Area Forecast Discussion

LATEST UPDATE...
Synopsis/Discussion/Hydro

.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 325 PM EST Mon Jan 28 2019

- Widespread snow will transition to lake effect snow bands through
  tonight

- Brutal cold will spread across the area later Tuesday and linger
  into Thursday

- Potentially life threatening wind chills of 25 to 40 below
expected Tuesday night into Wednesday night

- Milder over the weekend and wintry mix possible early next week

&&

.DISCUSSION...(This evening through next Monday)
Issued at 325 PM EST Mon Jan 28 2019

We will start the transition from the headlines for the system snow
today, to the lake effect/brutal cold headlines with the forecast
package this afternoon. We will leave the ongoing headlines for the
snow today almost as is, with the exception of adding Barry, Eaton,
and Calhoun counties to the warning with upcoming lake effect
expected. We will then add a Wind Chill Warning for most of the
eastern half of the area that will be valid from late Tuesday
through much of Thursday.

We are seeing the heavier snow and worst conditions starting to exit
the area this afternoon, except for areas north of I-96 where the
pivot point of the system will be found. The sfc low is now just
entering the far SW corner of Lower Michigan. We are seeing a brief
period of some light freezing drizzle on the back edge of the snow
where the dry slot is moving through. We expect that the freezing
drizzle will not last long based on upstream observations to our
west behind the low as the DGZ resaturates. Areas up north under the
deformation band will see another couple of inches of snow before
the system snow moves out entirely.

We will see a band of lake effect that will develop over the lake,
and swing in later this evening and overnight. This will occur as
winds back from the NE, eventually to the WSW late tonight and
Tuesday morning. Additional accumulations will be expected with
great instability over the lake, and good moisture/inversion heights
once the flow backs sufficiently. One thing that will limit accums
from being too high will be the shifting wind flow through tonight.
Winds will pick up some, which will likely cause some additional
blowing and drifting snow. The blowing and drifting, and additional
snow is why we have extended the warning for the western half of the
area.

Lake effect will continue for the western half of the area on
Tuesday (and beyond). The flow is expected to generally remain
almost due westerly for much of the area. This favors the worst
conditions for snow and blowing snow for the western half of the
area. The snow will not accumulate significantly with the DGZ
dropping below cloud level and flake size being very small. This
will reduce visibility tough, and allow for blowing and drifting to
occur much easier with gusty winds. We expect that a better
convergence band will end up taking shape from South Haven to
Charlotte as the cold air wraps around the southern end of Lake
Michigan, and collides with the relatively warmer westerly flow off
of the lake. This is why we have added Calhoun and Eaton counties to
the warning.

With regards to the brutal cold, no major changes expected from
previous thinking. The core of the cold air will start moving in
Tuesday afternoon and remain overhead into Thursday with the upper
low diving in from the arctic and rotating overhead for a bit. We
are expecting the warmest areas protected from the lake will see
temps around zero and wind chills around 25 below Tue night into
Thu. Areas south of the line from South Haven to Lansing are likely
to see temps dropping as low as 15 below or so, and wind chills
approaching 40 below. This is because of the cold air wrapping
around the lake, and not being modified by Lake Michigan.

We should see a relative lull in the weather then later Thu until
later Saturday into Sunday. Lake effect should diminish a bit as the
upper low moves out, and we see the northern branch of the jet core
lift out of the area. A short wave does try to approach the area
that could bring some light snow Thu night.

The unsettled weather for the weekend, and eventually early next
week comes as the upper jet will transition to a flow more from the
SW as a large amplitude trough dives in across the western U.S..
This looks to warm our temperatures above freezing, and could bring
rain to the area initially. Things become quite a bit uncertain for
early next week, based on the timing of a southern stream system
coming up, and interacting with a backdoor cold front. If the srn
stream system moves out quicker, it could force a band of potential
ice further north. If the cold air comes in quicker, the ice could
be further south into the heart of Southern Lower. Still plenty of
time to monitor that.

&&

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon)
Issued at 1256 PM EST Mon Jan 28 2019

We are expecting waves of snow showers over the next 24 hours at
most of the sites, with the more widespread snow ongoing will
transition to bands of lake effect this evening and beyond.

Winds diminishing are allowing blowing snow to not be as much of a
factor, but small flake size continues to reduce visibilities down
below 1sm. We expect to see the light snow and low vsbys to move
out over the next 1-3 hours from west to east. Another batch of
snow showers with the low will move back in after a brief break in
the now. IFR vsbys will be likely, but not quite as bad as this
morning. The second batch of snow showers will move out later
this evening.

We will then see a band of lake effect over Lake Michigan, shift
onshore later this evening and overnight. It will hit KMKG and
KAZO first, and then spread through the remaining terminals. It
will eventually move north of KBTL and KJXN late tonight/Tue
morning as the flow becomes wrly at the lakeshore, and swrly
inland. IFR will be likely in these snow showers, with some BLSN
possible as winds increase again.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...
Issued at 325 PM EST Mon Jan 28 2019

Cold and snowy conditions are continuing to produce lots of new ice
on any rivers that are still unfrozen. An ice jam over the weekend
on the Muskegon River at Bridgeton appears to have stabilized, and
water levels have been slowly falling over the last 24 hours. The
flood warning has been cancelled. Bitter cold for the rest of the
week means our rivers will continue freezing over. Ice jams remain a
possibility at any spots along the river that haven't frozen over
yet. Ice jams can cause rapid changes in water levels, so anyone
living or recreating near one of our rivers should pay extra
attention to conditions over the next week.

The weather looks to turn warmer by this weekend, so ice production
will diminish. At this point, the warmup looks too short-lived to
cause a huge amount of snowmelt to enter the rivers, but stay tuned
as the forecast comes into better focus throughout the week.
