.SYNOPSIS...
A cool and wet pattern will persist until a cold front crosses
our area from the west this evening.  Behind the front, dry high
pressure will spread over the region and linger through Thursday.
Another front is expected to move through the forecast area late
Friday into early Saturday. Another low pressure and front arrives
to start next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 320 AM EST Tuesday: Tricky forecast today with lingering cold
air damming over the area ahead of an approaching strong cold front.
Rain and drizzle will continue this morning as isentropic lift and
deep moisture move across the area. Dense fog has already formed
from Laurens to Elberton. Will issue a Dense Fog Advisory for these
areas. May see dense fog elsewhere depending on how the wedge
boundary moves through the morning. Will address adding any counties
as needed.

Strong forcing develops as an upper trough approaches the area today
and goes slightly negatively tilt. Isentropic lift will continue
ahead of the front keeping precip over the area as the wedge
boundary moves north toward the I-85 corridor. Convection associated
with the cold front moves into the mountains by early afternoon, to
the middle of the forecast area by mid to late afternoon, then
across the I-77 corridor by early evening. Guidance is now showing
more in the way of surfaced based and elevated instability as this
convection moves through. The highest will be south of I-85 but
positive values move into the I-85 corridor. Bulk shear will be very
strong as will 0-1 km helicity. Effective shear is limited to mainly
south of I-85. This is the area where instability and shear may
overlap enough to produce a severe QLCS storm. Of course, everything
will have to come together perfectly for this to develop, but chance
of general thunder is higher. 24-hour qpf will generally range from
1-2.5 inches across the western third of the area (primarily the
mtns), but this won't be enough to support anything more than a very
marginal/highly localized hydro threat.

The temp forecast will again be quite tricky, and will depend upon
how far north the remnant CAD boundary is able to retreat prior to
the arrival of the cold front late in the day. Warm sector
temperatures will increase well into the 60s, possibly as high as 70
across the far southern Piedmont. Meanwhile, locations that are last
to see erosion (i.e., northern foothills/Blue Ridge area) will
struggle to reach the lower 50s.

There will be some lingering showers behind the line of convection
but this should all move east before midnight. There may even be
some snow mixing in at the higher elevations as cold air moves in
before the moisture dissipates. The bigger story for the mountains
will be the increasing wind gusts. A very deep layer of strong winds
move into the mountains during the evening and continue through the
night. Good cold advection and pressure rises will allow these winds
to be realized at the surface. Right now, it looks like warning
level winds will be limited to the higher elevations of the northern
mountains with advisory level winds lower. Advisory level winds will
also be likely across all elevations of the French Broad and Pigeon
River valley counties into the Blue Ridge sections of the foothills.
Expect advisory level winds over the high elevations of the rest of
the NC mountains. Lows will be near normal west and up to 5 degrees
above normal east where colder air will be delayed.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 330 AM EST Monday: Dry weather is on tap Wednesday into
Thursday with dry northwest flow continuing across the region into
Wednesday evening before gradually backing to the southwest in
advance of the next frontal system. The main story in the short term
will be the winds. The descending portion (left entrance in this
case) of a strong 160 kt jet streak associated with the upper trough
will pass overhead during the day Wednesday and is the driving
mechanism for driving strong winds from aloft (80+kt at 700 mb!)
towards the surface. Strong, gusty and potentially damaging winds
will likely continue through Wednesday afternoon as a result. A high
wind warming will be posted for the northern mountains and other
mountain elevations above 3500 feet as a result. Weaker, but still
advisory level winds are likely across the rest of the mountains and
NC foothills where a wind advisory will be posted shortly. The
strong wind and recent rainfall may cause isolated downed trees and
powerlines, especially across higher mountain elevations. Highs will
be near seasonal norms with highs generally 50-60 despite weak cold
air advection. Return flow Thursday will slowly generate increasing
mid to high clouds with warm air advection rebounding temps above
normal with the largest increase in temps across the mountains.
Thursday evening or night will mark the return of a more active and
unsettled pattern. An upper trough rotating through the Great Lake
is expected to push a weakening cold front through the region
Thursday night into Friday morning. With the upper level support
removed well to the north, currently expected limited influx of
moisture from the Gulf of Mexico as well as synoptic lift. Rainfall
intensities and amounts continue to diminish from previous forecasts
as a result with most areas expected to see less than a half of an
inch.

A more pronounced negative PNA pattern looks to set up Friday
into Saturday with fast and relatively weak disturbances being
ejected from a deepening trough over the West Coast. The first in a
series of disturbance rides broad and fast southwesterly flow over
the region to follow quickly on the heals from Friday's cold front,
overspreading moisture increasing moisture, clouds and rain chances
late Friday and continuing into Saturday. Rainfall amounts look
meager at this point, largely owing to the fast paced nature of the
system. Despite cloudy conditions prevailing much of the day Friday
and Saturday, the mild air mass of Pacific origin will support above
normal highs in the 50s to mid 60s.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 130 AM EST Tuesday: The weather in the medium range will be
quite unsettled and models are not in any agreement on the timing of
these systems. Models are in fairly good agreement on a broad 500mb
trough stretching across the nation late in the weekend and to start
the new week.  Also there will be a stationary from somewhere near
the Gulf coast by Monday.  The GFS and EC are in fair agreement with
the development of lows forming over the central Gulf moving toward
the Appalachians early next week. The timing of those lows are
several hours off.  The GFS has 200 to 500 CAPE Sunday afternoon
from near Chattanooga to southern Georgia while the EC has no
instability at that time.

Low pressure should be moving away from the Carolina coast Saturday
evening while more low pressures form to our west and approach from
the west and SW. The EC give us a break with a brief dry period
Sunday night  to Monday morning as high pressure builds down from
the north. On the GFS the brief dry spell is Monday afternoon. Seems
Tuesday and Wednesday will be wet with several lows coming up out of
the Gulf. However, that is a week away and likely will change over
the next few days.

Temperatures have trended up at least a degree or two from Sunday to
Monday night as we will be increasingly on the warm side of the
track of the lows. The center of the colder high pressure may be
passing east across the Great Lakes Monday night.

.AVIATION /09Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Widespread IFR to LIFR cigs early this
morning with MVFR to IFR vsby. Expect LIFR to VLIFR vsby and cigs
around daybreak. Rain and drizzle will also continue through the
morning. As the cold front approaches during the afternoon, a line
of heavier SHRA and isolated TSRA will cross the area, followed by
rapid improvement in cigs thereafter. Guidance in better agreement
so included PROB30 where chance of thunder is better. Winds will
generally be light tonight, E to ESE, but pick up tomorrow during
the day. As the front approaches, winds will veer SW and WSW,
picking up in speed. Gusty conditions will continue past the end of
the period.

Outlook: Dry high pressure and improved conditions will persist
through Thursday. Another cold front and associated restrictions
will arrive on Friday.
