.SYNOPSIS...
Abundant moisture will cross the region from the west this
morning in advance of an approaching cold front. The cold front will
pass through the area late today through this evening, with much
colder air arriving behind the front. Northwest flow moisture and
gusty winds will set up behind the front tonight through Monday and
linger into Tuesday. After brief mid-week dry high pressure, another
low pressure system will arrive from the west late in the week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 310 AM: The deep cyclone centered over Iowa early this morning
will deepen further as it swings over IL by late morning and then
IN/OH by evening. The deeper moisture band ahead of the associated
cold front is starting to move across the western Carolinas and
northeast Georgia this morning. The best upper jet forcing should
cross the region through 12Z, and this will be coincident with the
passing of the 50+ kt low level jet and associated 35 to 40 kt of
sfc to 1 km bulk shear. Fortunately, surface-based instability has
been quite limited, but could rise modestly to 100 J/kg of sbCAPE
through daybreak across the southern tier. Thus, the QLCS severe
threat will likely peak from now through 12Z for the bulk of the
area, possibly persisting until around 14Z along/east of I-77. Rapid
pre-frontal drying in the strongly mixed SW to W flow will then
occur this afternoon before the strong, cold fropa arrives this
evening.
The stacked low pressure system will wobble east across the central
Appalachians tonight and then through the Virginias on Monday.
Deepening northwest flow moisture will return tonight, with the
northwest flow snow machine likely getting started up this evening
and then intensifying through daybreak Monday. This deep, upslope
moisture will continue through the day on Monday, and the northwest
flow pressure gradient will rapidly increase as well. At this point,
expect Winter Weather Advisories along the TN border counties of the
NC mountains, with a high elevation Winter Storm Warning for Swain
where Smokies snow totals could reach a foot in the extended upslope
snow event. Wind Advisory wording will be used in the Winter product
where snow accumulations are expected, with a standalone Wind
Advisory for NC mountain areas along and east of the Blue Ridge
escarpment. The hazards will be permitted to run tonight through
Monday night.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 315 AM Sunday: Northwest flow moisture and associated snowfall
will begin to gradually diminish Monday night, and then dwindle
further through Tuesday. Upper flow will flatten on Tuesday with the
departing upper low lifting east of New England, but with additional
height falls upstream from the Great Lakes to the Midwest.
Anticipate temperatures to continue a couple of categories below
climo Tuesday afternoon, and slightly below climo Tuesday night.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 320 AM Sunday: The base of the next northern tier trough will
move through the region on Wednesday, with another shot of
relatively stout northwest gradient flow setting up into Wednesday
night. Expect little more than passing clouds with the trough as
deep moisture will be cut off from the Gulf. Temperatures should
rebound about a category over Tuesday values.
Brief ridging will set up over the southeast on Thursday before a
southern stream system lifts quickly east across TX/OK and then
dampens as it reaches the southern Appalachians on Friday. The
moisture return Thursday night into Friday could intercept some
morning lows around freezing in the mountains before temps warm up,
but widespread mixed precipitation around daybreak seems unlikely.
Temps should warm sufficiently for the bulk of any Friday
precipitation to be liquid throughout. Better ridging and dry high
pressure will then return from the west on Saturday following fropa.

.AVIATION /09Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
At KCLT and Elsewhere: Deep moisture well ahead of a sharp,
approaching cold front will cross the terminal area through mid-
morning. All manner of low IFR to VFR, at times, cigs will be
observed as the heavier showers pass, with thunder quite possible at
times across the Upstate SC TAF sites, and perhaps even KCLT toward
12Z. Rapid drying will then develop from the WSW just ahead of the
front, with mixing permitting gusty SW winds to develop late this
morning through the afterrnoon. Winds will turn more sharply
northwest this evening with fropa, and then northwest flow moisture
will arrive in the mountains. For now, will keep any lower cigs and
snow showers northwest of KAVL through 06Z Monday, but this could be
added soon.
Outlook: Moisture will continue in the northwest flow across the
mountains through Monday night, but with drying east of the
mountains. Anticipate windy conditions developing behind the front
through the early part of the week, especially on Monday. Drier
conditions will persist during the mid-week.

Isolated thunderstorms will develop over the southern Appalachians late tonight ahead of an approaching cold front. Cloud-to-ground lightning and locally heavy rainfall will be the main threats with any thunderstorms. However, any lines of showers and thunderstorms that form will also have the potential to produce very gusty winds. Some nuisance flooding may also develop in flood prone areas due to the locally heavy rainfall, especially from Graham to Macon Counties. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday. Isolated thunderstorms will continue to be possible early Sunday morning before the cold front moves east of the area by noon. A strong low pressure system will pass to our north and move a robust cold front through the area on Sunday. In the front's wake, colder air will return late Sunday into Monday setting up favorable conditions for accumulating northwest flow snow and slippery road conditions across the higher terrain.
