Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Green Bay WI 1042 PM CST Mon Jan 21 2019 Updated aviation portion for 06Z TAF issuance .SHORT TERM...Tonight and Tuesday Issued at 356 PM CST Mon Jan 21 2019 Snowfall issues are the main concern during the short term. There are still some questions regarding timing, duration and totals with the system approaching from the western CONUS. Also, there were ongoing snow showers in eastern Wisconsin from a lake-effect band that moved onshore early this afternoon. Snow due to isentropic lift in warm advection ahead of the approaching system will bring accumulating snow to northern Wisconsin during the night. Models are a little more consistent in spreading snow across the rest of the area on Tuesday morning with the main low. There were differences among the models with the location of the highest QPF values. This led to no better than moderate confidence in the snowfall forecast, especially considering how close we are to its onset. Expect accumulating snow throughout the afternoon on Tuesday before the system passes east of the state Tuesday night. Storm totals will be stretched out over a long enough period of time for an advisory to cover the situation. .LONG TERM...Tuesday Night Through Monday Issued at 356 PM CST Mon Jan 21 2019 The heaviest snow from this event will be ongoing during the first part of the extended with abundant fgen forcing and moisture available. A new wrinkle has been introduced this run as some models are showing a fairly significant mesoscale band forming across north-central Wisconsin during the evening hours. This band would possibly push snowfall totals into the warning range as totals get near 8 inches. However given the placement of these bands this far out is difficult to pinpoint and not all models have this feature, will opt to keep the advisory instead of a warning until the placement of a mesoscale band can be confirmed and then determine its exact placement if it does form. Snow from this system will wind down later Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning as the main low tracks through lower Michigan. A brief period of dry weather will then settle in across the region Wednesday afternoon and evening before a clipper system bring another round of light snow showers late Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Most of the snow will this event will be across the north, with lake effect snow continuing across the north through Friday as winds turn northerly behind the departing low. What the low lacks in moisture it will pack a punch with respect to temperatures as it ushers in cold Arctic air in its wake. Low temperatures behind the low will fall into the middle to upper teens below zero across the north, with lows around 10 below zero across east-central Wisconsin. Daytime highs on Friday will struggle to get into positive territory, with many locations staying below zero even during the afternoon hours. Temperatures will moderate a bit late in the weekend and going into early next week, however temperatures will remain well below zero for this time of year. Several weak low pressure system will bring the chance for snow at times during the later part of the extended, with LES showers across the north. There is a chance for accumulating snow Sunday through next Monday as a low pressure system dives to the south. However timing, details and amounts will need to be refined in future forecasts. If the system does pan out it could bring several inches of snow to the entire area, particularly across central and east-central Wisconsin. && .AVIATION...for 06Z TAF Issuance Issued at 1042 PM CST Mon Jan 21 2019 Light snow and MVFR/IFR conditions will arrive across northcentral Wisconsin late tonight and across the remainder of the area early Tuesday. The snow will continue at varying intensities through Wednesday morning. It appears a widespread 4 to 7 inches of snowfall is expected, with locally higher amounts possible. The higher snow amounts are forecast to occur across the north tonight into Tuesday morning and across central and east-central Wisconsin Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the entire area for this system. Several clipper systems will bring the chance for additional snowfall chances Thursday into Friday and again on Sunday. However, snowfall accumulations should be rather light for much of the area. A very cold airmass will settle in across the western Great Lakes late in the week and into next weekend. Wind chills of 25 to 35 below will be possible Thursday night and Friday night with wind chills of 20 to 30 below Saturday night.
