This Beach Hazards Statement is in effect from Tuesday morning through late Tuesday night. * WINDS...Increasing to gale force of 35 to 40 mph out of the south Tuesday morning and continuing into Tuesday night. * WAVES...Building to 6 to 10 feet north of Holland on Tuesday and to 4 to 6 feet south of Holland. 4 to 7 foot waves are expected area wide Tuesday night. * High wave action... strong currents and dangerous swimming conditions expected. * Strong structural currents expected. * Strong longshore currents expected. * Rip currents expected. * Location...Beaches from St. Joseph to Manistee. * Beaches with particularly dangerous conditions include... South Beach in South Haven... Grand Haven State Park... Pere Marquette Park in Muskegon. * Overview/potential impacts...Strong southerly winds on Tuesday will build wave heights into the 5 to 10 foot range in most areas. Waves of this height will pose a hazard to swimmers in all areas. The most dangerous conditions will occur on the south side of south piers where chaotic wave conditions will exist as well as strong longshore currents. Waves will completely wash over piers especially from Holland to the north. Stay off piers as you can be easily swept off in conditions like this. * IMPACTS...Homeowners along the lakeshore will need to monitor conditions beginning Tuesday morning and continuing into the afternoon hours of Wednesday. Significant beach erosion is possible along the lakeshore, especially to the base of the dune or bluff. The worst conditions will occur on Tuesday afternoon from Holland to the north. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A Lakeshore Flood Watch means that conditions favorable for lakeshore flooding are expected to develop. Residents on or near the shore should take action to protect property...and listen for later statements or warnings. High Wave Action makes swimming difficult and can tire even a strong swimmer quickly. Structural currents form along piers where longshore currents and wave action flow into the structure. Structural Currents can sweep you out into deeper water along the pier structure. A longshore current is a lake current that moves parallel to shore. Longshore currents can be strong enough to Prevent swimmers from being able to keep their feet on the bottom... making it difficult to return to shore. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore...which occur most often at low spots or breaks in sandbars. Water forced into channels between pier heads may flood portions of port towns along the river channel edges. Waves may completely submerge pier decks at times. * Beaches with particularly dangerous conditions today include North Beach in South Haven, Holland State Park, Muskegon State Park, Mears State Park in Pentwater, Stearns Park in Ludington. * Overview/potential impacts...North winds of 10 to 20 mph will generate waves of 3 to 5 feet today. The most dangerous conditions will occur on the north side of north piers. Stay off piers as you can be easily swept off by high waves. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... High Wave Action makes swimming difficult and can tire even a strong swimmer quickly. A Lakeshore Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds will generate flooding of low areas along the lakeshore. Areas of fog are expected early this Labor Day morning, possibly
lasting into the mid morning hours. The clearing that is working
across the area is aiding fog development. The good thing is we have
some wind aloft that will likely keep things in check. We will see
visibilities dip to around a mile is spots, but its not out of the
realm of possibilities to see spots dip below a mile as well. Not
expecting significant impacts from the fog, but we will be
monitoring.
As hinted in the convection allowing models yesterday, we are
expecting isolated to scattered showers and a few storms inland this
afternoon and early evening. The NAMnest shows this as well as the
SPC HREF. We have 20-30 pct pops in the forecast east of U.S.
Highway 131. MUCAPE values rise to around 1,000 j/kg so plenty
enough instability for a few storms.
Main focus in the 7 day forecast continues to be the severe
thunderstorm threat Tuesday afternoon and evening. All hazards
remain in play including damaging winds, large hail and a few
tornadoes. MUCAPE values will likely rise to around 1,500 j/kg with
the potential to exceed 2,000. Strong wind fields are in place with
a 500mb jet nosing towards 70 knots and a 850mb LLJ nosing towards
50 knots. Both of these values are quite strong for us and result in
high deep layer shear. So, storms will be organized and will have
the potential to rotate. This is shown in the helicity swaths by the
high res models.
The concern where this event could have issues is with dying
convection moving in late tonight into Tuesday morning. This
activity will push into Central Lower Michigan and could but a
damper on instability. Our current thinking is the morning activity
moves in weakens with renewed activity developing along I-96 and
points south in the afternoon and evening. Best chances for severe
weather look to be along and south of Interstate 96 and especially
towards Interstate 94. Damaging winds may be the main threat as
models are trying to shift to a linear mode pretty quickly.
Beyond Tuesday, very limited weather concerns with mainly high
pressure in place.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Monday night)

Main concern in the 06z Mon to 06z Tues TAF period is the threat
of fog during the remainder of the night and into Monday morning.
A deck of stratocumulus blankets much of Southwest Lower Michigan
at 06z, but it is beginning to clear from the west. As the clouds
cleared at MKG, fog immediately formed. We are thinking this trend
will continue as the clearing line progresses to the east. The
clearing is making steady progress to the east in the last hour or
so. Bottom line...we are expecting aviation conditions to
deteriorate this morning to IFR and possibly lower. Ceilings below
1,000ft are likely with visibilities that will dip to around at
least 1 mile in most locations. The fog and stratus are expected
to lift fairly rapidly this morning between 12z and 15z. 10-15
knot winds in the 500ft to 2,000ft layer should keep things from
getting too out of hand and aid in the improvement expected after
daybreak.
VFR weather is then expected for the remainder of the TAF period
from roughly 16z today through 06z tonight. Winds will be westerly
today at 5-15 knots.

Strong southerly winds likely to gale force are expected on Tuesday.
Winds ramp up significantly around 800am on Tuesday with 35-45 knots
in the profile between 1,000-2,000ft. Bottom line we are expecting
south gales to 35 to 40 knots during the day on Tuesday. Waves will
likely build to 5 to 8 feet north of Holland resulting in lakeshore
flooding and beach erosion. A direct onshore flow is more
problematic in terms of erosion and flooding, but 8 footers will
clearly be eroding the base of the dune.
Winds shift to the west and northwest Tuesday night, more in the 25
to 35 knot range. The flow will be northwest late Tuesday night into
Wednesday. winds and waves will drop significantly Wednesday
afternoon and evening.
A 24 to 30 hour period of higher winds and waves are expected from
around daybreak on Tuesday through midday on Wednesday. A Gale Watch
will be issued as well as a Lakeshore Flood Watch. Beach Hazards
Statement for swimmers going out as well.
