go light SW after sunset. The wind should pick
up during Wednesday morning as the pressure gradient increases,
resulting in gusty NW winds at least at KAVL, possibly at other
sites Wednesday afternoon. At KAVL, there could be a time period
around daybreak with a low level wind shear, but that will end
with deeper mixing after 15Z.

Outlook: Mostly dry/VFR conditions are expected thru Thursday. A
weakening low pressure system may bring light precip and brief
restrictions on Friday.
