.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front approaches from the west tonight, and crosses the
western Carolinas and northeast Georgia on Wednesday. Fair and quiet
conditions return for Thanksgiving Day and Friday, with another cold
front expected to impact our area this weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 330 AM EST Wednesday: With this fcst package, a Wind Advisory
has been issued for the NC mountains and portions of the northern
foothills, and will go into into effect beginning at 12 PM today,
continuing through into Thursday.

With temperatures above normal this morning, conditions are fairly
quiet and cloudy, with the exception of patchy drizzle in some
locations, as latest radar imagery depicts some weak returns moving
across the area. Back to the west, a swath of showers and even a
thunderstorm or two stretches from the lower TN Valley up through
into the OH Valley ahead of an approaching cold front that is
currently just west of the MS River Valley. Initially located over
the central Plains, sfc low pressure and it's associated closed
upper low will continue to propagate northeastward into the Great
Lakes region today, eventually driving it's associated cold front
through the FA this evening. PoPs gradually increase from west to
east through the morning hours, with precipitation not expected to
reach the I-77 corridor until later this morning/early this
afternoon. Will note, have kept higher PoPs across the western
portions of the FA due to upsloping effects. Confidence on coverage
of showers across the eastern portions of the FA remains low given
the less notable forcing. Expect rainfall to taper off this evening
with the front, as the next weather item of interest becomes the
winds. Precipitation will fall as all rain as temperatures remain
above normal.

Per latest guidance, SW winds will begin to pick up later this
morning ahead of the front, gusty at times. However, behind the
front, model guidance continues indicate increasing gusty winds as
CAA infiltrates into the area, especially at the higher elevations.
Stronger winds with this system look to remain just north of the
area, but nonetheless, with latest model analysis and the slight
possibility of a mountain wave, a Wind Advisory has been issued for
the NC mountains and portions of the northern foothills. This
advisory will go into effect beginning at 12 PM today, and continue
through into Thursday.

Otherwise, conditions will remain dry and quiet for tonight, as
clouds decrease, sfc high builds in, and upper ridge begins to
amplify over the central CONUS. Min temperatures late tonight into
early Thursday will fall just a few degrees above normal.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 213 AM EST Wednesday: Apart from ongoing wind concerns
over the NC mtns/foothills on Thursday morning, the latter half
of the week should be relatively quiet. The upper anticyclone
camped out over the Gulf of Mexico will build an upper ridge axis
that remains to our west through Friday night. Those developments
will basically lock in high pressure that will control our weather
through the short range period. One interesting detail will be the
temps, which might be a category lower on Friday because we lose
the strong downslope warming that keeps temps close to normal on
Thursday. By Friday night, the next big storm will be taking shape
over the High Plains. Closer to home, the concern is a developing
warm front that is expected to activate over the Cumberland Plateau
region, perhaps nipping the nrn mountains of NC. Will include a
small chance of precip there early Saturday morning. Fortunately,
temps should be just warm enough to keep it all liquid.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 320 AM EST Wednesday: The operational GFS and ECMWF remain
remarkably consistent from one run to the next with the handling
of a powerful upper low moving past to our north and raising the
potential for a NW Flow Snow event to start the next week, yet the
GEFS also remains consistent in saying that it is NOT a done deal,
at least not yet based on plume diagrams for Asheville and Boone,
where QPF looks underwhelming to say the least. But...before we
get there...we'll have to deal with the front end of this system,
which looks very much like our frontal passage today. Moisture and
forcing should spread eastward and into our region on Saturday, with
precip likely moving through Saturday night and Sunday morning,
with the cold front passage during the middle of the day. The
passage is less-than-ideal for thunderstorm chances, but if it
slips to later in the day, we could have some weak instability to
go with the strong shear shown by the guidance. Still expecting a
sizable break in the action between the frontal passage and the
arrival of the moisture wrapping around the upper low, so
precip chances were fine-tuned down below slight chance for
Sunday evening before quickly ramping back up along the TN
border. By that time, the cold air will have reached the NC
mountains. Which brings us back to the NW flow potential Sunday
night and Monday. The guidance continues show a strong
indication that we will have all the ingredients for NW flow
snow along the high elevations of the TN border, including
moisture up above 700 mb for a brief time centered on daybreak
Monday with the passage of a short wave and a brief connection
to Great Lakes moisture for a time on Monday morning. Still lots
of details to work out here, but suffice to say we will be
keeping an eye on the potential for our first snow event over
parts of the mtns for the start of the new work week. The
potential should wane by Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, east of the
mtns, the weather should be quiet but seasonally cold with
temps closer to normal for January.

.AVIATION /09Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: With VFR currently prevailing at all TAF
sites, a cold front will continue to push towards the area this
morning and eventually move through the FA later today. As a result,
expect gradually lowering cigs, areas of fog, and -SHRA/VCSH
beginning later this morning ahead of this system, with MVFR/IFR
flight restrictions persisting into the afternoon hours. Conditions
will gradually improve to VFR late this afternoon/early this
evening, with improving cigs and precipitation gradually tapering
off from west to east this afternoon/evening. However, with the
tightened pressure gradient, expect SW winds to become gusty, with
sustained winds 10 to 12 kts and higher gusts nearing 20 kts. LLWS
is expected at KAVL beginning later this morning, continuing through
this evening. Gusts will subside around 00Z.

Outlook: Expect VFR conditions for Thanksgiving Day, with another
weather system expected this weekend.
